Blue Hawaii @ CMJ 2012 ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) Montreal resident Raphaelle Standell-Preston fronts both Braids and Blue Hawaii , but the bands are separate entities with their own musical personalities. Both groups like Mac Demarco, Burial, Majical Cloudz and Born Gold, though, which show up on each group's Top 10 of 2012 list which we have for you here in this post. Like the bands themselves, BRAIDS's list is a little more band-oriented and Blue Hawaii skews more electronic. (Guess [...]

Words, Photos, and Video by Ricky Everyone’s already told you … Austin, TX remains a kickass, music-obsessive city despite it being surrounded by a dirt-filled desert of conservatism. The massive SXSW and Austin City Limits Festivals flood the town with traveling music dorks each year, but a younger, cozier, and (dare I say) FUN festival crept into the scene seven years ago. The Fun Fun Fun Fest! The name says it all … organizers strive for a festival devoid of pricey, overcrowded Coachella or Lollapalooza vibes. Their gift for assembling lineups [...]

Ahhh. Home, sweet home. Back in the pit to bring you nine kinds of performance shots. Saturday's shots include Residual Kid , The Young , Gold Fields , Brendan Benson , Daughn Gibson , The Helio Sequence , Braid , The Spits , Surfer Blood , Tanlines , Paul Banks , Real Estate , Wavves and PiL . More from around the fest, of course. Fun was had by all, just bummed that I missed shooting Refused from the pit. It [...]
We've always had one hell of a time at Fun Fest every year, and we always have some fun after the festival discussing our take on each day's events. This year, we're letting each one of our writers provide their own take on the weekend with a personal recap of the goings ons so as to not compromise or impose on any one writer's opinions. I'll be starting things off today with some random thoughts and favorite bands from the best festival in town. Follow the jump for more from me. [...]
Brett and I met up a little before 9:30pm at KSVR , spent a few minutes catching up, then organized the selection of records we would play that night. It was a first for me - having a co-host - and it turned out to be a blast. Friday nights from 10pm to midnight can be lonely and I don't get many calls, so having someone else in the studio to talk to was definitely an enjoyable experience. For this evening, we chose a theme of the 90s, courtesy my [...]
Back in 2010, the Montreal duo that is Blue Hawaii , aka Alexander Cowan and Raphaelle Standell-Preston, released their debut Blooming Summer . I for one really enjoyed that record and I still listen to "Blue Gowns" on a regular basis. Since then though, they've been pretty quiet, likely due to Raphaelle's involvement with Braids . But that all changed when the lineups for this year's CMJ began to pour out. I was pleasantly surprised to see Blue Hawaii among the [...]
More than 1,000 bands are playing at CMJ 2012, which launches today in NYC. Here are The Owl Mag’s top ten don’t-wanna-miss shows to ensure you and your loved ones have a kicking CMJ ’12.
Blue Hawaii's Blooming Summer kept us warm throughout a bitter winter a couple years back , and the pairing comprising BRAIDS' Raphaelle Standell-Preston and Alex Cowan, the acquaintance that instantaneously became accomplice, here return with their most polished spheres of impeccably rounded sound to date. Thankfully, they've a full-length a little more full due out early next year by the name of Untogether , and to tide us over 'til then we've this two-parter into which we may dive, to which we may jive, and again chase away the frostbite. The first segment of [...]
There are some people who believe CMJ is like any other Friday night in NYC, but they're simply wrong. CMJ is night after night of amazing music and free parties - so many that choosing just one feels wrong. We here at The Wild Honey Pie love CMJ so much (as witnessed by our 3 parties) that we just couldn't help but compile a list of all our favorite events of the week. The best part, they're all free! We'll see you around this week, that is, if we can choose where we'll be. [...]
Empress of #7 (Orange) GITNB’s Acts To Catch at CMJ 2012: Empress of I’m kinda over the whole, we don’t want an online presence/love us for our music thing, but if that’s what helps you sleep at night, then fantastic. Fucking do it all day. Fucking love primary colors, especially on Youtube. The problem with the next iamamiwhoami is that everything now rests on their live show at CMJ next week. For Jonna Lee, she lived up to [...]

Braid, the beloved band from Champaign, Illinois performed their seminole album Frame and Canvas for fans at the Troubadour.
Shawn Brackbill When I first started playing guitar in high school, I spent an inordinate amount of time in music and pawn shops looking for pedals - they were (relatively) cheap, fun, and would obviously make me a far better player than, oh, practice. And one thing that these shops' stock had in common were chorus pedals. So many chorus pedals. Some shops were like a veritably baby blue sea of Boss chorus pedals. Because this was the early '90s, when grunge was king and everyone wanted distortions and no one wanted to sound like Andy Summers. [...]
