Jamie Campbell The music business is a strange place, full of weird and esoteric companies fulfilling weird and esoteric roles, so if you're not really sure what a publishing company does, you are excused - just smile and nod as I wish Bearsuit Publishing , run by the good folks at Indie Music Filter , a happy second anniversary. But what should be of immediate interest to you, dear reader, is the fact that they're celebrating the milestone with a party . A big party at the El Mocambo on September 16 [...]

So to further my effort for a bit of a "pop" infused Saturday, I bring another pseudo brit-psych-pop group, but this time from Halifax. Come on seriously, it couldn't be anything other than that with the album cover above, could it? In all honestly I am trying to not be as much as a purveyor of Sad Bastard Music as I usually am because I just started my vacation. Damn, this is feel good time. While Brent Randall and Co. might not be jump out of your seats and sing hallelujah, it is a bit more uplifting than [...]

In light of yesterday's events, It is impossible to start off the day with anything other than a tribute to the King of Pop. Michael Jackson may have never been considered an indie artist by any stretch of the imagination, but his brilliance and stature in the musical universe makes him one of the few greats who is able to transcend any type of label. Fans of every genre from country to metal to classical can appreciate his career and should feel no shame in admitting it. In fact, I would be willing to go so far as to say [...]

I dipped into the inbox tonight and discovered this little gem from Halifax, Nova Scotia's own Brent Randall and his Pinecones . Hell yeah, Brent and Band. It's a catchy, dreamy little ditty and I thought I'd pass along...oh, and there's an odd video to go along with it. Hear : Strangelove (Don't Be Lazy) [mp3] Check out the album, We Were Strangers In Paddington Green , on Links : Official Site [...]
Tuesday night saw Regina 6-piece Rah Rah play their second of two shows in Toronto this week. The gig on this night was at the famed El Mocambo. On the band's solid debut album, Going Steady, they tend to sound like a cross between the dramatic indie orchestral rock of Arcade Fire and the intelligent power pop of The New Pornographers. In a live setting it is definitely the art rock side that

posted by Matt: Strange Love (Don't Be Lazy) The Gideons - Hymns for Hers These brats are friends from Halifax, but this aint no plug. Their debut release is dynamite and is often spinning in my car. It's lo-fi and sloppy but it only adds to the charm. They have combined the best of 60's inspired garage (think The Gruesomes) , 70's power pop (The Raspberries/Badfinger), and shameless Beatlisms (The Rutles?). [...]

In independent music, anticipation can sometimes be just as important as the material itself. Artists have taken advantage of such leverage before, pushing an album's release date ahead or behind originally scheduled to keep in sync with the amount of foreseen hype. This practice is viewed by many as a shameful and manipulative way to monetize subpar material. While many artists are practically starving to be given any sort of recognition, it is usually the artists that are prominent enough to actually generate anticipation that partake in such actions. As for the others, it is usually just the result of [...]

Ernst Haeckel's Radiolaria by Melanie Strong German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist Ernst Haecke l (1834-1919) is not considered a household name by any means. His varied and extensive work gave rise to the terms ecology and First World War, the rise of Darwinism as a valid theory and the discovery and proposal of the Protista kingdom of organisms within biology. Perhaps his greatest and most enduring work is found in his artistic [...]

Way back in March, I was all about the new release from Brent Randall & the Pinecones , We Were Strangers in Paddington Green . Well, it seems the record was held up and is FINALLY going to hit the streets on January 20th/09. Also held up? My original review when it comes to search engines. So, for that reason and because like 10 people read it... I'll simply repost the original and hope you enjoy. myspace As I've mentioned many times before, [...]

As I've mentioned many times before, although I live in Vancouver, it's not all nature parks and pleasantries. In fact, there are homeless people everywhere, tons of violence and copious amounts of rain. It's an incredibly depressing walk on dark Monday mornings, but today was a bit different. Brent Randall 's blissful melodies boomed out of my headphones, and it was almost like being in that Coke commercial where Grand Theft Auto-land is suddenly a sunshine filled paradise. With the bouncing bass line, horns, sleigh bells, and playful electric noodle of Bluebirds, Flowers, [...]
Often times here on the hill we like to post full album reviews rather than individual songs, but sometimes we can't resist the single song styles. In this case, I'm posting two new songs from eclectic Halifax Troubadour Brent Randall and his backing band The Pinecones mainly because the Ack is so big on these guys that he's surely going to want to do the review when their full-length album drops. Incidentally, that full-length is entitled We Were Strangers in Paddington Green and is certainly a much-anticipated affair here in Halifax. If [...]
