The very name Nevada City calls to mind high dry plains, rocks and scrub brush, and whether or not this is what it actually looks like, the mental image a is perfect backdrop for the music of Brett Shady . His new album, The Devil To Pay , was recorded here in his home town with producer Dana Gumbiner (Joanna Newsom, The Moore Brothers). Here are two choice tunes from the album for your perusal. Endearing and catchy, “God, Change the Laws of The World” is a embraceable waltz, almost anthemic in [...]
Brett Sent his music to us at TWJ a week or so ago and I grabbed it to post about. There is something endearing about his songs that is easy to grab onto. He’s got a little bit of country, americana and pop to his sound. It’s hard to get people’s attention as an acoustic [...]

DOWNLOAD MP3: Brett Shady - "Angels, Ghosts And Demons" A young and very talented new musician named Brett Shady passed his folky debut full-length LP The Devil to Pay my way and I was immediately drawn in by how defined his songwriting abilities were. Produced by Dana Gumbiner (Joanna Newsom, The Moore Brothers, Mariee Sioux), The Devil to Pay is as much of an album about heartbreak and loss as it is about life and all of its many journey's. From it's artwork to it's lyrics, Shady draws [...]
My mom and me differ on our choices of music in a big way. She likes sugary sweet pop music, the kind you find on the radio or anything the Boston Globe music reviews tell her to buy, and I have taste that reaches a little wider than that (thank god). I might have thrown a Katy Perry CD in the trash recently. My mom likes to ask me if I have ever realized that all my music sounds the same and I like to ask her if she has had her hearing checked recently. Among the complaints I receive [...]

Welcome to the 4th On The iPod feature. This feature was created about seven months ago, and I was hoping to make it a more regular feature, but, totally understandably, it takes people a while to prepare their list of what could be their Top 10 Songs of All Time. To refresh your memories, let me recap what this feature entails. We are asking people, be they artists, listeners, or fans, what they would do if they were stranded on an island with an iPod that held only 10 songs. Which songs [...]

Tuneful singer-songwriter indie pop, folk and Americana sounds The opening track “Somebody Else,” of singer-songwriter Brett Shady’s solo debut is very good (especially for the terrific lyric “For every somebody somewhere in love / there’s somebody else”), but it’s the defeated loneliness of the second track, “Jerome, AZ” that sets the album’s emotional hook. Shady sings of giving up on his big city dream and heading for open skies. But even though he didn’t give up on his own big city dream, his initial discontent with Los Angeles, born of the dislocation and culture [...]
Photography by me. "Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time." - John Lubbock I've been toying with the idea of putting together a mixtape for a while now and I think that as we (or at least I) mourn the end of Summer (today, September 21st is the last day of [...]

On tour with Adam Kline and Jonathan Hansard as Golden Shoulders, Brett Shady opened the show at Yellow Feather Coffee with a set of his own material. The songs were great, and I regret not picking up his new album when I had the chance. Don't make the same mistake- The Devil To Pay was released on 8/10/2010 is now available on CD Baby . (My favorite song from the set? "Angels, Ghosts & Demons".) Brett Shady 9.16.2010 Yellow Feather Coffee, Denver, CO Source: [...]

It’s less than 60 days to the elections in November… my buddy The Prez “Obama” o’ America has been hard on the warpath, doing his best to convince voters to go with Democrats. He’s brought up plans like the $300 billion in tax incentives, he’s been steadfast on ending the tax-cuts for the wealthy, and he’s gone on ABC News to casually speak about how he deals with his kids, wife, and bad press. That’s alotta-Obama in the past few days. I don’t know where this will all lead to, but it’s apparent that [...]
Remember the post I did featuring Brett Shady? It’s right here, if not. Well, beautiful music...
A few days ago on Twitter I mentioned that when I come across that one gem in my inbox, it makes it all worthwhile when you've spent an hour wading through all of the submissions that are either tedious or terrible. Well that one gem I was talking about was Brett Shady, a dude from Burbank, California who just released his self-released debut album "The Devil To Pay" on August 10th. The song that got me hooked and swaying from side to side like an impatient drunk was "Angels, Ghosts And Demons", an upbeat barnstormer with a ubiquitous [...]

First, and just so we get this out of the way, I saw Spenny on the subway on the way home from school on Thursday. Very exciting. I almost challenged him to see who could stay on the subway longer, but, well, I've got stuff to do ya' know? Okay, now for the good stuff. Some good singer-songwriter stuff that has crossed my proverbial desk (I actually work on the couch - for the inquiring minds that want to know) in the last little while... 1. Jon McKiel [...]
