Brendan Benson had a fairly productive 2012. He started his own record label and publishing company , Readymade, and released his fifth solo album, What Kind of World . This year, The Raconteur has an equally hectic schedule, with plans to release a new song every month leading up to a full-length LP for Black Friday in November. For the month of June, Benson has unveiled "New Words of Wisdom". Benson's sometimes bluesy, sometimes folksy sensibility takes on a slightly Caribbean vibe, with the defiant acoustic guitar paired with the pseudo-tropical [...]

Cass McCombs [...]

Mark McCausland, left, and Oisin Leech of The Lost Brothers. Among all the new friends we made at South by Southwest (SXSW) this year, we really like The Lost Brothers. The "Losties" are a duo from Ireland who sing in close harmony, reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel or the Everly Brothers. Mark McCausland and Oisin Leech met in an dusty old Liverpool library in 2007. Comparing influences, they discovered they both played in various bands and had traveled to Liverpool to take their music to the next level. The pair shared a love of [...]
Brendan Benson has a knack for writing hooky classic pop songs, and ladies and gentleman, it doesn't get much more catchy than this. This little ditty lived in relative obscurity for a few years pre-Raconteurs, but once it hit an Itunes commercial this one had us all tapping our feet. While this song was the breakout, the album "The Alternative to Love" is full of winners just like it. The post "What I'm Looking For" - Brendan Benson (2005) appeared first on [...]

Benson's January effort, "Swimming," is one of 28 songs on a free SXSW sampler assembled by HGTV and Paste and available through Noisetrade . If you're not fully in the mood for next week's South by Southwest Music Festival (or if you're going to miss it), maybe this mix will help — there are songs from Leagues, City and Colour, Allah-Las, Josh Rouse, Billy Bragg, [...]

Parental Advisory is a new feature on Stereogum where we’ll talk to musicians who also happen to be parents. It can’t be easy to raise kids from a tour-bus bunk, or to explain to your toddler why random people keep walking up to you and asking if you want to get high with them, and we thought it would be interesting to learn how some of our favorites learn to live that double-life. And for our second installment, we talked to a slightly shell-shocked Brendan Benson, father of Declan, two and a half years, and Adeline, two weeks. We've also [...]

When the pair got together in 1995 to begin work on the Wellfed sessions, Benson was being lauded by critics & college radio djs as the savior of power pop, & [...]
