Day 5 of the Hand Drawn Dracula takeover welcomes a pair of true innovators. Together as members of Holy Fuck , Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh are making some of the most celebrated electronic music in the country; individually, they prove themselves to be dynamic artists ion their own right. Borcherdt records as a solo artist, contrasting Holy Fuck's experimental work with his subdued, atmospheric acoustic material, [...]

This is a re-posting because it is such a great album that I simply have to. A side note to the original post is that I did in fact go to the show I mention below and it was fantastic and had Brian sign my vinyl copy of the album! Please enjoy the experience of this album at some point in your life, it is a Slowcoustic all time best album. Original post from October 2008 and the album ended up being my #1 pick for best/favourite album of 2008...obviously. [...]

Austra @ Wrongbar: photo by Michael Ligon It's no wonder that I only saw two bands for my second night(on March 11) of Canadian Musicfest as my first night consisted of 6 bands in total, the first three which I reviewed a few days ago . Let's waste no time and continue onward. Next up for the midnight-and-onward festivities was Brian Borcherdt at The Garrison. Borcherdt is better known in most circles as the frontman of sound/beat manipulators Holy Fuck , but his work as a singer-songwriter [...]
Julie Fader Don't know what to do with yourself tonight? Well how about a triple shot of Toronto indie favorites at the El Mocambo. The line-up sees Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, By Divine Right, but you knew that already) hit the stage at 9:30, the aurally stunning Julie Fader at 10:30, and Montreal's Snailhouse at 11:30. Toronto - Holy Fuck is not your typical electronic band. Unlike the plethora of digital ensembles equipped with laptops and pre-programmed backing tracks, Holy Fuck set themselves apart by using a 35mm film synchronizer and toy keyboards to produce their analog noises. Say what you want about bands with expletives in their name: they're all about shock, they won't be able to reach the mainstream, or they're just offensive. Holy Fuck is the perfect name for this band. While watching the show I kept thinking: "Holy fuck, there are [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive The Juno Awards have added 'Electronic Album of the Year' to their list of accolades -- the 40th category to mark the Canadian music awards' 40th anniversary this year -- providing a future place for a wide-range of Canadian artists, ranging from techno legend Richie Hawtin , electro upstart CFCF and improv trio Cobblestone Jazz to indie electronic phenoms like Holy F--- , Crystal Castles and Fan [...]

Ultimately, my Thursday night at NXNE will be split between two equally amazing, but completely different stables of bands. I'll finish my evening listening to Andrew Vincent - I still owe him a drunken 10K jaunt - and Camp Radio as a part of the Kelp Records showcase , but it's the start of my evening that seems to have been custom made for my enjoyment. The Drake is playing host to the the bands on Hand Drawn Dracula and lets me see Fields of [...]

When we last saw Holy Fuck in New York City , the band took us by surprise. Having heard them numerous times, and attracted in part by their nifty name, their music drew us in like flies on stink. If you've ever seen these guys live, this analogy is only fitting, because a fly does not envision this stink how we perceive it, and its attraction is only natural – the same inclination I have towards the music of Holy Fuck. Borderline, their sound is a trance of rock and electronic music. Up to [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , New Music , Canada Holy F--- is one of Canada's fiercest live acts, but with a perpetually packed tour schedule, allotting time to capture their analogue electronic rock on record is a challenge. The band's last album, 2007's 'LP,' was pieced together from hasty sessions captured on tour stops in cities such as Amsterdam, London and New York, but this time out the band was determined to take their time. "It made more sense that we would go [...]

It's been a very, very long time since we had a nice simple podcast of me just chattering about music without extraneous distractions of various drunken people babbling to one another over the top of it. Last week was Ruth, Michael and Dylan, the week before that was Vic and Peej, then me and Mrs. Toad and then there was the one from Homegame, which was nuts, so this one is just calm and sensible and plain vanilla and basically just me playing some songs, wondering how to pronounce names like Borcherdt, and talking pish like usual. [...]
Like most "artistic types," I jot down random ideas in a notepad I keep with me. Brian Borcherdt from Holy Fuck is no different. He had two albums of songs stored on his laptop when it went missing in the trunk of a NYC cab. Years of work...gone! He eventually got everything back, but the experience made him decide to release the songs to the public-since they very nearly disappeared all together. You can download both albums, Torches and The Ward [...]

As I will not be involved with anything to do with Austin, TX this week I thought I would at least give my recommendations on a daily basis on what I recommend and wish I could see for SXSW (music wise). And if you are looking for an anti-SXSW diatribe, you will not find it - I am not going, have never been to but hope everyone gets the chance to see a band that they really love and "discover" someone that they will begin to love (music wise...more or less). Wednesday, March 17th [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Canada Most times that Brian Borcherdt is on stage he's got a strange gizmo in his hands. Best known as frontman for dance party improvisers Holy F--- , he's made career out of playing scavenged analog gear and random noisemaking machines. But last night at Canadian Music Fest he got to strap on his first love - the electric guitar -- with his brand-new band, Fields of Fur. The trio of Borcherdt on guitar [...]

Talk about a solid lineup and a solid venue. Paul Murphy's new personal outlet - Postdata - is locked and loaded on my Polaris ballot, and throwing the engaging Julie Fader and rock steady Brian Borcherdt into the mix makes this one of the best shows that will come out way this year. The three acts are going to spend an intimate evening playing for 60 - that's right, only 60 - people at The Sonic Temple . In such a small space, with a respectful crow you will get to [...]
by cheryl santa maria From rural Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to the bustling streets of Toronto, Ontario, Brian Borcherdt has left his mark in Canada's musical landscape. His career began in the mid-nineties, christened by the establishment of Dependent Music - an artist collective/ label which he founded - as well as his participation in a successful indie outfit known to locals as Burnt Black . Upon moving to Toronto Borcherdt played with By [...]
New Music Canada Track of the Day. Guest Host, Brian Borcherdt from Holy F*ck: "I can request this one because I didn't produce it but a good friend of mine did..."

To be fair, I wouldn't really say we missed this one. When Brian Borcherdt offered up his collection of demos for free earlier this year, we happily hit the old "right-click, Save as" and waited impatiently for the goods to find a home on our hard drive. The thing is, by the time I could load the songs into iTunes, tons of bloggers had already cranked the hyperbole levels up to the gigawatts, professing the greatness of Brian and this collection of songs. It's not that I disagreed with the assessment - obviously, as [...]
