Sudbury, Ontario singer-songwriter Brian Dunn's second album, TVs and Radios is a smoky, intoxicant fueled tribute to long drives and the wee hours. The record reflects Dunn's fixation with living life on the fringes - road life, after-hours- when the bar's closed and you've lost the motel keys... Yet, the album belies that beyond hitting rock bottom, there can still be hope. “She came over from Arkansas with miles of hate, in a barred-wired Shadow, broken interstate.” [via Killbeat] WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | [...]

Listening to TVs and Radios , the newest release from Brian Dunn is like listening to transmissions from deep inside the man. Or maybe it's like having a few beers with a new co-worker. You're going to learn some things. Some things you'll be impressed by. Others will be a little disturbing. But rest assured, you'll never look at that guy the same way again. Of course, none of this changes the fact that TVs and Radios is one [...]
Brian Dunn sounds like should be a country singer: He's got the manly drawl and an Americana style, but he lacks twang and cornpone. And I'm grateful for that. In fact, if you asked him, he'd probably call himself a folksinger. Good stuff. Check him out. Brian Dunn's 2010 release Examining The Fallout was a true diamond in the rough; a record that appeared on my desk with no explanation and no expectations, then proceeded to quietly blow my doors wide. Given that, you can imagine my excitement when its follow up, TVs and Radios , magically appeared today in the post. Lot more about Dunn (November Allstars, Ox) and TVs and Radios in the coming weeks; I've only had the opportunity to spin the record [...]

Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: HEROHILL TIMELINES:: Brian Dunn TVs and Radios In the attempt to come up with original content in this ever increasingly overwhelming world of musical curation and critique, we are launching a new feature on herohill today. Based heavily on the Facebook's latest feature that made millions of people threaten to quit the internet, we have started working with artist's to give a visual representation of a recording. Herohill delivers a tribute album of 'Hall and Oates' songs covered by Canadian artists.

Anything but, their self given band name, this 40 year old funk band is still managing to cause a stir with supporters around and proving that they are more than just a sum of their parts. Longevity and band member replacements aside, Average White Band’s rhythms and songs still stand the adversity of time, and for an original Scottish band to come out from that part of the world and then to acclaim critical notoriety worldwide, then all of the band members featured in its ever-evolving history, each played a seminal part in shaping AWB’s legacy. [...]

This year we wanted to do something special for the readers. Instead of asking for remixes, new songs or interviews full of badly phrased questions we thought to ourselves, "Selves, what's one thing we love?" Obviously, something involving the Steelers or Bayern Munich wasn't really an option, but our unashamed love of Hall & Oates was one we thought we could leverage. End result, we asked bands to record Hall & Oates covers, hoping anyone would say yes. In the end, we did ok... we got about 11 songs in time for today's launch, but we also have [...]

So here it is. The LPs list. For anyone that might be reading herohill for the first time, the list might look a little chaotic, but for the readers that have been around for a while, these 30 LPs are ones I've gushed about over and over again. I wasn't going to draw it out for three posts, but the time it took to add the MP3s and format the page was more than I had allotted last night... so sorry for the Biggest Loser type fake suspense. [...]

With the staggering amount of alt-country bands floating around in today's indie scene, it's hard not to question the honesty and sincerity of the tear-in-your-beer anthems getting penned. Every fan becomes a cynic when people start to channel their inner Townes, but when it comes to Ontario native Brian Dunn , the sadness that permeates his songs is so powerful and matter of fact, it's hard to separate the artist from the message. And to be honest, in the hands of a lesser artist that melancholic backbone could sink a record, like it [...]

So The Duke has gotta WAY behind with music in his inbox. Consider this a catch-up post. In order from oldest to newest…plus next week I’ll be previewing Musikfest. Mary Gauthier’s “The Foundling” came out May 18th. Mary is a “songwriter’s songwriter”. Meaning, the only people who seem to listen to her well crafted music are songwriters. It may be filed under Country , but one look at the Kozelek-esque cover art of Examining The Fallout makes it pretty clear that Brian Dunn won't be opening a chain of theme-bars or schilling for Chevy anytime in the near future. After six years fronting November Allstars and serving as a hired gun for MOKB-approved Ox , Dunn's first solo foray is a bleak and sometimes noisy journey upriver [...]
