Austin, Texas-born Martin Crane (brainchild of Brazos ) blends perfectly into the NYC Indie scene. Since his debut album in 2009, Crane fell out of touch with his purpose but reclaims it with "Saltwater," an album dedicated to self-reflection and spirituality (due out May 28, 2013). I guess that can happen after flooding your veins with booze for a few years, as the artist claimed he did. The mellow vocals paired with quiet guitar chords and well-crafted percussion fuse together to make for a peaceful listen. Check them out during their residency at NYC's Cameo [...]

I received a message from Stuarto requesting I cover his show in the late afternoon hours of Friday, March 8. After a minute or two to think about it, I agreed. In all the times I've covered for his show over the past year and a half, I have never done a show that gives a nod to his show, which often features more mainstream music including a handful of tunes from the 60s and 70s. For March 8, I decided this needed to change. I pieced together quite the show for the first two [...]

Brazos' previous effort, Phosphorescent Blues , was a sleeper of an album. It was released at the tail end of 2009, late enough to affect its overall ranking on Best of lists for that year, and lost in the overall shuffle that happens with the transition from one year to the next. But I took my time with it, digging deeper than the superficial listen its release date would normally warrant, and in turn I was rewarded. Phosphorescent Blues was (and is) a solid, enjoyable album, and is one that I continue to come back to when I'm burned [...]

Brazos is fronted by Brooklyn-via-Austin artist Martin McNulty Crane, who released his debut under the Brazos name in 2009. That album is called Phosphorescent Blues , and was crafted after a 1969 poem called "The Observer" by feminist/radical Adrienne Rich. The acclaim Crane received for Phosphorescent Blues ultimately landed Brazos on the Dead Oceans roster, and later this year (May 28 to be exact) the band will release their follow up, a nine-song LP called Saltwater . "How The Ranks Was Won" is among [...]

Brazos has announced they will release their second full-length, Saltwater , May 28, 2013 on Dead Oceans. Saltwater will be the band's first release for the label. Created in a single weekend by Brazos frontman Martin Crane and some handy friends, the video is an eclectic mix of images that introduce Brazos as a concept and illustrate the song's narrative. Crane explains, "'How the Ranks Was Won' is about a kid who finds the empty ship his ancestors came over on which is now a ghost ship. He boards it, and takes it back. It's about taking charge of your memory and [...]

Now That's What I Call 2009! I had so much fun making the 2008 HDPP , I figured it was only fitting to follow up with my favorite hits from 2009. There were so many great albums to choose from, but as I discovered during this exercise, it is very hard to put together a cohesive mix as it seems my favs were quite an eclectic collection of styles. Since today is 12-12-2012, I really tried hard to reduce this list down to 12 songs... but 15 is as close as [...]

Matthew E. White - Big Inner Record Label - Hometapes/Spacebomb Release Date - August 21, 2012 It's time that we rescue a genre -- blue-eyed soul. While the actual version of soul feels truncated with the Roots on Fallon and old masters continuing to tour while their peers die off, the blue-eyed kind (aka made by white people) has been enjoying a bit of a renaissance due, mainly, to Bon Iver's insistence on calling his music "soul," which I suppose it is. Emotionality overcomes [...]
