Elder's debut album which was officially released a few weeks back in The Button Factory was in fact recorded in 2007 and shows massive promise and potential which Elder has lived up to since the recording of the debut. The most significant aspect of 'Nobody Knows' is the quality of Elder's specific style of folk rock. This along with Elder's quality voice and his songwriting makes for a really good debut album which gets better after every listen! The best songs on the album are Heart to Strum, Diamonds and Nobody Knows. I also [...]

Aoife Moriarty released her debut album early this year called Dolls and Jigsaws. It's an interesting album of well crafted piano based pop songs that is growing on me with every listen. I seen Aoife supporting Brian Canavan in January and I'm really looking forward to catching Aoife's performance at the Live Mic Weekend where she is supporting Mark Dignam and Andrew Handrick. It's getting very close to the LiveMicWeekend in Co. Wicklow. All the details can be found here: http://www.livemicgigs.com/ .... artists playing include Mark Geary, Elder Roach, Brian Canavan and this week's Ruby Tuesday artist Andrew Handrick. According to his MySpace: "Born in Dublin, Ireland, currently based between Bray, Co Wicklow and Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy. Andrew is a self taught musician who writes edgy folk/rock music with deep, literate lyrics." From what I've heard of Andrew Handrick I think the songs are well written with good vocals. I'm looking forward to [...]

Any fan of music blogs will notice that for the next few days it will seem like St. Patrick threw up all over the musical blogsphere. And that's great! I don't want to be adding to mix of Pogues and Dubliners mp3s just yet. This Friday feature is about bringing quality Irish Music on the net to your attention in order to set in motion that weekend feeling! This week it's the turn of the excellent Bill Coleman who is almost ready to release his second album. The debut from 2007 'I'll Tear My Own Walls Down' is one of the best Irish albums made in recent years. Bill is a great songwriter and storyteller who deserves your attention. On his website he has a number of sample tunes available which includes a new tune 'I Want You To Know'. [...]

We decided during the week that on Saturday we are going to check out Brian Canavan with support from Aoife Moriarty Upstairs in Whelans this Saturday. I knew about Brian from his Carol Vorderman tune and video which is becoming a mini hit on YouTube. I'm getting a great vibe from his tunes on MySpace. On some songs he reminds me of Pony Club while on others he sings alot like Brian from A Lazarus Soul. And with Aoife in support I think it will be a cracking gig. It's only €7 in! [...]
What I have learned this year in the Music Game!
While I do a lot of regurgitating of music business information on here I still have a different perspective on the business because I'm not associated with the financial side of things. I'm not in this game to make money. I don't need to forge alliances with anybody. I don't review albums I don't like. If an album is poor I simply won't listen to it let alone write about it. So as an outsider on the fringes looking into an industry I have come up a few opinions! Here are a few steps I'd take to get [...]

The Wednesday Review
In the space of five days I got to see four of Ireland's finest artists in Whelans. Here for what it's worth is my take on the gigs! Friday 3rd April - One Day International with support from The Hedge Schools The Hedge Schools were Pat Barrett assisted by his mate, the legendary Joe Chester who produced last year's album 'Never Leave Anywhere'. I'm a massive fan of this album. Perfect escapism in the car. Performed live the tunes seem even more poignant and mesmerising. Their sound reminded me of old mid week gigs in pre-renovation [...]

My Top 50 Best Irish Artist List
Nialler has encouraged us all to make a list to help promote the best Irish music out there at the moment. For an hour yesterday and another hour or two this morning I thought about all the Irish artists I like at this moment in time. It's not an easy thing to do a list because I know I'm leaving out far too many good bands. However I'm happy to publish this list today as it defines what this blog is about and let's ya know what I think is great music in Ireland at this moment [...]
Music News Round-up
Firstly if you can get to Whelans early on Wednesday to catch blog favourites Heritage Centre supporting the brilliant Alphastates. Should be a great night. Blog tip for the top act Aortal are no more. Talented singer James O'Toole has decided to put his musical career on hold to become a full time socialist and activist. All the best to James but this to me sums up what is wrong with the whole internet/facespace/twatter thing! Sometimes too much information is given! Before the net, James could have privately decided to put career on hold, [...]
