by Fensepost

Each year I shun Christmas music like it's the plague. It begins too early, is far too repetitive, and, quite frankly, is a bit boring. That is, until this year. It began with "The Week Between", a new track off One Christmas at a Time , an LP that finds Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick (The Long Winters) collaborating for a full album of original Christmas music. My thoughts began to change. If this song can be so amazing, what about other [...]

I had been on a roll, pumping out posts on a daily basis, then I hit a wall and needed an immediate break. But my breaks are typically filled with, well, something else. They're aren't true breaks , in the informal-synonym-for-vacation sense of the word. That's right, it was pledge week at KSVR and KSVU. Being pledge week, I came in Wednesday night and sat in on Jackson Stewart's Blue Boulevard and we [...]

And I'm not talking about the wild you indie folk are used to, likely boozing it up and partying every night. I'm talking about the working life, the stress of the job, the busy days and exhaustion-laden nights. Going to bed at 9:30; I feel old. So on Fridays, I look forward to cutting loose. I needed something epic this week. Something loud, raucous, and rambunctious. And I found it in this playlist. At the studio, 10 pm, the lights are dim [...]

by Turntable Kitchen

I caught up with Micah, Andrea and Trevor from Ann Arbor, Michigan's Breathe Owl Breathe before their set at San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill. Their live show is upbeat and whimsical. In fact, I'd venture as far as to say I'd never seen a band appear to have so much fun on stage (The Decemberists probably come in a close 2nd though). Whether Micah was performing barrel rolls, play acting as if he were swimming, or creating giraffe hand puppets to accompany a song's lyrics; it was often enough to elicit uncontrollable giggling and knowing, [...]

The book is split up into two stories, one for night and one for day , each flowing seamlessly into the next. This is the world of the Michigan trio. An innocently fantastical planet made up of dragon/princess pen-pals, swim lessons, andwerewolves, that continue their existenceunbeknownst to any sort of reality outside. Last Wednesday the band invited fans into their fantasy landscape during a loveably kooky set at The Echo. The band created anendearinglycasual atmosphere, dressed as if [...]

by The Bay Bridged

The light persistent rain couldnt keep San Franciscos damp masses from huddling together for a night of varied folksters at Bottom of the Hill on February 6th. The evening starter, Oaklands very own singer/songwriter Morgan Manifacier , was accompanied by a celloist. Both were seated, but that did not stop an enthusiastic crowd from gobbling them up. I do suspect a few ringer audience members were in attendance, as the activity near the front of the stage threatened to shake free a couple of ceiling tiles. The room is everything youd want in rocknroll venue; dark, grimy, and loud, which is not exactly what you want when youre going to see bright, clean, and relaxed music. The challenge for the acts then becomes to use their music to make the audience forget their surroundings and transport them somewhere else. On this occasion Breathe Owl Breathe and Laura Gibson both gave it their best shot, to varying levels of success. [...]
