I didn't post at all on FensePost last week. That's crazy. I had been on a roll, pumping out posts on a daily basis, then I hit a wall and needed an immediate break. I caught up with Micah, Andrea and Trevor from Ann Arbor, Michigan's Breathe Owl Breathe before their set at San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill. Their live show is upbeat and whimsical. In fact, I'd venture as far as to say I'd never seen a band appear to have so much fun on stage (The Decemberists probably come in a close 2nd though). Breathe Owl Breathe 's latest release is a 7" held between the pages of a children's story book . The book is split up into two stories, one for night and one for day , each flowing seamlessly into the next. This is the world of the Michigan trio. The light persistent rain couldnt keep San Franciscos damp masses from huddling together for a night of varied folksters at Bottom of the Hill on February 6th. The evening starter, Oaklands very own singer/songwriter Morgan Manifacier , was accompanied by a celloist. Both were seated, but that did not stop an enthusiastic crowd from gobbling them up. I do suspect a few ringer audience members were in attendance, as the activity near the front of the stage threatened to shake free a couple of ceiling tiles. Photos by Philip Cosores Its kind of strange going to see a couple of folk acts in a space like The Echo. The room is everything youd want in rocknroll venue; dark, grimy, and loud, which is not exactly what you want when youre going to see bright, clean, and relaxed music. The challenge for the acts then becomes to use their music to make the audience forget their surroundings and transport them somewhere else. On this occasion Breathe Owl Breathe and Laura Gibson both gave it their best shot, to varying levels of success. It seems the only way to break out creatively in this over-saturated music scene is to branch out and expand past a simple recorded album paired with a tour. Enter Breathe Owl Breathe ; who is currently touring with Laura Gibson in support of their combination children's book and vinyl 73, The Listeners/These Train Tracks . I am becoming more and more confident in talking on the radio. I am slowly developing my voice - my on-air personality. There is still room for improvement; namely in the transition from Stuarto's show to mine, but I'll get there eventually. On December 6th, Breathe Owl Breathe will be releasing a 7" for the singles "The Listeners" and "These Train Tracks," along with a children's book that was written, illustrated, carved, and printed by BOB's Micah Middaugh . Because each canvas-covered volume is being handcrafted and assembled by the band, the release will be limited to 750 copies. Pre-orders are currently available here . This one actually feels like it could be a Noah and the Whale track.
