It sounds like Johnny Foreigner have finally pulled themselves out of the dustbin they were recording in, if the new recordings on their Myspace are anything to go by. The band have gone back and put together some new versions of old favourites 'Sometimes, In The Bullring' and 'Sofacore', and they sound fantastic. This isn't an entire sea change though, as there is still very much a DIY feel to these recordings, but in a way where you can actually hear the words now. MP3 [...]
brakesbrakesbrakes are the rollin', bowlin', tumblin', toilin', boilin', wheelin', bleedin', blood givin' buddies that have been throwing eyes into the valleys of the blind and sending mp3s to the moon or further for over three years now... In 2006 they backed Belle & Sebastian and Editors in the UK & Europe, smashed Texas for a [...]

Photography by Marc Baptiste Brakes - Sometimes Always I gave you all I had I gave you good and bad I gave it you just threw it back We won't get on our knees Don't make us do that please We've been away and now we're back Don't be too sure of that What makes you sure of that? You've been away: you can't come back We walked away from you [...]
Two albums down and Brakes remain a musical spectre scaring wandering ears with their flighty punk infested melodies. 'Give Blood' was a huge surprise, full of funny asides and microscopic songs that barely existed long enough to register. Album number two has seen Eamon Hamilton leave his British Sea Power counterparts behind permanently to concentrate on the good ship Brakes. As ever there are

Six, or seven, weeks to go until the music starts at SXSW (March 14th), I won't be there, but I guarantee you that the buzz that'll build in the indie music community will be like a pot of strong coffee to me. Last year SXSW had a massive amount of music and the same will be true this year. You may already know that the festival for the past couple of years has hosted hundreds and hundreds of mp3s of bands that were showcaseds at Austin, although this year's showcase mp3s aren't online yet, last years are still [...]

By most accounts, the second album by Brakes , Beatific Visions, is a more controlled, more thought out, and a more cohesive album than their debut disc, Give Blood. The songs are a little longer, a little slower, and there seemed to be a concentrated effort by the band to produce a proper album that ebbs, flows, and peaks then retreats. The beauty of Give Blood, was that it had the feeling of a group of friends laying down tracks in a garage for the sake of making music and nothing else. It was spontaneous. [...]

Did you know that this is post 199 on this blog? No? Well it is you know. Not that that is particularly exciting given my slowdown over recent weeks. It also means that there won't be anything special for post 200. Not because I can't be bothered (well, a little of that), but mostly because there's a lot of fun list type posts coming in December. All of which will be very exciting and have lots of fantastic music contained within them. Hell, there might even be an advent type thing through the [...]
Brakes "On Your Side" - The Brighton-based punk band Brakes dress up more than half of their new record in country and western drag, but aside from a few tracks that jump into the deep end of predictability, they mostly play with the genre's signifiers whilst keeping their identity intact with a briskness of tempo and a taste for sharp dynamics that distance them from the alt-country crowd. At its core, "On Your Side" is a simple pop song that could easily be nudged into several styles, but faux-country is the outfit that suits it best, [...]

Meet Evan Jones. He's 13, and is the son of my friends Andrew and Sarah. He came along to Summer Sundae with the rest of us and it was his first festival experience. He was great to have around, particularly because he's such a big music fan! After going on about the festival at great length myself over the past few days, I thought I'd give Evan the chance to share his festival highlights with the blogosphere, so here goes... [...]
