6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you. I love you, dude. Words are hard this morning. Yesterday was a recovery day, my insides but not quite up to par after a day spent imbibing homemade beer [...]
Please allow director Molly Carney to set the scene: "In the year 2745, two of the last remaining humans on Earth discover an alluring pile of worm castings deposited by the mystical Worm Wizard." While that might be enough to get you to press play on the video below (it certainly was for us), it may help if we offer a bit more in the way of a description. "MAMMALIA: Post-Collapse of the Human Empire" is a short art film that mixes campy new-ageism with the childlike wonder aroused by ingesting some particularly potent psilocybin mushrooms. The hunters' psychedelic journey [...]
![BRANCHES' THOU ART THE DREAM [7.3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4083762_lg.jpg)
Helicopter - Branches // Buy Branches (@branchesmusic) are the kind of band who charm you right from the start - it's pretty hard not to love their cheerfully catchy melodies and subtle yet inspiring vocals. Having familiarized myself with their EPs, Cabin and O' Light , I was definitely expecting more pop-driven elements on their full release. What Thou Art The Dream provides, though, is a matured sound, featuring heavier folk accents that still pay homage to the band's poppy roots. Thou [...]

In my book there is no other band that compares to Frontier Ruckus; with that said Branches comes pretty close to a West Coast version of the band. First off the music is folk based (although on this record they have added ukulele, trombone, trumpet, violin, toy organ), the lyrics are flowery/poetic, and the band exudes a sense of community. But unlike Frontier Ruckus who seem to be writing about the barren and collapsing midwest, Branches writes about the open spaces and natural surroundings of Northern California. There's no better example of this than the [...]

![[Listen/Download] Branches- Snow In Summer](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4035069_lg.jpg)
by teepoo Haha, right now it's more like summer in the snow with the crazier we've been having. Here's a track from Vancouver electronic artist Jonny Dylan Hughes. It's pretty chill and perhaps since we lack slow lately maybe you can close your eyes and imagine it to this track. This is actually from an old album, but they've released a newer album named Wisdom this January which you can check out on Bandcamp . Branches- Snow In Summer
Little did we know that as we were posting about Branches' release on UUU Tapes last week , the Portuguese drone impresario was releasing another tape, Ninguém É Como Tu , on Solid Melts that same day. The video for "Canção para o Luís" is another self-produced foray into found footage recutting, though with an explicitly more nostalgic feel that complements the intertwining melodies of the track to create a half remembered but uncannily familiar fugue of ads, video games , soft edged geometric shapes, and oversexed gym bunnies. We all had different childhoods, ok? [...]

Branches "Canção para o Luís" from SOLID MELTS on Vimeo . Total trans-national melter from Branches , the alias of Portuguese musician Pedro Rios. This video, from his new tape Ninguém É Como Tu on Solid Melts , evokes a blissfully disassociated American culture with its pizza bodybuilder imagery.
The latest tape from Portugal's Branches, titled Primeira Vez , is built out of robust, sprawling droners that are meditative and varied enough to make your dusty collection of buddha boxes from a few years ago terribly jealous. The gathering hum and glittering oscillations of the enthusiastically titled "Oooooompha!" has a compact, noisy feel that stands out from its accompanying tacks, serving as an effective counterpoint for their varying arrays of breathy, spacious, and/or more organic sounds. The self-produced video splices in proto-psychedelic animations by Len Lye and James Whitney with texture shots of [...]

Two new cassettes by Portugal's Pedro Rios aka Branches on two of my favorite tape imprints, good times! The first one is Primeira Vez , a surprisingly rather dark, gloomy and contemplative effort that's gonna be dropped next week via Triple You Tapes . Listen to "Pré-Natal" below, a slowly meandering meditation that feels like a lost track of mid-noughties free-folk improv. Branches - Pré-Natal The second Branches tape is named Ninguém É Como Tu [...]

The holiday season is upon us (also basketball season, finally). But mostly, it's the season of ugly sweaters, drunk uncles, and, if you're a teenager, enough gift cards to paper your walls because nobody knows what to get you. We here at The Wild Honey Pie are better at Christmas shopping than your great Aunt Mildred, though. We put together a holiday playlist full of classics and indie favorites that will keep your earbuds warm when the weather outside starts to get frightful. There's no better soundtrack to accompany the decking of halls, the nogging of eggs, [...]

[There's plenty of great Christmas songs out there, but most suffer terribly from over-exposure. To remedy that, EbM presents a selection of alternative Christmas songs .] Christmas is a time when my rational, atheist mind turns to mush when confronted with all the trappings of the season. Thick dripping candles, vaulted ceilings, and the sheer power of carols that have been hardwired into my brain from an early age all come together to leave me very confused indeed. It's in that spirit that I find the [...]

<iframe width="560" height="315" src=" http://www.youtube.com/embed/D tMvlOwCOxw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> You know that nice bit in a shoegaze/noise song the bit just before it all goes predictable, banging and whirring and clanging? The nice whooshy bit, the white noise bit, the adjusting of the set - it's nice innit? This song by Branches which is soon to be released on Triple You Tapes does that, it leaves you in that wonderful purgatory of hellish life affirming noise and sonic bliss. It's a nice place to be, the abrupt end is like the end [...]
