The following is a collection of reviews of eleven of my favourite albums of 2011, a top 11 of 2011 if you will. I'd like to note that while these releases are technically my top 11 albums, all of the songs featuring on today's program I enjoyed and encourage you to check them out (info can be found in the play list below). 1. The Black Lips – Arabia Mountain [...]

Tweet So the year is winding down and it's getting to the point where we're being constantly assaulted by album of the year lists [see how I expressed list-fatigue but still plugged ours? Shameless]. With all the looking back that's been going on I've stumbled on a few 2011 releases that are never gonna make best-ofs, but still deserve a little loving before the year is up. "Jive With The Killer Instinct" by Brazilian Money , an [...]

Tweet Brazilian Money , a band that we've featured before who have a new and mightily focussed 6-track EP out, turned me on to Little Jungles, and I'm sure glad they did: "Winter Was Warmer", an impossibly delicious slice of shoegaze that's drenched in early nineties influences, has instantly become one of my favourite tracks of the year so far, and the rest of Little Jungles' debut "Wuts Goin Thru Yer Head" is pretty gorgeous too. "Drive Yerself Crazy" opens [...]

I've been on Brazilian Money for the past few months, grabbing a few singles here and there from the Edmonton garage punk band. For nearly two years, the band has been putting out self-promoted material (their debut album and a four-track 7"), all a collective spin of noisy garage and Black Lips -stylized flower punk. The group's newest 10-track LP, produced over at Totally Disconnected , is lo-fi slopfest, with little less of a coherent core and little more of a blasting effigy. There's something to be said about the state of lo-fi music, [...]

Tweet Garrett Johnson's previous band was called 'The Wicked Awesomes!' Fantastic. His new band's name might not give it away so quickly, but Garrett's tongue is still firmly planted in his cheek with Brazilian Money. On "This Is Not A Dream", their album released last month, Garrett's mischievous attitude combines with scrappy, experimental, garage guitar, and the result is some compelling college party rock. The funky bassline and drunken singalong vocals of "Give Up That Dog" get the goofball rolling straight away. If things [...]
Garrett Johnson started his band Brazilian Money in Edmonton, Alberta, after his last band (The Wicked Awesomes!) broke up for a time. Being the kind of guy to not let something like a lack of musicians hold him back, Johnson set to work making new music on his own, recording everything himself at home. His new album, This Is Not a dream certainly sounds like it was recorded at home, and that's part and parcel of it's freaky charms. Admittedly, when I first started listening to the record, I thought it was just [...]

Canucks, Brazilian Money , dropped a new tape via Totally Disconnected , This Is Not A Dream , and it is a whole lotta awesome. It is jangly ,dirty and a ton of fun. You should be listening to this..seriously. Best news... it is free for a limited time here . These two tracks just slay. Brazilian Money- Give Up That Dog Brazilian Money- Party Til I'm Dead

Kelowna's Brazilian Money (formerly Edmonton based) have a new tape / lp "This Is Not A Dream". It's avail for "limited edition" free download. Brazilian Money - Give Up That Dog Brazilian Money - Put Out That Cigarette

-- Brazilian Money are a double-drumming four piece from Edmonton, Alberta. Writer Garrett Johnson started in Edmonton's tightest band (The Mitts) and quickly parted for Edmonton's loosest band (The Wicked Awesomes!). Brazilian Money have released one EP to "critical" acclaim and successfully completed a cross-Canada tour. Continuing with their omnifarious pop flirtations, Brazilian Money's follow-up to the hugely popular Friendly Neighbor EP is a monstrous attack against the DIY pop vernacular. Existing in the inexplicable pop-punk-fringe territory, Doing What I Want contains four wild adventures into chromatic catchiness, granular distortion, and anthemic harmonies. [...]
