Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer." That's a dry, clinical term for what Albini actually does, but it makes sense that he'd prefer to be seen that way. Over the past few decades, Albini has overseen the creation of countless numbers of recorded artifacts. And even though he's been an outspoken opponent of the major-label system (and of other underground-rock heroes), he's known to work with just about anyone who requests his services, whether it's a major-label juggernaut like '90s radio-grunge rulers Bush or the [...]

Sticking with fond feelings for the '90s. Last Splash came on during a night drive recently, and I got a bit of that old driving-around-rocking feeling from high school days past. Very nice indeed even now that I'm double that tender age. This tune in particular has a burnt, slightly baked quality that I quite enjoy. I'm not really sure the part with the big drums is necessary. But then, it was the '90s and who can fuss with bands that crushed on crunchy guitars. The Breeders [...]

Stumbled across these recently. The Breeders' Last Splash demos are presented here. The Breeders will always remind me of high school and like lots of people in '93-'94, "Cannonball" was the cornerstone of any respectable mixtape. Thankfully the Kim Deal connection is how I learned about The Pixies , which is how I learned about a lot of things. Funny how shit works like that sometimes. Anyway, there's plenty of good stuff here. Enjoy. [...]

Tweet The Brooklyn trio started off as a duo (Jeremy & Maria) back in 2006 while attending art school. Later joined by Max and signed by Cascine they released "Ladies Man Effect" EP during Summer 2010. This is a B-side from their full length album "Delusions", that was out in May this year. To throw up muses in the air, Ms. Usbeck reminds me of Tanya Donelly, Belly's frontwoman (who was also in The Breeders), and I guess by reminiscing the '90 I'm also revealing my age, but [...]
Take no prisoners Steven Frank Albini -singer/guitarist (Big Black, Rapeman, Flour), producer (Nirvana, The Breeders, Superchunk) and music journalist (Matter, Forced Exposure)-actually has a warm and cuddly side. It's true! The sweet and alluring fuzzies are expressed via his new blog, mariobatalivoice , in which Albini documents what he cooks for his wife, Heather. He explicates it thusly: "The name comes from the way I bring her food in bed and present it to her using an imitation of Mario Batali's voice from TV. "I don't give quantities or exact recipes because I eyeball [...]
Words by Rick Moslen I briefly considered having a Part 1 and Part 2 for this segment. Why? Well your favorite bands showcased their best work on this English label, and a list of thirty-five albums still runs far too short. A speedy mention of 4AD 's 30-year old history recalls the sweat-enduring mystic of the Cocteau Twins or the glacial European folk of Dead Can Dance . You piss your pants from The Birthday Party 's nihilistic insanity, while tears trickle from your eyes when reading Mojave [...]

"I Wanna Be Me" By Bleech. We've been fans of Bleech for quite a while now. Tracks like 'Are You Listening?' Is It True That Boys Don't Cry?' and ' Taking Over' soon had our musical radar beeping with unfettered joy. It therefore remains one of life's great mysteries why we haven't interviewed them before now. There's no valid reason for such impropriety on our part, despite trying to adopt the maxim " don't count every hour in the [...]
Kim and Kelley Deal turn 50 today and the iconic twins have quite a cake helping them celebrate the occasion: Read More...
…When you open yourself up to creative possibilities some interesting projects can arise, as Kelley Deal of The Breeders discovered. The native Daytonian was sitting on the sofa in the living room of her home in the Historic South Park Neighborhood on a recent weekday night. Sitting beside her was Mike Montgomery of Cincinnati rockers [...]

Shuffled my "top rated" playlist and these were the first five songs to come up. Enjoy. Harry Nilsson: There Will Never Be (1967) The Breeders: Divine Hammer (1993) The Sonics: Bosshoss (1965) The Walkmen: All My Great Designs (2010) Don Ho: A Lover's Prayer (1966)
Listening to the The Joy Formidable is like taking a trip back to the early to mid-'90s when bands like The Breeders were suddenly "big." Up and down tempos climax with bombastic sonic blasts. The Breeders' Kim Deal lifted the template from her former band the Pixies , which influenced scores of bands that decade (most notably Nirvana ). Wales-based Joy Formidable takes the Breeders template and spiffs it up on The Big Roar (out in the U.S. on Tuesday). [...]

…the best music mixes cover a range of styles and emotions so we kept that in mind while compiling this Valentine's Day playlist. Like relationships, love songs come in many shapes and sizes, so we picked a cross-section of local bands, from '70s bluegrass act The Hotmud Family to the art-damaged electro-pop of Grizzzzy Bear, [...]
...today we introduce another contributor to our expanding team here at The Buddha Den, former Dayton Daily New Music Blog writer, Kris Neises. Let's see what Kris has to offer for his debut feature... …In the spirit of last weekend's 'Dayton Does Dayton' shows at Canal Street Tavern, the Den asked area musicians 'What their favorite [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Ed's Redeeming Qualities This weekend, Breeders violinist Carrie Bradley will go back to her roots -- the Boston alternative rock scene of the late '80s. Bradley's first band, the quirky folk-rock act Ed's Redeeming Qualities , retired in 1997 but is reuniting and returning to Boston for a one-off show at TT the Bear's club on Saturday, Jan.22. The event celebrates the [...]
