I caught up with Micah, Andrea and Trevor from Ann Arbor, Michigan's Breathe Owl Breathe before their set at San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill. Their live show is upbeat and whimsical. The book is split up into two stories, one for night and one for day , each flowing seamlessly into the next. This is the world of the Michigan trio. The light persistent rain couldn’t keep San Francisco’s damp masses from huddling together for a night of varied folksters at Bottom of the Hill on February 6th. The evening starter, Oakland’s very own singer/songwriter Morgan Manifacier , was accompanied by a celloist. Both were seated, but that did not stop an enthusiastic crowd from gobbling them up. The room is everything you’d want in rock’n’roll venue; dark, grimy, and loud, which is not exactly what you want when you’re going to see bright, clean, and relaxed music. The challenge for the acts then becomes to use their music to make the audience forget their surroundings and transport them somewhere else. On this occasion Breathe Owl Breathe and Laura Gibson both gave it their best shot, to varying levels of success. [...]
It seems the only way to break out creatively in this over-saturated music scene is to branch out and expand past a simple recorded album paired with a tour. Enter Breathe Owl Breathe ; who is currently touring with Laura Gibson in support of their combination children's book and vinyl 73, The Listeners/These Train Tracks . I am becoming more and more confident in talking on the radio. I am slowly developing my voice - my on-air personality. There is still room for improvement; namely in the transition from Stuarto's show to mine, but I'll get there eventually.
