"I mean, look at me— I'm an actor. An actor, for crying out loud. You know how much rejection I face every day? But in this business of show, you have to have the heart of an angel and the hide... of an elephant." Words of wisdom from the perennial actor / never-nude, Tobias Funke. Yes, not everyone's cut out to be a a DeNiro, or a Regis, or a Pinkett-Smith, but there are a select few actors & actresses that have reached the pantheon of greatness, which is, of course, being memorialized in song. Such [...]

Bree Sharp: Boys of Summer [ Purchase ] A cover of a song about summer? Hey, I can do that too! Don Henley's 1984 hit "Boys of Summer" is perhaps one of the quintessential songs about the season in the last few decades. The feel of the music just feels like summer, and the lyrics exemplify the season and how it, and us, change over the years. In the song, as in life, summer begins as a season of fun and adventure that seems [...]
As everyone already knows, summer solstice has arrived. We've had gorgeous weather here in New York City recently and I never want it to end. I only wish I didn't have to work and could spend all my days at the parks and beaches in and around the city. Instead I will appease myself with some summer tunes to celebrate the official start of my favorite hot and humid season. Cub "Summer Samba" (comp. Marcos Valle) Bree Sharp "Boys of Summer" [...]

Yes, it's Veterans Day, a "bank holiday", as the brits like to say; like so many other bloggers, I should be posting songs on the topic. But a recent bout of the dreaded H1N1 flu has left me late for end-of-term grading, perhaps one of the biggest sins a teacher can commit. As such, instead of taking advantage of the fine fall day outside, I find myself hunkered down over the dining room table, slowly making my way through a huge pile of previously-unseen papers and midterm exams. The post below was originally [...]

I love it when I find things I have in common with celebrities or super-ooooper-duper rich people... mostly because I am NOT one of those people, but also because it's cool, it's a conversation starter, and it's something to brag about to my dad. "Hey, dad! Guess what I have in common with Bruce Springsteen?" "It probably doesn't have anything to do with talent, looks, intelligence, style, or class... so I'm going to guess... you both own copies of his records?" "Aw, CRAP!!!!!" [...]

It don't think I've heard as cute of a debut EP as The Robots in Love EP in a while. But Beautiful Small Machines aren't exactly indie music rookies: the duo is Bree Sharp and Don DiLego. Bree Sharp has had some hits in her time; I was a bit enamored with her 2006 album More B.S. Fans of The Submarines and Mates of State are likely to get hooked on this great electro-pop. Stream the EP here . Beautiful Small Machines -Counting Back To 1 [...]
As I write this, I have a stack of CDs staring me down next to me on my bedside table, looking at me as though I am a terrible person for not giving them the proper listening/enjoyment time that they require in order to write a review. So many amazing artists (new and old) have [...]

Don't know why I didn't do this earlier. The White Stripes have been one of my favorite bands ever since I saw a video of them performing "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" on MTV surrounded by inanely dancing candy cane "fans"( here it is ). Since then I've seen them live four times, and hope they reunited this year for another go round. While we wait though, many others are keeping their tunes alive. The Dynamics - Seven Nation Army Turns out there's a cover [...]
There are only about two weeks left until 2009, so I thought I would do a recap of the Featured Artists here on TheFrontloader.com. All of these artists are worth discovering (or revisiting)... so if you missed them the first time around, here's your chance to catch up! Follow the links to the [...]
A few years ago, my friend Dave let me hear a song called "David Duchovney" by Bree Sharp. As you may know already, David Duchovney is the guy who played the somber Mulder character on the hit show The X-Files. I thought the song was quite clever and soon went out [...]
David Duchovny is promoting the hell out of the new X-Files movie. It's an older, wiser, and grimier looking Fox Mulder, and I'm not sure I still want to believe. Speaking of Duchovny , I don't know how many of you remember Bree Sharp, but her claim to fame in the late 90s was penning a song about her love for David Duchovny . And then they played the song on the radio and everyone responded with, "Wow, that girl either insane, or incredibly talented. Or both." Afterwards, she continued releasing albums [...]
I'm in the midst of finals these days – hence the less frequent posting – but I'll tide you over with some school and test themed covers. Now back to "Immigration, Race, and Ethnicity in Contemporary American Society". Woohoo! Snatch - Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd) Sometimes the most interesting cover is the best, sometimes it isn't. I didn't do enough research to know which is the case here, but the moment I heard this funk-disco version I knew it was too unique [...]

In my other life, I'm a middle school teacher; I spend most of my days surrounded by twelve year olds, trying to balance entertainment with mentorship, and curriculum with life lessons. Before that, I taught in a boarding high school, tutored gifted and talented kids in a tiny rural elementary school, ran a before-school program, and did public demonstrations at a science museum. And before that, I was a dropout. And before that, I was a goofball, who needed a little good advice now and then, but couldn't really sit still long enough [...]
We got another new neighbour in the cover blog community: blowin' your cover . The blog has been up since November, but what's new to me may be new to you. We welcome new sources for covers... a little cover diversity, if you will. Some of the last few posts include features on The Mountain Goats , Ida , Buzzcocks , and The Magnetic Fields . So if that sounds like your thing, definitely keep your ears on blowin' your cover because you probably won't find that stuff [...]

MAILBAG! Another mailbag post! Some good stuff this time, too. Drugscene. Here’s a band I’m pretty excited about, especially since The Killers is one of my favorite new bands. Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I’ve Done, and Mr. Brightside are all in my top-10 most-played tunes on my iPod. (If you’re curious, the top ten also includes Jay-Z’s 99 Problems and Dirt Off Your Shoulder; Feist’s Inside Out; and DCFC’s Soul Meets Body.) [...]
Lately the Long Winters and Midlake have been getting a lot of blog coverage, and I'm here to add my two repetitive cents..... They're pretty damn awesome. I've already posted my favorite Long Winters' song (Pushover), but I'll do it again.... The Long Winters - Pushover (a personal fav) The Long Winters - Honest The Long Winters - Ultimatum (rec'd) Buy "Putting the Days To Bed [...]
