Toronto's North by Northeast music and arts festival is a week-long, world-class event that just finished its 19th year and the word on the street is that it was better than ever. At the beginning of Blue Hawaii's set at The Comfort Zone, Raphaelle Standell-Preston addressed the fairly packed room: "I have a question. Do you guys wanna dance or no?" The crowd of course roared in approval because when does an artist ever ask that question and not expect an answer in the affirmative? Well, maybe Morrissey. I could see Morrissey doing that. BRAIDS has been reborn. This much is obvious in 2013, both superficially and on a deeper thematic level. Last month, we experienced a taste of the bands first new sounds since Native Speaker when they released Amends , the mesmerizing B-side on the 12 that also features todays drop.
