Los Angeles folk quintet Branches waxes lovey musings and dreams of utopia.

We made it. I made it. Winter could not take us. I want to both berate nature for having inflicted all those cold, hellish months on me and thank it profusely for having whisked them away with chirping birds and blooming iris' and sunshine. This is the conundrum of the Midwest clime and it is one that baffles me every damn year, despite 30 of them here. Here, when it turns cold, you grit your goddamn teeth and steal yourself against the wind and you pray it's one of those [...]

Blubell is a brazilian singer and composer who grew up in São Paulo and since 2006 has a solo career. Before that, she was part of a few bands, made special features in shows of the Brazilian big band Funk Como Le Gusta, and borrowed her voice to jingles for TV commercials. Her first album - Slow Motion Ballet - released independently in 2006, brought only songs written by the composer, except for a version of “Junk”, by Paul McCartney. Slow Motion Ballet was well received by the critics in newspapers such as Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo [...]
"Startups are run by people who do what's necessary at the time it's needed. A lot of time that's unglamorous work. A lot of times that's not heroic work. Is that heroic? Is that standing on a stage in a black turtleneck, in front of 20,000 people talking about the future of phones? No. But that's how companies are built. That person who did that for the iPhone launch at Apple, we don't know who he is. All we know is that Steve Jobs came up with the iPhone. But he didn't ship it. The person who bought the donuts [...]

Sea, Sky, Land Music has always been about taking you to places. That’s where it takes me: to the sea (one of my muses), to the sky, to other lands. Your place in the world is tiny: get out of it, be respectful, be at peace. Through music, we can breathe, dream and live forever. It's holiday music time, and I am pretty worn out on the holiday standards by this point in the season. So, how about we give you a little gift of new, free holiday music from the folks over at Noise Trade. What's the rub you ask? If you want to download these records to your hard drive, it'll cost you an email address and a discretionary tip for the artists. It doesn't mean you can't just stream them though by just clicking on any of the images below. Enjoy the new holiday tunes, and we here at No Country hope [...]

It's been a hectic season, broken up by shock and awe and rumors of an apocalypse that never came. But the last day of school has finally passed, and now, suddenly, it's Christmas in earnest: time for the tree, and the warmth of family and friends; for church carols and pageantry; for hot cocoa by the fire, the kitten in our lap and the old dog at our feet, and the laughter of children. And we are grateful, and glad, in our bittersweet joy. Previously this year, we came to you with [...]

Last year UNESCO declared the traditional carol 'Silent Night' an 'intangible cultural heritage'. Coming as it did a year after L.A. band Branches decided to cover the classic one could easily put two and two together. In truth that's probably overstepping credibility but there have not been many finer versions of the Austrian composition than this. Their gift is their ability to hardly alter the slowly moving parts but 'Silent Night' still feels infused with a new lease of life. Natalie Nicoles is suitably angelic and the music makes its presence felt while assuming its rightful role as background scenery. [...]

It finally snowed full-force in Colorado this weekend, enough to divert me off the highway in a flurry of white, and to a roadside La Quinta on Saturday night coming home from the Patty Griffin concert. The temps hovered consistently at a lush 19º Sunday, and is currently at 7º. All is calm and bright because no one wants to move outside their electric blankets, so it's been a good weekend for me to road-test these songs. I am very pleased to report that this is my favorite December mix I've yet made. When it [...]
Last night it started raining and it has yet to stop. I find rain a bit dismal this time of year as I always think of Christmas as snow time. Maybe it's the carols that have me hoping for an inch or two or Santa's sleigh or how pretty the snow looks. I remember looking out the window and seeing snow falling and yelling in excitement for everyone to come and see. Today I'm bringing you the story of my Christmas tree. I bought it yesterday, and it is beautiful, shorter than usual but just as full. I [...]

Well another year has passed and I figured this would be the year I wouldn't post my Christmas mix but a few folks I like and others I hadn't heard of have released some Christmas music so here we are again. As I say every year: these may be holiday songs but many of them are solid songs period - many deal with themes if lost hope, loneliness and the rigors of the holiday season. In fact several of these songs remain some of my favorites - you be the judge - check them out and see which [...]

![[Folk] Branches – Thou Art The Dream](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4601840_lg.jpg)
Formed back in 2010, California band Branches are developing into quite the folk rock group, slowly carving out their own corner amidst like-minded artists Mumford & Sons and Freelance Whales . Their latest album, Thou Art The Dream , released earlier this year, is full of riddling banjo, affecting vocals, and vivid imagery. The songs wince, but still have whimsy, are poignant without ever being melodramatic. There's a certain authenticity about their music that makes it irresistibly appealing. Check out two tracks from the album below. Stream & purchase the entire thing via their [...]

'Paperchain' is the first single from, Welsh singer/songwriter, Joe Robert Lewis' forthcoming sophomore EP. Set to be released in 2013, the new EP follows on from 20112s 'Branches' and is expected to follow on where that EP left off, with yet more honest, pop-infused folk tunes. Joe's, yet to be titled, new EP is expected to be released in Spring 2013. For now, you can check out the video for 'Paperchain' below.

Cincinnati-based rock group The Dukes are Dead announced this week that the band is calling it quits. The band posted a message on their Facebook page on Monday, saying "We have found that the best way to continue contributing to the music scene is by branching out and pursuing our own projects of a more specific nature to each of us individually as musicians." The blues rock quartet played their first show on Halloween of 2010; nearly three years later, the band will play their last free show in town tonight at Mayday in Northside. Their final performance will be [...]
