Darren of the Inveresk Street blog rightly pointed out that most of the musicians who died in 2009 featured in the two previous posts lived to a ripe age. As every year, there were exceptions. Poor Taylor Mitchell, for example, was only 19 and had just released her debut album when she was attacked and killed by coyotes. Others who died young in 2009 included Jeff Hanson (31), Steven Gately (33), guitarist Jack Rose (38), Chris Feinstein of The Cardinals (42), Vic Chesnutt (45), Jay Bennett (45) and, of course, Michael Jackson (50) (EDIT: as well as former [...]

It's freezing cold, raining like crazy and I've been trapped in the house all day trying to entertain my two stir crazy kids. I've played a thousand games of Jenga, built forts, built Legos, taught a few dirty jokes, broken up fights and showed them every funny cat video I could find on YouTube. I've pretty much exhausted every rainy day idea I could think of, and have now started playing amateur paleontologist by excavating "treasures" buried deep in our bursting-at-the-seams record wall. That's where I unearthed this little gem, a record that many friends and I might have been [...]

Bread Everything I Own Thanks to Land of the Lost , we're now living in the post- Will Ferrel Era, and our karaoke choices should reflect this new reality, which means purging Journey from the set-list. Don't fret it too much, there's still a whole number of songs out there yet used by Mr. Ferrel & his music supervisor, and so I present you with a parent-approved, nostalgia-inducing and crowd-pleasing sleeper karoake hit, Bread 's Everything I Own .

This is disgustingly awesome. Kittiwat Unarrom baked and sculped body-part shaped bread for a show in Ratchaburi, Thailand. Pretty damn gross, yes. But a very cool message: "When people see the bread, they don't want to eat it. But when they taste it, it's just normal bread. The lesson is 'don't judge just by outer appearances." See pics and video . (Thanks, Timothy !)

Truly, the best thing since sliced bread are sliced bread looking notebooks. They are designed Burak Kaynak and Cem Has and are meant to be the new schedule-keeping fad. They come as a dozen with the number of the month on the ridge of each. It's bound to give the diary a new make-over and a stylish new norwegian-wood colored aura. You can get them here or click below for more pics. Posted in [...]

I´m a strange music person. I´ve sometimes heard of the most obscure and elusive krautdiscorock, and never heard of the huge pop hits of our time. One of these is Bread´s 1972 love song Everything I Own . Well it´s not that I ever heard it, it rang the proverbial bell, but it never registered. Now it has, and I want to share its beauty with you beautiful people. MP3 Bread - Everything I Own ( Alt. Link )

If you have read this blog for any amount of time, you know I have not hidden my affection for talented singer, songwriter and guitarist, Juliana Hatfield. Her album, Become What You Are , remains one of my favorites and, in my opinion, was one of the best albums of the 90s. She recently took part in the Bruce Springsteen's "Hangin' Out On E Street" project with an excellent cover of "Cover Me" and she also just put out a new CD, How To Walk Away. [...]

Video Nasties - Hearts and bones * (mon ordi est mort, si quelqu'un a le mp3 et peut m'aider ce sera cool) J'avais adoré les deux premiers 73 des Video Nasties , secs comme des coups de trique... For the first time since, oh, say, 1991, I had a tennis lesson this week. I signed up for a series of classes with the Portland parks department. Being in Portland, its held in a big indoor facility, out of the rain. But it is also across the street from the big bakery in town. And so, as I practice my forehand and backhand and run through different footwork drills, the air is thick with the smell of baking white bread. There's a guy in my class who looks like Lee Harvey Oswald and he hits [...]

Something about the holidays and all the old Christmas classics playing in stores makes me sentimental for some verrry cheesy music. I'm talking disgustingly sappy. Example: The Goodbye Girl by David Gates of the band Bread . This is not a proud moment for the blog. Interesting trivia about Mr. Gates, according to Wiki: His high school band backed Chuck Berry during a concert. How Back to the Future!! Bread :If a Picture Paints a Thousand [...]

if you are too young to remember the late 80s, or young enough not to question, you might be under the illusion that stock, aitken and waterman were cool. they were never cool. almost no one over the age of 13 would have admitted to liking any of their music, apart from the artists who glossed over their involvement - princess, i do mean you. all of saw's artists had a story. kylie and jason were aussie soap stars who denied being an item, sonia was from liverpool and had starred in bbc comedy 'bread', rick [...]

In light of the Biden/Palin debate tonight wherein Sarah Palin evaded any question of substance and was not held to answer for any false statements (neither by Biden nor by the moderator, Gwen Ifill); wherein Sarah Palin purported to know something about foreign policy while at the same time making ridiculous statements about it; wherein Sarah Palin showed no emotion whatsoever except to wink (!) at the audience, at the newscasters, and at her husband, even when Senator Biden choked up (as he often does) when talking about his dead wife and daughter; [...]

Call it what you will: Soft Rock, Yacht Rock , 70s AM Gold. Its music that I am old (young?) enough to remember coming out of my parent's A.M. radio in the 1970's. How can you not love the sweet mellow groves? A few months ago my buddy and fellow blogger The Second Single sent me several mixes totaling over 100 MP3s of 70s and early 80s soft rock hits. These are sixteen of my favorites. So hard to pick just 16.... So Smoooootttthhhhh..... [...]

Been having one of those periods we all get when things just seem a bit too much to be bothered with. Lethargy, apathy, disillusionment, call it whatever you will, but that's partly the reason for my lack of posts recently. It will pass, I'm sure. However, in this 'altered state' I've also been a little sorry to see so few posts, blogs, articles, etc. on the "inter-web" that have sparked the usual level of interest for me. Hence the lack of the 'Highlights of the [...]
I'm not big on the whole Valentine's Day lovefest that so many people enjoy. Don't get me wrong, I'm big on LOVE it's just that whether I'm coupled or single, the holiday itself always seems a bit too cliched to tell you the truth. It just makes no sense to me. Why spend just one day a year doing what we should all be
