I'm taking a 24-hour break from photo sharing because it's Sunday and I might be lynched by my readers if I don't offer a mix tape for download. I think there's only one (maybe two?) more days worth of photos to share, then I'll get back in the swing of regular updates about how "indie" [...]
You all remember infrequent Swan Fungus contributor Sam, right? He goes by the improbable handle "S Bowlin" in the comments section. He's got two of his own websites, Black Candle Magick and Mask Making. He's authored a few Swan Fungus blog posts through the years, including "Cruising At Red Robin" and "13 Songs That Would [...]
7 mile run this morning went pretty well! My knees and ankles are holding up alright almost two hours later so I should be good for the rest of the day. Now I've got Sunday and Monday "off" before the schedule resumes on Tuesday. It was my friend Dan's birthday last week, so he's having [...]
The other day I began to describe the origins of the Sunday Mix Tape feature. Today, I'll describe the end of an era. The second fifty mix tapes, which commenced on January 28th, 2007, saw an increased amount of attention paid to marginalized artists. It was almost as if the first few dozen installments were my way of convincing people to come along for the ride, and the second fifty mix tapes were my way of introducing people to the really good shit. Three years ago, before the reissue and the recent Pitchfork review, you'd never see an [...]
Can't talk. Watching Dead Snow . It's a Norweigan horror-comedy about Nazi zombies. It's about the best thing I've seen in quite some time. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. No theme tonight, just me watching zombie [...]

ah the sweet oblivion of mistress monotony, lifting her swishing curtains of velveteen skirt and welcoming us into her mighty warm moistened folds. no balls indeed. this dear readers, this fellow travelers, this oh brothers and sisters of tinnitus can i get an amen, is remorseless, ruthless, brutal, unyielding, relentless. adjectivise mother fuckers, adjectivise. yup. first lp from brainbombs duo drajan bryngelsson and dan raberg following on from their (well drajans...) seven incher last year. but whereas brainbombs indulged in monged [...]
it's a fucking mess? it's a fucking mess?? too right it is. a glorious fucking mess at that. welcome to the misanthroparty! woo. and. hoo. a timely reissue of arguably the brainbombs finest moment. a gargantuanly grim reminder of just how squalid life and art can be. oh it's art baby. a fetid ugly little abortion [...]

One thing I neglected to mention in my previous Brainbombs post is that despite my grevious misgivings, I actually really do like them, though I'm not so sure I'd go so far as to say I "enjoy" them. The band's new album "Fucking mess" is exactly that: a shambling wreck of what most people construe to be "music". At the same time, it's also absolutely mesmerizing. I'm disgusted with myself for listening to something with so few redeemable qualities, yet that's exactly what makes it what it is. It's vile, violent, deranged and positively [...]
Look for a new LP from Swedish cult act Brainbombs called "Fucking mess" to be released on LP in November, their first album of new material in 10 years. More info at Lystring: http://www.lystring.com/ The band will also play their first show in ages at the Sonic Protest Festival in Paris on December 12: http://www.sonicprotest.com/
This one's a new release, but it's an old recording so it qualifies for Friday posting. Brainbombs are a cult band who've been lurking on the periphery for a long while now that's only recently started to get their due as more and more bands namedrop them as influences. All those shit-gaze bands du jour? Oh yeah, totally like Brainbombs . Seems like anytime you hear repetitive sludge buried beneath an intentionally bad recording, you'll see the reference. Personally, I'm a bit on the fence about them and can't reasonably offer a recommendation for most casual listeners. [...]
Swedish cult misanthrope act Brainbombs are back in the studio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =9nVchK_Vp4o
"Don't let the jaunty little Lawrence Welk ditty that opens Obey lull you into any sort of peaceful state, you'd best be prepared for the hateful murderous mayhem that Obey has in store for you. Then again, that's probably precisely what the Brainbombs had in mind. A gentle voice luring you into a dark alley, a shiny trinket distracting you while the burlap sack goes over your head and you're dragged kicking and screaming into the woods, a sweet piece of candy draws you just close enough so you can be knocked unconscious, tied up, and [...]

Boy did I get drunk last night. Bear Republic Big Bear Black Stout, you are no longer my friend, no matter how deliciously alcoholic you might be. There was a period of time when I found myself "falling asleep" (blacking out?) on a pillow-covered floor for one or two minutes at a time. I don't remember stretches of conversation that occurred between myself and the person with whom I was hanging out, but I can always pretend my cognitions were fascinating and insightful. Now here's the music! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, [...]

Someone should have the bright idea to create a public smackdown concert between The Makers and Brainbombs , because I'd be as moist as a baby's nappy over the aural and visual delights therein. The Makers would be all like, "Look at us, we're singing Do What I Wanna and Angry Young Man and we're snarling and wearing our sunglasses onstage and flipping the audience the bird even though they paid to see us!" This bratty tirade would be cut short, [...]
