Passion means doing something that might be ordinary but that, to you, it’s matters like life and death. That’s what passion is, going for something no matter what it means to other people." Claire Boucher Whereas the Polaris Music Prize already has a seven year track record of honouring the top Canadian album, the Prism Prize is new on the scene - unaffiliated but sharing a similar mandate, but focused on the art of the music video rather than the album. And while some may have assumed the art form was on the decline due to the fact that their traditional medium - broadcast television - no longer plays them, the internet as well as the low cost of entry to powerful high-definition recording equipment [...]

Vancouver sextet Brasstronaut will play at Motel Mozaique Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (April 5-6). Their unique blend of trumpet driven jazz, pop and rock is tailor made for this gathering of leftfield music lovers. » brasstronaut.com HCTF review of Mean Sun .

Tweet There’s a unique magic about hearing great new music on the radio, isn’t there? Of course you can come to sites like this and find unknown gems (please keep doing that), but when you’re just going about your day with the radio on in the background and then something new and wonderful grabs your attention, it’s a special feeling. I can still remember where I was sitting when I first heard Bullet With Butterfly Wings by The Smashing Pumpkins; my homework was instantly [...]

Marc Pannozzo It's true that Crystal Castles had to push the release of their third album (III) back a week from this past Tuesday to next, but they only barely needed the extra time. The record went up as an advance stream earlier this week at MuchMusic , offering further evidence that the Toronto duo of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath have come a long way since the glitchy, more spectacle than songcraft hype of their 2008 self-titled debut . (III) is still built on bent beats, shrieked [...]

Last week we recommended Mean Sun to you; the sophomore record from Canadian indie-rock-jazz- somethings Brasstronaut . Released in their home-country back in May, the album finally got a European release last week. Today, we're very pleased to bring you the first look at the bands brand new video for the records stand-out moment and title-track. Check it out below. Mean Sun is out now and available from Itunes here , or on Spotify [...]

Continuing down the orchestral indie rock rabbit hole, Canadian 6 piece Brasstronaut have mastered an eclectic mix of rock, synth, brass, pop and hints of jazz into their sophomore album Mean Sun. Opening track Bounce builds like a slow beautiful sunrise; a magnificent crescendo over a serene mix of drums, celestial vocals and haunting trumpet that will most definitely give you a few goosebumps. The cinematic sounds seep through to the album's title track, Mean Sun, which has a nice lyrical grit to it that pleasantly plays against the soft nature of the song. [...]

Brasstronaut - Francisco Brasstronaut - Mean Sun We're gonna go ahead and give the boys of Brasstronaut a little bit more love and shout out the newish Mean Sun full length (since we kinda slept on its release for a while), right here and right now. The criminally overlooked (in our opinion) Mt. Chimaera long player from a few years back was a Liquid Jesus top fave for quite a while, with its gorgeous orchestral arrangements and down-tempo, somber subtleties hitting [...]
“Oké Joost, de categorie is sterrenkunde.” “Ah leuk.” “Ja, houd je daar van?” “Het is een van mijn favoriete kundes, als je het me zo op de man afvraagt, denk ik.” “Goed zo. Wil je een moeilijke of een makkelijke vraag? Er zijn nog 47 spelers over.” “Nou, als ik ze zo bekijk zijn het niet zulke snuggere luitjes, dus doe mij maar een moeilijke, Caroline.” The post Denk hardop, denk vooruit appeared first on Apply Some Pressure .

What's up to our BlackRadioIsBack.com and FuseBox Radio Broadcast family! It's been a while (due to a LOT of good things going on behind the scenes with FuseBox Media with some structural changes and projects) since we've written an article here on the site, but it's for a pretty great reason. During the week of June 11 - 17, 2012, we were able to touch base with our musical Canadian family in Toronto for the yearly North by Northeast Festivals & Conference (NXNE) . Now in their [...]

It was a bright, hot and sunny Saturday. Went down to Yonge & Dundas Square during NXNE. I wanted to see Vancouver's Brasstronaut play. Actually this was the first show of 2012 that I had seen them play. It's been awhile for them since recently they dropped their new album "Mean Sun". They put on a great set despite the hot sunny weather. Here are the rest of the photos.

It was a nice evening of indie orchestral/chamber pop rock music at Mavericks on June 20, 2012. With the heatwave we just had on Wednesday. Why not cool off with these bands that played. The acts that played were: • Brasstronaut • Útidúr • Phantom Shores Ottawa's Phantom Shores started off the set. [...]

Frank Yang June 16 had been circled on many calendars of Toronto music-goers for months, thanks to the intersection of Radiohead , The Flaming Lips' free headlining set at NXNE , and LuminaTO events. So, of course, I ended up doing none of the above and even only hit three NXNE-related shows... but at least they were good ones? And I got started early; Vancouver's Brasstronaut were on early at Yonge-Dundas Square, auspiciously following a 14-year old cover band. That was just a circumstance of scheduling, [...]
Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive Brasstronaut A lot of bands are faced with the prospect of following up a critically acclaimed album. Few turn their backs on the sound that brought them success in the first place; even fewer manage to do it well. Vancouver's Brasstronaut are one of those bands. "If we had an idea, we'd test it out and if it didn't work we'd throw [...]
