With this week's release of Ani DiFranco's new album, 'Which Side Are You On?' we asked Amy to come up with the best feminist, girl-power anthems of all time. Check out her picks below! [...]
Panik - Bratmobile Greetings from my mother's house. She's in the U.S.A. right now so i get to house sit a few days a week, feed her cats and use her internet. It's nice here. And warm. Wilberforce forever! Amazingly this song was still on our old computer, so i actually have something to post. I've been cool for a while, you know? Actually i'm just old. I don't think there is another band who makes me feel as tough as i [...]

In 2001, a four-day, female-centric indie rock festival known as Ladyfest Midwest landed in Chicago with a mission to raise funds and treat spectators to sights and sounds of famed lady rockers such as Le Tigre, Tegan & Sara and Bratmobile. Ten years later, the organizers have announced an anniversary edition to take place August 19-21 boasting talented local female musicians. The festival will also once again raise funds for the Chicago Women's Health Center . The festivities kick-off on Friday, August 19 with a dance party at Northwest side club Late [...]
Bratmobile: Cherry Bomb Jabberjaw Los Angeles, CA 6/27/93 It's day 2 of Riot Grrrl week here at TSOI and it's a good one. Bratmobile were one of the very few bands that I always wanted to see but never had the opportunity. Truth be told, I was a bigger Cold Cold Hearts and The Peechees fan. I did get to see both those bands, so technically I did see 100% of "Bratmobile" , just in different forms. OK, not quite the same, but close. This is a great [...]

Grass Widow From: San Francisco, California, United States This blogging lark ain't as easy as it looks. How do you describe the sound of a band without resorting to tired and worn cliches? How do you find the words without referencing the usual motley collection of bands old and new that sound vaguely familiar to the music the new objects of your affection are producing. For some reason this [...]

Gimme brains - Bratmobile The greatest band to never use their guitar for chords. OK, they sometimes did. The greatest band in a lot of senses. Ladies, Women and Girls might be the best reformation album ever. Allison Wolfe - her splits and her jumping up and down and her connection with the audience - might be the best frontperson for any band ever. I have a feeling i missed them on a tour here. I'll kick myself if i did. Or [...]
:: If initial reports are correct, Arcade Fire 's The Suburbs will top the Billboard charts . :: Coachella has announced dates for 2011 already. :: A 9-year-old metalhead blogger calls it pretty straight when it comes to Reign in Blood by Slayer . :: I know you want to get your hands on that new Grinderman vinyl . Just like when I was 5, and I wanted to get my hands on every Over the Top [...]

Tonight the Bloody Rag Collective presents a riot grrrl cover band show benefiting the Chicago Women's Health Center at Locked Out! The show promises to offer all our favorite Bikini Kill, Sleater Kinney, Huggy Bear, Excuse 17 songs and more. The show is also all ages and on a $5-$10 sliding scale (and benefits a great cause) so there's no excuse not to go! Check out a few of our favorite riot grrrl/queercore songs and see you there! Bikini Kill [...]

MTV and Paramount Pictures have released information regarding the May 11th release of the COMPLETE SERIES OF DARIA . FINALLY. Now we can see our beloved Fashion Club as much as possible. We can giggle with Daria and Jane when Upchuck starts some shit. And we can gaze dreamily at Trent and ask ourselves why our own lives are so barren of these imagination people. I want to go there. The best part? It's the ENTIRE series in 1 allegedly low priced 8 disc set. Uh...I don't care how much it is. My bank account will be depleted [...]

Kathleen Hanna has donated a bunch a collection of her zines + assorted writings to the NYU's Fales Library, for their brand new Riot Grrrl Collection? And we just heard on Soul Ponies that Kate Wadkins is gonna be moderating a Riot Grrrl panel during Sarah Lawrence's Women's History Month conference?? Two things are happening here: 1. New York as a whole just got a million times cooler and 2. 2010 is clearly the year of the long awaited Riot Grrrl comeback!! Super exciting for aging ladies like myself who [...]

A few days back the trailer for the upcoming Runaways movie starring our girl KStew was released. As you will see when you watch the trailer there's a scene where Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett gives somebody "sex eyes" in a club or something. I sincerely hope that the sex eyes aren't directed at some dude because we all KNOW Joan Jett is a huge lez...and KStew probably is too , so it just wouldn't be believable. That being said, I'm not so sure Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie is believable either, so I'm sure the sex eyes ARE [...]
In case you hadn't noticed, Pitchfork is getting its "Best of the Decade" on this week. Feel free to stop over there and get depressed about how many classic albums were deemed "less good" than Vampire Weekend (#50). But rather than pick apart that questionable list, I'd like to direct your attention to a list that's a little less self-important: Take a look at Spin 's (heavily SoCo-sponsored) ranking of the 50 best cover songs of all time. All the usual suspects are there: The Raincoats' rendition of "Lola"; William Shatner's infinitely bizarre [...]
In the mid-'90s the Riot Grrl scene in the Pacific Northwest was dominant. Band's like Bikini Kill screeched their way through feminist-leaning lyrics while bashing out some of the hardest punk rock of the time. One of the band's on the forefront was Bratmobile. The band released an EP and an album before breaking up. They reunited in the early '00s for a pair of new albums, but we haven't

June is nearly over, and with that we shall celebrate LGBT Pride month (thanks Obama) , yes it's no longer just Gay Pride, which I think is awesome. Here in NYC specifically we've just ended Pride week , a week filled with marches, parades and parties all over the city. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the catalyst for the modern LGBT rights movement. We are still fighting for equal rights but with more and more states allowing same sex marriage and with a democrat in office again, it seems likely [...]

Just what the world needed, me talking about music, instead of writing about it. For some sycophantic reason, I've been wanting to do a podcast for a while and well, I've finally I gone and done it. It's racked with uhms, ahhs and mistakes, like when I say that the British Sea Power brothers are in the Brakes. I'm too lazy to go back and fix it to say that it's the Electric Soft Parade Brothers. I'm sure you guys could care less anyway, mistakes are punk rock, no? We're keepin' it real and raw, no second takes going on [...]

In Justice as fairness, then, the equal basic liberties are the same for each citizen and the question of how to compensate for a lesser liberty does not arise. But the worth, or usefulness, of liberty is not the same for everyone. As the difference principle permits, some citizens have, for example, greater income and wealth and therefore greater mean of achieving their ends. When this principle is satisfied, however, this lesser worth of liberty is compensated for in this sense: the all-purpose means available to the least advantaged members of society to achieve their ends would be even less [...]

Hello Handsome is the one-girl garage pop project of Sarah K. On her MySpace she lists influences from the TVPs to Sonic Youth. What I'm hearing on "Courting Song" are things like Cub, Bunnygrunt, and a little bit of Bratmobile. It's pretty solid grrrl pop and the totally fantastic, almost blues-y, lead-in to the song's finishing coda is surprising and pretty memorable – memorable enough for me to tell you that you HAVE to listen to it. [MP3]: Hello Handsome :: Courting Song (Highly Rec'd!!) Hello Handsome [...]
