Music makes me happy. 2011 made me very happy - SO MUCH good music. Here are ten, not necessarily in order, albums I loved this year. I'm still doing it in reverse order though, because it's my list, and I want to. 10. American Nomad - Apache Relay American Nomad sounds like a warm summer afternoon. It's all happy jangly guitars, nice harmonies, and underpinned by a drive to get on the road and get lost. It's constantly listenable and I love it. They sit [...]

Brian Wright - House on Fire There are two kinds of albums that generally make their way into this space... ones that grab my attention immediately and ones that catch my ear slowly, over time and repeated listens. Brian Wright's House on Fire falls into the latter category. Even once I realized I liked his layered and complex mash of grainy Americana blues, I still wasn't quite sure what to do with it. Is WDVX ready for a song like the [...]
After a slow start for 2011 compared to the deluge of excellent records that fell upon Lonesome, Onry and Mean at the beginning of 2010, we've received some fine albums in March. Lucinda Williams,... Continue reading "Lonesome Onry and Mean: Brian Wright's House on Fire" >

Until today I've successfully ignored all the emails about Brian Wright's new record on New West. And I'd like to make it clear I haven't succumbed to the pressure. The fact is I met a Houstonite at SXSW who was a big fan of Brian's and thought he was going to be the next big thing ("big thing" in relative terms - say Justin Townes Earle or Hayes Carll). On first listen the record the record is more eclectic than you might expect. There are odd bits of conversation, unusual vocals, [...]

BRIAN WRIGHT | HOUSE ON FIRE SUGARHILL Texan Brian Wright’s rootsy folk has found a home with Sugar Hill, and his first label release House on Fire is a great listen. With arrangements that call to mind touches of The Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, and Wilco, Wright (who plays almost all of the instruments on these tracks) brings to life rich renditions of Americana rock, folk and even soul. Notable tracks include “Live Again”, “Mean [...]
Top Tuesday touts: ► The Australian songstress who goes by Washington — already a platinum-selling breakthrough artist in her native country — visits the Bootleg Theater behind her U.S. debut, an EP titled "How to Tame Lions." Young Hunting and Annie Stela support. That's Washington's video for the EP's title track, above. ► Norwegian electro duo Royksopp visits the Wiltern, with Jon Hopkins opening. ► Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark does the second of its sold-out shows at the Music Box. ► [...]

SXSW Pepper Rabbit Pepper Rabbit's set at The Orchard's party on Friday morning was a bit of an odd one - the group's normally lush and orchestral sound was stripped down as Xander Singh played solo in in front of a small group of us at Bar 96. Xander admitted, "It's a little weird to hear my music like this." Weird, maybe, but still a lovely way to start off the day, and hearing the tracks performed that way was a [...]
Brian Wright is no stranger to the L.A. music scene as he and his backing band, the Waco Tragedies, have also gained a loyal following across the nation. However, hometown fans will see Wright boldly stepping into the spotlight all on his own as he gets ready to release his solo debut, "House on Fire." Whereas he and the Waco Tragedies recorded the two previous albums within a span of three days to capture the band's true energy, Wright has been able to take the time and fulfill his dream of playing every instrument on a new record. Old [...]
I've been posting on Brian Wright again and again, I got sent this video of this delicious duet of the song 'Live Again' on his upcoming album Houses on Fire which is out next week. I've got a copy of his album to give away and thought I'd put together a giveaway for this album. The album 'House on Fire' is a fantastic Americana / Singer Songwriter album with some really fantastic Americana songs that you've got to hear... (see Accordion and the video for Striking Matches ) So leave a comment or [...]

Bill Whitten of Grand Mal You know the drill by now. Here's a ton of music that most other sites would put up one-post-at-a-time, but you get it in one simple post. So many artists featured I would take more time to read them than scroll through them. Videos are below the track postings. The Dodos - "Don't Stop" Man/Miracle - "Don't Waste It" Agnes Obel - "Brother Sparrow" Ghost Animal - "Young And [...]
Brian Wright - Striking Matches from Sugar Hill Records on Vimeo . I posted the fantastic track ' Accordion ' off of Brian Wright's upcoming album House on Fire, back in September. The video above is the in-studio recording of opening track, Striking Matches. The album will be released March 29th. After hearing two tracks from this album, I eagerly await hearing it in full; this is some exciting, awesome sounding music. http://brianwrightmusic.com/
By the time most artists reach their third album, the goal is usually to make the sound bigger and more elaborately produced, particularly when opting to sign to a national label. But for Brian Wright, the opposite has turned out to be true. Newly aligned wi th respected Americana and bluegrass label Sugar Hill, the Waco, TX-bred, L.A.-based roots troubadour has instead delivered a self-made album of boldly imagined, starkly personal intent: House On Fire , due March 29th. His band for the first two albums, lovingly named The Waco Tragedies, may be resurrected for touring [...]
Accordion LA based artist, Brian Wright ( www.brianwrightmusic.com ), will be headlining three weeks of shows in NYC, Philadelphia and here in Boston in support of his new album ‘House on Fire’. On his most recent album, House on Fire, he wrote, produced, and played every instrument on the album. Not only is he a fine songwriter, but took complete control of his artistic destiny on this album, and it comes across as a beautiful, honest, and thrilling piece of art; filled with blues sounds, and some harrowing songwriting. [...]
Jimmy Gnecco, one of my favorite singer/songwriter (and the best pipes in the business next to Thom Yorke, Sigur Ros's Jónsi Birgisson and of course the late, great Jeff Buckley) who I feel never got the fame and recognition he so richly deserves, will be releasing his first solo album this Summer on Bright Antenna Records. You might know his [...]

Singer-Songwriters are everywhere. Everyone has, at somepoint in their life dreamt of being able to pick up a guitar, strum away and pull that girl or guy with an amazing song, or leading thousands of people in a singalong. Very few actually manage to make a career out of it. Even fewer are actually good, all round musicians and entertainers. Tom McRae is one of this rare and dying species, and I caught him last night at Bristol’s O2 Academy. I’ve caught Tom a few times before, having been enchanted by him [...]

Website Third gig of February saw me back in Manchester for the rescheduled Tom McRae gig originally planned for September 2009. Despite the change in dates Brian Wright remained the tour support. This was my first time seeing Brian in action having missed the Hotel Cafe tour which he participated in with Tom back in 2008. It was nice to see the support act for once given a decent slot of 45 minutes to demonstrate their ability to the audience. Too often these days [...]
