Capitol Records to Release Beach Boys Version of SMiLE

Capitol Records to Release Beach Boys Version of SMiLE Capitol records has announced that they will release The Beach Boys' lost SMiLE album sometime in 2011. According to Billboard , "the project will be released in three versions: a two-CD set, an iTunes LP digital album and a limited-edition boxed set containing four CDs, two vinyl LPs, two vinyl singles and a 60-page hardbound book written by Beach Boys historian Domenic Priore." (No bonus points for guessing which one I plan to buy.) Of course the SMiLE album was never actually completed, and to what extent it was close [...]

Beach Boys' original Smile LP to finally be released!

Back in 2004, Beach Boys principal songwriter Brian Wilson closed the door on a very troubling part of his life. That would be his long gestating project, SMiLE . Surprising music fans everywhere, Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, and Darian Sahanaja fleshed out the necessary holes, completing what many rock enthusiasts consider to be a legendary record. Now, some seven years later, Wilson plans to open that door again with what Capitol Records is titling, The Smile Sessions . Due for release later this year, Capitol plans on using the original recording [...]

Brian Wilson schedules New Jersey Show, reimagines Disney songs

Way back in November, we told you that legendary The Beach Boys singer Brian Wilson would be going on his first-ever Canadian tour before crossing the Pacific for some UK dates. We also questioned why he wasn't showing any love for us stateside fans. Well, smile, everyone, because it turns out Mr. Wilson does love us. Or he loves New Jersey, anyway - at least someone does. Before he heads up north, Wilson will play a one-off gig in Montclair, NJ at the Wellmont Theatre. As of now, that's it for U.S. [...]

Brian Wilson to perform 'Reimagines Gershwin'. Playing Wellmont.

Brian Wilson to perform 'Reimagines Gershwin'. Playing Wellmont. Brian Wilson has announced that he'll be heading out on tour come this June. It won't be his usual tour playing Beach Boys hits, even though he will play some of those.

Brian Wilson performing 'Gershwin' in its entirety on tour (and Beach Boys songs too)

Brian Wilson performing 'Gershwin' in its entirety on tour (and Beach Boys songs too) Brian Wilson released Brain Wilson Reimagines Gershwin last year, an LP that put his own spin on classics by the American composers. Now comes word that Wilson will take those revamped classics on the road and play the album in its entirety "as well as classics from the Beach Boys back-catalogue." He'll be doing that all across Canada in June and in Europe in September, but first he'll kick things off on June 9th at Wellmont Theater in NJ. Tickets for [...]

Art: "Gimpressionism" Hides Gimps in the Wild

Art: "Gimpressionism" Hides Gimps in the Wild Where's Gimpo? That's no ordinary gimp hidden in the trees like so much Sasquatch. That's SF Giants relief pitcher and fear-the-bearded Brian Wilson 's gimp, The Machine . But these curious pieces aren't all about him. "It's a panoply of sadomasochistic fellows" says the creator, SF Copywriter cum Gimpressionist, Chris Elzinga . Take this piece, Birch Please . At first pass this 243 x 483 is just a tame, [...]

2/19: The Ronettes – Be my Baby (1963)

One of the best Phil Spector Wall of Sound recordings. I once read that Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys was literally obsessed with this one.

"In My Room": A Creative Game-Changer for the Beach Boys

The under-appreciated song showcases the Beach Boys' burgeoning creativity and musical sophistication.

New Music from Idiot Glee

New Music from Idiot Glee A lot is always said about creativity amongst singer-songwriters, and recent hits like Jens Lekman (or I guess you could say James Blake) use the layering of textures to craft amazing tracks. James Friley does much the same thing under the name Idiot Glee , except my itnerest in his tunes comes from his influences musically, such as Scott Walker or Brian Wilson ...you know, real pop geniuses. He'll be making his way to SXSW this year, and you can look for a full-length at some point in the summer. For now, [...]

New Music – Bird Names 'Metabolism: Salute To The Energy Of The Sun'

Phelan LaVelle & David Lineal are the avant fringe pop duo that have beautifully come together to form Bird Names, out of Kayne West owned Chicago, via Athens, Georgia. Their new album titled Metabolism: A Salute to the Energy of the Sun is as quirky as it sounds. Brilliant experimental songs full of lo-fi recorded instrumentals [...]

Week in Review (2/5)

This week's wrap-up includes news on The White Stripes, new tracks by Fleet Foxes and The Kills, a look back at Black Mountain, and a refresher on the genius that is Brian Wilson. Jay takes most of the feature again, with Mike covering the "song of the week".

[Flashback] – Red House Painters – "Old Ramon"

[Flashback] – Red House Painters – "Old Ramon" One of the fundamental goals of running a music blog is to introduce people to new music. The primary method of doing this is to highlight new releases, either via up and coming bands that show potential or tried-and-true musical mainstays that generally please the masses. Lost in this growing blogging race are the building blocks that got us to where we are, the albums that sounded like the hot new thing before the hot new thing was even a thing. So, in an effort to spotlight some artists or albums that might not have hit Hype Machine lately, Listen [...]

Lightspeed Champion – Bye Bye EP

Lightspeed Champion – Bye Bye EP What do I think of Lightspeed Champions' new EP? Well, it's not what I expected considering the last song of his that I heard was about puking into another girl's mouth ('Marlene'). But then I guess when you're taking a bit of musical direction from former Beach Boys' producer Van Dyke Parks, you can't really expect everything to stay the same. Upon first listening of the four-tracked release entitled Bye Bye though, I sort of wished that Brian Wilson and Dev Hynes had never met. Or at least, that they had perfected 'Til I Die' [...]

Video of the Week (Double Shot): Beach Boys

Video of the Week (Double Shot): Beach Boys Here are a couple videos from the Beach Boys, early 1970s style. Both seem appropriate for now because the Boys are apparently freezin' their asses off in each video. The first is the ecologically conscious "Don't Go Near The Water" from 19712s Surf's Up . This lineup of the Beach Boys features, of course, Blondie Chaplin on guitar and vocals (far left when you can see the full band) and Ricky Fataar on drums. The hairiest members are Mike Love (who looks like he'd much rather be someplace else), Carl Wilson (nice hat!) and Al Jardine. Dennis [...]

God Only Cuomos

Here's Rivers Cuomo performing The Beach Boys song, 'God Only Knows'. Pretty damn good for a sellout hack.

Rivers Cuomo Gets Earnest for "God Only Knows"

The Weezer frontman puts aside the larfs for some Pinkerton-esq emotional honesty.
