All right, this has been a hectic week for me, I haven't had much time for the hill, so I wanted to brighten up your Friday with something enjoyable. A couple weeks ago I did a version of our regular Old School Monday section dedicated to Delicious Vinyl . After that post, someone who works with DV sent me a link to Fatlip's Top Ten Delicious Videos of all time. The video is hosted by Fatlip, which makes sense, and a lady friend of his who I don't know. They're [...]

The Brand New Heavies feat. N'Dea Davenport by Patrick Griffiths Our kind friend Paul Moshay informed us that the Heavies' last album got some remix treat. What's especially attractive is they've released it all for free on Last.fm. If you're looking for your daily soulful urban beat fix you should check out these "Let's do it again" remixes . Remixed by the ultimate remixer, the 67 year old Tom Moulton who's the accidental discoverer of the "remixing" concept itself and the breakdown section, and the 12-inch single vinyl [...]
The Bounce is back from a rainy vacation in central Wisconsin. And after spending all that time with Biggie, I've got remixes on the dome. Just like Diddy! Eric B and Rakim Paid In Full (7 Minutes of Madness - Coldcut Remix) 12", 1987 Back when we all used to wear our driving gloves to the teen club (oh, like you didn't), "7 Minutes of Madness" was the craziest remix out there. There are penguins. Really cute CGI penguins. Thousands of them. Tapping their feet on ice. No wonder why they beat Bond off the number one spot, for two weeks in a row. I myself don't even know what the plot really is about, and I'll probably end up seeing it (because I have to go to look after my little sister, of course!). I wouldn't mind, though, since these penguins have quite a good taste in music and pick such catchy songs to dance to. The Brand New Heavies (feat. Jamalski) - Jump N' [...]
Yesterday I took my young cousins to see Happy Feet . And in all honesty, I think I enjoyed the movie more than they did. Maybe it's because penguins are funny. Or it could be the fact that thousands of them are dancing to catchy music that makes me want to move my feet. Like these songs below: Stevie Wonder - I Wish Brand New Heavies - Jump 'N Move

The Brand New Heavies was originally the creation of three schoolmates from the London suburb of Ealing, with a particular admiration for 70s funk and soul. Initially instrumental, the trio grew with a cult following in their native London using their smooth style of acid jazz and soul with an occasional hip-hop influence. Many of their albums employ flexible R&B singer N'Dea Davenport, whose last album with the group came in 1994. Since then, The Brand New Heavies have used a revolving door of vocalists, such as Siedah Garrett and Carleen Anderson. Davenport has reunited with the band [...]
First things first. Acid jazz is a bogus label. It's a joke. The story goes that British DJ Gilles Peterson , sometime around 1987, was shown an acid house record by another DJ. Peterson then proclaimed that what he played (a mix of Seventies jazz, funk and Latin) was "acid jazz." So, it's not really "acid," and as we'll see over the course of the week, it's not really jazz. It is a mix of R&B, funk and soul, with touches of jazz, and later hip-hop. [...]
On the occasion of the new Brand New Heavies album Get Used To It , I'll be presenting a look at the acid jazz genre. The core of the British band is Jan Kincaid (drums/keyboards), Simon Bartholomew (guitar) and Andrew Love Levy (bass/keyboards). Beginning in the mid-Eighties, they played a brand of instrumental funk in the style of the Meters. They eventually added a horn section and a vocalist, Jay Ella Ruth. When she left, they added Atlanta native N'Dea Davenport ; it is this version of the band that [...]
Popular early 90s funk revivalists The Brand New Heavies new album Get Used To It jumps straight into a sound that precedes the group wherever it goes; acid jazz, lounge funk or even soulful grooves, if you will. Or at least history would lead you to believe this to be the case, as it [...]

"Michael Ross is the genie, he's giving our wishes..." At long last, The Brand New Heavies have reunited with N'Dea "The Voice" Davenport and their formal label Delicious Vinyl. The Brand New Heavies have stuck with their funky soul power sound and while they haven't been in the spotlight as much lately you can hear their influence throughout the R&B world. They've supplied the soundtrack to so many fond moments in my life I don't know where to start. Perhaps I'll just dedicate their new single, "Right On" to Matt and Julie's forthcoming twins . Matt, go on and [...]

A note I should be dropping earlier but couldn't because of slacking is that The Brand New Heavies are back with a new album. They're one of the archetypes of the soulful urban acid jazz funk combination. This new album sees them reuniting with vocalist N'dea Davenport, and it seems that's gonna rock. Here's what the Hollywood Reporter says about them : During the Heavies' absence, another three-word named act - the Black Eyed Peas - has risen to fame and snared the hearts of middle schoolers with its slightly naughty "Humps"-filled hip-hop.
