Happy St. Patty's Day! For those of you sober enough to read, keep drinking! If you want some music for your Irish self (if only for a day), plenty of good stuff going on. And will someone kindly pick me up a shamrock shake. 9:30 Club is hosting a night with the original Irish punks, The Pogues . If you missed Monday's show or just wanted to wait for the holiday, too bad. Sold out! There is a third show Wednesday and tickets are available. If you are left [...]

Tonight in Baltimore don't miss a good one at the Ottobar with Truth Serum, Microwave Background, Girls Of Gravitron, and Cortez Cortez. Down in DC the Black Cat has some sweet music with Brandon Butler and The Moderate. Finally don't forget about Y-Rock on XPN presenting Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion at the World Cafe Live in Philly. mp3: Brandon Butler - Sparks mp3: Animal Collective - Grass

The year is soon coming to an end, the college students are done the first semester and heading home and looking for something to do. Quite a few shows during the week for those looking for something to fill the time usually spent working or studying. Photo from artist myspace Playing back-to-back nights at the Birchmere, Aimee Mann is having a sort of homecoming (born in Midlothian, VA). Out on tour promoting @#%&*! Smilers , these shows Monday and Tuesday are sure to [...]

I wrote this after seeing the Federal Reserve, a collective of established, and like-minded alternative/folk musicians, perform on June 2nd at Iota in Arlington, VA. They played acoustic sets, and used basic folk instruments (including the chair for percussion). Not gonna lie, I was a little tipsy when I wrote this, and it's advisable that you just skip down to the bottom. You've been forewarned! Tonight, I saw the face of music. Music is when a group of friends decide to play together for no [...]

Many, many options this weekend in the area to catch your favorite music. Every night has something definitely worthwhile, all over the region. Friday Imperial China is having a CD release party and they want you there! They are with Double Dagger , Zulu Pearls , and the Black & White Jacksons . Catch them at the Rock and Roll Hotel in DC. One of my picks for Best of Philly '07 (and in serious contention for it this year [...]

It's St. Patrick's Day in DC and that can only mean one thing, it is time for Rose 's annual St. Paddy's Day Throwdown. She will be at Velvet Lounge tonight and she will be joined by John Bustine and Brandon Butler . Expect a raucous time, Irish drinking songs and lots of Jameson. Rose - Another Sad Song John Bustine - Jesus, Jesus Not Again Brandon Butler - Sparks

There are several quality shows in DC tonight. It's really good for a Tuesday and I guess that you have to thank CMJ travel for that. Summerbirds in the Cellar - credit In what should be a tremendous triple bill, The Octopus Project , Summerbirds in the Cellar and Shout Out Out Out Out are at Rock 'N Roll Hotel tonight. Also, A Decent Animal is playing Velvet Lounge . The Octopus Project [...]

MP3: Brandon Butler - Happy Sound (Dark and Pretty) Brandon Butler op MySpace Subscribe in a reader

I'd been dying to see Georgie James for ages and ages, so finally seeing them at Fort Reno was something of a relief. So was finally meeting up with Jason (who often contributes here) for a concert! Brandon Butler and Perfect Souvenir opened the night, I liked Brandon Butler but wasn't getting into Perfect Souvenir so much (though I like that they had a guy - not a girl, for once - playing the xylophone). During Brandon Butler's set it was pretty apparent that the guy really just wants to be Dylan, which I feel is a noble [...]
There are a lot of good shows tonight. This has been a pretty crazy day and I'm running behind, so I'm just going to list them... Baltimore's Two if by Sea is joined by DC locals The Alphabetical Order and Paul Michel at IOTA . You don't get a much better regional music showcase than this. Two if by Sea - Summer Borne For Sleep The Alphabetical Order - Submarines Paul Michel - The Ways and Means [...]

It is April in Chicago and it shouldn't still be this cold. Mother nature (however) can do as she pleases so I'll just have to lean on the new Brandon Butler album Lucky Thumbs for a little support. For those unfamiliar with Butler's musical pedigree, he fronted the excellent (but often overlooked) Kansas City emocore band Boys Life (see yesterday's emo post for an example) in the mid-90's and then more recently played the excellent band Canyon, which featured a more subdued alt-country sound. Either way, Butler's latest (and second solo album) is full of rootsy [...]

It's the kind of mood I'm in. First, fatigue set in, then my sinuses went on the fritz when the weather went from seventies to thirties in the span of 24 hours. What I'm saying, is that I'm a bit down today, and in the mood form some good, honest songwriting, and this new disc from Brandon Butler, Lucky Thumbs, does the trick. With 8 tracks of pained strummers and whiskey bottle rockers, it's either the cure for what ails me, or the sound to keep my down. "Sparks" is the lead number on Lucky [...]
