Sofia Stolpe NXNE -spotting happens on two levels: there's the micro, where you pore over the year's lineup and try to figure out how you'll spend the four hopefully-warm nights in June club-hopping and seeing bands new and familiar; and there's the macro, where you see how this year's festival as a whole experience measures up against past years and assess how the event is trending as Toronto's flagbearer in a world where cities are increasingly judged by the quality of their music festivals. Or at least, that's how I look at things. I [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive Brasstronaut A lot of bands are faced with the prospect of following up a critically acclaimed album. Few turn their backs on the sound that brought them success in the first place; even fewer manage to do it well. Vancouver's Brasstronaut are one of those bands. "If we had an idea, we'd test it out and if it didn't work we'd throw it away," Brasstronaut [...]

Opening up for Vancouver’s Brasstronaut was Útidúr (pronounced: ooh - detour), a ten-piece chamber-pop band from Iceland whose intensity should be bottled up and sold in stores. During their roughly 45 minute set the following happened. (Please take into account that all this occurred while under the influence of PBR): 1. The drummer asked the audience to wish his friend a Happy Birthday via webcam and tried to locate his missing hat during a break between songs. 2. The female lead vocalist brought out a neon blue keytar device and started playing it like a trumpet. [...]

Sabe aquela música gostosa pra se ouvir em plena manhã de outono antes de ir ao trabalho, enquanto se prepara para ter um dia longo pela frente? Apresento, portanto, "Bounce", do Brasstronaut .

Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Review:: Brasstronaut Mean Sun Technical proficiency usually comes with a hefty price tag attached. For every artist like Yngwie Johann Malmsteen or Jaco Pastorius that can drop jaws with digit dexterity forged into their work, there is a slew of skilled players that can't find the balance between engaging the listener and showing off technique. For Brasstonaut - a Vancouver based, jazz influenced outfit - melody was never sacrificed to showcase their impressive musical chops and [...]
Astronomers define the mean sun as an imaginary star, moving at the pace of our equator’s rotation. Perhaps it is the impossible setting of this sun Brasstronaut has pursued since the release of their critically acclaimed 2010 debut, Mt. Chimera. Cresting the momentum of that album – a SOCAN Echo Prize for Canadian song of [...]
True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

Out of the beautiful west coast of Canada comes Brasstronaut , a band bent on making music as gorgeous as their surroundings. The band are on the brink of releasing their second LP, Mean Sun , on May 15th. The intricate songs sprawl out in front of you as you listen. In some cases they seem to float in the zero-gravity of space ("Francisco"), others glisten and sparkle ("Bounce"). The band venture into Red House Painters haunting mope rock territory at times as well ("Moonwalker"). Continue reading »

Our good friends from Canada, Brasstronaut sent us over a track that strays greatly from their usual musical explorations. Anyone who has seen these guys will know their usual gigs entail a spine tingling, classical and emotional musical journey, not that I'm at all emotional you fruit. This track was more of an experiment into the electronic sphere, and its god damn perfect for the day after a steroid session. Big remix potential. Soundcloud DOWNLOAD
