We are a kind of post-modern-ethno-Jugband says Hazmat Modine's frontman Wade Schuman in the long interview we've just published ( read it here ). A man of many passions, Wade composes his unique and rich sound like a golden age painter would choose different colours, textures, frames and materials. It's a variegated world full of strange or mundane animals, filled with tiny sounds from nature. Even if the core of what Hazmat Modine does is blues, the musical influences spectrum and tastes of the band, revealed in this exclusive mix, are almost infinite. You'll meet some longtime Hazmat friends and [...]

"Sometimes thing just seem to happen for a reason; you can't predict the way things will turn out but you instinctively know when something is right! When Karla Milton and Steve Trigg joined DC Fontana within a few weeks of each other in September 2007 neither could have guessed that 4 years, 3 hit albums, 2 grueling European tours and a clutch of groundbreaking videos later they would both feel the time was right to break free and embark on an exciting new venture as the core of the Karla Milton Collective. Anyone [...]
Well, it's here and it's out. We've been following the making of The Internet 's Purple Naked Ladies album, both through its music releases and the making of that music. The latter comes from the lens of Brass , a burgeoning filmmaker with a keen eye for young, eclectic talent. While Purple Naked Ladies had been digitally last December and physically released last week, the documentary came out this past week and gives fans a look at the mind map Matt Martian and Syd the Kid traveled together to conceive [...]

From electro-organic funktronica to jazz, soul & afro, Niko Schabel and friends a.k.a. Radio Citizen have already amazed us twice, in 2006 with Berlin Serengeti , and in 2010 with Hope and Despair (both on Ubiquity Records ). Niko has been playing a lot live and improvising, with Radio Citizen, the Niko Schabel Quartet, theExpress Brass Band and other bands from Germany. He cooked for Paris DJs this very nice brass band mix, with mostly live, unpublished recordings! Tracklisting : 01. Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra - Silence (from ' The Ballad of the [...]
brass 2: mouth by minibosses Wow, this is a bit of a blast from my past. About seven or eight years ago, I went through a stage in my musical trajectory where I was a little obsessed with video game soundtracks. Of course, this bled into becoming a fan of video game cover bands like the NESkimos and, of course, the Minibosses. It's been a while since I've had a reason to listen to this band, but it seems they've got a new album out titled Brass 2: Mouth , which is the [...]

As we mentioned back in August , we couldn't wait to dig into Beirut's fresh album titled The Rip Tide . Beirut has the full brass section, vocals from lead vocalist and founder of the band Zachary Francis Condon and an overall orchestrated sound unlike any other band out there today. This week's Song of the Week is inspired by Zach's hometown, Santa Fe. Need we say it again? This song will most definitely be in our top 100 songs for this year. Check out the rest of Beirut's The Rip [...]

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a Chicago-based collective of musicians almost exclusively focusing on brass instruments. Eight of the nine are brothers, sons of Phil Cohran, himself a legendary trumpet player in his tenure with Sun-Ra. They started as a street ensemble before making [...]
For me, Beirut's new album is a small step back from the Flying Club Cup and the March of the Zapotec EP that preceded it. I was sure all this waiting would result in something bigger and better, but the ambition needed for that doesn't surface on the Rip Tide. It just seems like business as usual. Maybe this would have been acceptable as a release between Gulag and Flying , but the arrangements and foreign flavors of Beirut have held much more water on previous releases, and enhanced the Beirut experience. [...]

Tweet Talk about serendipity. While frying up some eggs the other day, numb to everything except the sizzling in the cast-iron pan over a blue gas flame, Head of Femur's 'Where's the Fire' came on at random on my iTunes and put me in a wildly good mood. It had been a tough week at work in the salt mines, and this welcome boost of seratonin was just what I needed to make it to the weekend. Everything about this song works. The vintage organs, percussive piano [...]

BrassBastardz - This Night BrassBastardz - Sunrise It's been a hot minute since our last Artist Spotlight, we don't do them very often and the reason why is, that we do them when the music and artist/s hits that sweet spot, of originality and talent. And it's something so dope, that we really need to pull your attention to it. Enter BrassBastardz, real fresh and original act from Lithuania (yes that's right Lithuania) completely unexpected and a great find from Kitchen Dip records. BrassBastarz use Jazz as they foundation and lay on [...]

Chicago six piece Black Bear Combo is a poweful Balkan brass orchestra that I've discovered through their presence on FMA . They've been active since 2002, but mainly as a treme act that does weddings, funerals and parades in the East of States. If I'm not mistaken they were also on President Obama's Halloween party at the White House. Good fun and high spirits, like all Balkan troupes.

Benin 's legendary orchestra, the orchestra with many names as well as many rhythms, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo is back with a new album, called Cotonou Club, after 20 years. I was extremely excited when I got the tip to this project from our friends at Strut Records a few months ago, and believe me, it's worth the wait. 11 tracks of surefire afrobeat, killer brasswork and top notch songwriting. Essential! Produced in Paris entirely on vintage analogue studio equipment, this new album refreshes Poly-Rythmo classics such as 'Gbeti Madjro' (featuring [...]
