It's time for some mid-week notes... *** This qualifies as old news by this point as the official release went out on Monday... but it's still news that I'm excited about. Josh Ritter has completed work on his new album, So Runs the World Away. The release date here in the U.S. is May 4th (my birthday is May 3rd if any readers want to pitch in and get me a copy). This is Josh's first full release since 2007's The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter , and [...]

Two videos today... with a related theme. First is Brandi Carlile covering Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" from something called The Interface . Brandi will play the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville February 10. Next is one from the late singer/songwriter/producer Stephen Bruton. Stephen has received a lot of attention lately for his work on the Crazy Heart Soundtrack, and I've dedicated a couple of sets to him at WDVX lately. His good friend Alejandro Escovedo dedicated a song to him during a [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Video , Exclusive Brandi Carlile has come a long way since her days providing backup vocals for an Elvis impersonator. After years spent cutting her teeth on the road, the alt-country singer-songwriter can now boast an impressive touring resume and has had the opportunity to play with some of her lifelong heroes, including a recent studio session with Elton John . "The heaviest moment was, I asked him to sing," Carlile told Spinner [...]

Preservation Hall, despite it's name, seems anything but preserved. The New Orleans building was built in 1750, opened its doors as a music venue in 1961, and has survived several fires as well as the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. With no running water or air conditioning, maybe it's about time the legendary venue got it's own benefit album. Preservation: An Album to Benefit Preservation Hall & the Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program comes out on Fat Tuesday, February 16. The album (available as a single disc, double disc, or double LP) features performances from Andrew Bird , [...]

I was tempted to limit this to a top 30 songs of the year, but in the past couple weeks I've discovered quite a few new tracks that have convinced me this year was a bit stronger than I had initially expected. I would still say that the list this year is weaker than past ones. Not because there wasn't enough good music this year. It's just that there were a lot fewer peaks. There were a TON (as many or more than ever before) good to very-good songs and albums out this year, but [...]

#12 - Give Up the Ghost by Brandi Carlile My wife and I always look forward to a new Brandi Carlile album, and we were right there at the record store on day one waiting for this one. Brandi is one of those artists that I've followed since her debut album. I feel like I've been along for the ride with her since the start and have watched (and listened to) her grow as an artist with each new release. She takes another leap forward here with Give Up the Ghost , an [...]
As the first year for Too Much Happiness comes to a close, I look back and think that it was a pretty good year for music. I wouldn't say it was anything EPIC. Certainly some influential albums here and there, but no real game changers. This is MY personal list of my top 20 favorite albums of 2009. Mine and mine alone. I'm sure Paul and Adam would take exception to many of these (Metric over Phoenix? Paramore over Miike Snow?! Animal Collective is HOW FAR DOWN?!?!), and I'm not even saying these are what I believe [...]
You can finally exhale: here are my top 20 albums of 2009. Apart from the two top spots, the order is rather random. Ask me in ten minutes’ time, and Grizzly Bear or M. Ward might sit at number 3 and 4. I’ve put sample tracks of each album on a mix; the song titles appear at the end each abstract. . 1. Richard Hawley - Truelove’s Gutter I didn't expect Hawley to top [...]

In case you missed it, do check out her cover of Mad World live from her Portland gig in November. Brandi Carlile - Late Morning Lullaby

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Pete Seeger , Steve Earle , Merle Haggard , Tom Waits , Andrew Bird , My Morning Jacket 's Jim James , Jason Isbell and Paolo Nutini are only a handful of the acts that sat in with New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band over the past year. For those unfamiliar with Preservation Hall, the venue holds a total capacity of about 50 people on six wooden antique benches. [...]

Indie label, Vanguard Records , got caught up in the Christmas spirit and decided give to us a free Holiday Sampler. It has tracks from some the best artists that they represent, from Brandi Carlile to Josh Ritter to Dar Williams to Greg Laswell...well you get the point and you can see all their names on the album cover to the left. Not all of the tracks are Holiday themed, but it is still a great mix for the holiday season. Here are few of my early favorites. Dar Williams - It's Alright [...]
