This year in music has been quite impressive. While 2010 gave us clear-cut, stand alone winners, it was much harder to determine which album was Top Ten worthy, let alone the best of 2011. Most sites have published their lists already, and while many albums appear on the same lists, the top ten varies greatly from list to list. Don't expect us to be any different. Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]
I'm so frequently at a loss for words when it comes to Braids . I know I'm not the only critic to feel this way; most other outlets have struggled to capture Native Speaker within the confines of written and spoken language, but that's exactly why this record is so special. It may seem like a cop-out to say "you've just got to hear it for yourself," but there's no better way for me to put it. Native Speaker isn't a straightforward album, and it's definitely not for everyone. It's a record that demands patience [...]

It's that time of year again: Reindeers and lights everywhere, and long lists of presents… especially from my children. For my part, I just want 2012 to be as much of a "party year" as 2011 has been - or better even! I have a tough job (I may have ...
If it's December, then you know it's Mixmas time at You Ain't No Picasso! Each year I get a bunch of my favorite bands to contribute themed mixes and share their thoughts about each of the tracks. MP3: Said the Whale - Camillo (The Magician) I heard "Camillo (the Magician)" playing over the speakers in [...]

So...I suppose I'm a tad bit late to the year-end-best-of-lists party but oh well. Josh already offered up his favorite tracks in the year-end best-of playlist and, while our lists have a lot of crossover, I thought I'd offer up my favorite 50 tracks from the past year. I've struggled with the idea of trying to put a 'best-of' stamp on anything I listen to based solely on the fact that I'm not all that comfortable with the idea of ranking all the tracks I love. This is more a representation of all my favorite tracks from [...]
![Best of 2011: Remixes [Top 11]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3935162_lg.jpg)
Looks like 2011 is almost coming to an end. Looks like various sites have been doing their Best of 2011 list. I still haven't finished compiling my list of singles and albums that came out in 2011. But for now, here is my Top 11 list of the best remixes. This is the first time I've done this. Hope you like it. Adele - Rolling In the Deep (Jamie xx Shuffle) [...]

SGTMT
Tweet Here at SGTMT headquarters we decided that our albums of 2011 list should be a collaborative effort. We're a team y'know. Sadly Luke has slumped out on the sofa in front of re-runs of Top of the Pops from the 90s, we've tried to stir him from his stupor but our efforts have been in vain. Nevertheless; Matt, Tim & Tom are stepping up the plate and we've agreed to each nominate 4 albums for our list of the 12 best albums of 2011. Me [...]

When Handsome Furs' Dan Boeckner sang "A thousand lonely kids making noise in the basement" on Sound Kapital , he was talking about all the angst-ridden musicians he encountered in his travels from Bucharest to Beijing, but he could just as easily been talking about my email inbox in 2011. Every day brought a new batch of fresh-from-the-studio records, singles and EPs by even fresher musicians looking for their place in the world. It's been a fascinating year for new music, for sure. When it came time to whittle down the list of my favourite discs [...]
Every casual browser of this here internet loves a list, particularly around this dishearteningly dark and ubiquitously dank time of year. Whether it be a page documenting childlike greed winking and nudging at material gain beneath the tawdrily-lit pine or the explicit illumination of what it was that made whichever year draws to an anticlimactic close shine and brighten the gloomiest bowels of forgotten memory, the pipes, wires and cabling of the web are currently clogged with Lisztomania. Not that referring to Ken Russell's full-length; nor to Rick Wakeman's stodgy soundtracking; nor to Phoenix' glowing estival peep but instead to [...]

British Sea Power once wasted elegiac stanzas on a rapport destined to be 'ended on an oily stage'. However, many wonderful musical happenings of a more positive nature have coincidentally occurred over the course of the past twelve months on stages small and large; sticky and pristine; smooth, sweaty, and indeed oily (for which see that of Tivoli de Helling above). Here's the deal: we'll run through our most enjoyable for reasons varied (and in some cases pretty well unknown), and you can reminisce or wish you'd been there in a more composed state of mind or rejoice in the [...]

This time last year I did a post where I basically talk (write) aloud to myself about the albums I put as my favourite of the year 12 months ago and what I think about that now, invariably you're late in discovering a few albums and you're tastes change over time. My list of albums from 2009 changed quite a lot when I redid it in 2010 ( check here ). Though, after saying all, that, I've decided my list of 25 albums for 2010 (which can be found here ) is actually still highly reflective of what I [...]

Touching down in Holland equipped with the ashamedly meagre grasp of Dutch of your typical drug tourist feels none too good. Having thumbed two phrases into the iPhone for safe keeping, neither would turn out to be in any way useful were any altercation to arise: they happened to be the gratuitous 'spreekt u Engels', and something about ordering a beer. Unable to pronounce either correctly, one coincidentally proves to be entirely incorrect and incomprehensible. A festival celebrating Canadian independent music produce in the unerringly picturesque, canal-infested Dutch haven that is Utrecht may seem somewhat [...]
