Brand New's sound is anything but brand new. The new album Daisy is definitely not pushing boundaries, and not really a good example of the already crowded genre of alternative rock. The lyrics and tones of the album are very dark. There's a lot of aggressive singing and hardcore screaming on most songs, with [...]
Brand New first three albums sound undeniably different from one other—from their 2001's pop-punk extraordinaire Your + Favorite + Weapon to 2003's fantastically emo Deja Entendu and the mature post-punk/progressive The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me of 2006—Brand New have never been shy at trying new sound out. Writing as a Brand New fan for over 8 years (I still clearly remember seeing them live for the first time with only about 20 people in the audience), I was without a doubt, shocked when I first heard Deja Entendu and [...]

[This weekend's concert calendar is more crowded than the 405 on a Friday afternoon. Superstars, stars, shoulda-been-stars, rising stars, fading stars — this weekend has it all. And it's topped off by Sunday's performance at the Greek by modern-day supergroup Monsters of Folks ... see below for the word on the street about that. Here's the lineup, and a couple under-the-radar picks:] Tonight: Danish quintet Spleen United [previously posted download ] are massive on the other side of the pond — above is a [...]

It's difficult to describe the feeling of seeing your favorite band live for the first time. A lot of words come to mind – incredible, intense and spectacular (just to name a few). All of those words describe the Brand New and Manchester Orchestra concert last week at the Uptown Theatre. The beautiful, unique venue hosted a three-hour onslaught of pure rock music. Waiting through the line that wrapped around the outside of the building, you could feel the anticipation of the excitement about to come. [...]

how darkly the dark hand met his end ♫ Brand New - Sink I have been sitting on Brand New's latest, Daisy , for 5 weeks now and that fact that it has taken me this long to post is not a good sign. I mean it's not a terrible sign, I am still posting, but this album is not for everyone. Or I don't know, maybe it is for everyone. It's a bit angry but what do I know, I am like doctor trying treat a relative, I'm just [...]

Saturday night, one of alternative's most promising bands, Manchester Orchestra (see our review of Mean Everything To Nothing , ) played to a sold-out audience at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom. After Sybris warmed up the crowd, Andy Hull & gang took to the stage for a blazing set focused primarily on the new album with a track or two from I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child . Unfortunately, they didn't have much time to dig into the back catalog since their set was only 35 minutes. And while the show was nothing like their [...]

Brand New's The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me was released back in 2006 but was never pressed to vinyl, titled "Untitled #443, because the band had failed to to secure the rights of Nicholas Prior's photograph which is currently the cover to the CD version. Whether or not they have secured the rights, or have decided to go with another cover isn't exactly clear at the moment, but Interpunk.com has put the vinyl album up for sale on their site. Apparently the album will be pressed by Triple Crown Records [...]
Evolution is a natural and healthy thing for a band. It keeps them interesting and relevant, especially if they manage to grow with their fan base. Brand New has been pulling out all the stops since they first hit the Long Island emo-scene earlier in the decade. Since then, they have managed to grow up quite nicely, expanding their sound on each album, with 2006's The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me being a pinnacle of sorts. With their latest, Daisy , the band has taken another step in their evolution, wrapping up all [...]

After critically acclaimed album "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me", many critics couldn't imagine emo kings Brand New stepping any further out of their type-casted persona. If there was any doubt before, there certainly is none now: Brand New is a tour-de-force. Don't get it twisted - they are as emotional as ever. After all, what artist isn't? This time, however, that emo, self-hating stereotype has manifested itself in deeper, rooted sentiments. The opening track 'Vices' is a perfect example. [...]

Waiting in line for anything is never any fun, but waiting in line to see a Brand New play live is different. Yesterday Brand New came to the HMV in downtown Toronto to promote their newest album release "Daisy", play an acoustic set and sign autographs. The line up began at 9 outside of the store and wrapped around the block. Conversations revolved around people's thoughts on "Daisy" compared to previous albums as well as the important question "what Brand New lyrics would you get tattooed on you?". HMV had the [...]

With the release of Daisy this week, it's time to gauge the transformation of Brand New. This was hard. Very hard. The changes from this band have been monumental, to say the least, but there were hints all along. These songs portray those changes and perhaps prophesy what's next. And keep in mind, these are NOT necessarily my favorite Brand New songs, just ones that I think show what the band has done the best. 5) "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad" from Your [...]

With 2006's The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me , Brand New set a new standard for alternative rock bands, showing that introspective lyrics and pained wailing could be accompanied by more than three-chord nonsense. It was, in every sense of the word, a triumph. It's with that in mind that I listen to Daisy , the New York outfit's fourth album and feel slightly betrayed. Where previous Brand New albums were meticulously arranged and performed, Daisy 's madness appears to have no method to it, and comes out sounding like an unfocused, broken mishmash of [...]
Video: Brand New "At The Bottom"

Welcoming a new album from an established band is like meeting your sister's new boyfriend for the first time. You know she's serious about this one and you want to support her, but you just don't know how he's going to fit, only that he has too. Sure the family will remain the same, but it will be different. Sure, your sister is still the same, and you can see why she likes this guy, but still how does he fit? Will he fit? He must fit. It's the same with Brand New. Daisy [...]
