Ramona Falls and SF locals Social Studies dazzled the crowd at Brick & Mortar Wednesday night.

Photos by Charlie Homo I've had the distinct pleasure of catching Social Studies two years in a row at Noise Pop : I saw them open for Wye Oak last year , and I caught them again Wednesday night with Ramona Falls . While this review isn't quite a "What a difference a year makes!" piece, because the band was excellent on both nights, the evolution of the band has been pretty exciting to watch. But before [...]

Our friend Dave Tobias has been pretty active in the live concert scene out west of late, here is his latest review. Surfer Blood played a sold out show Monday night at Brick and Mortar, a part of a short West Coast tour designed to road test their new material and band. Since releasing their catchy debut Astro Coast back in 2010, the world of Surfer Blood has changed dramatically. They’ve swapped band members in and out, with enigmatic front man John Paul Pitts being the mainstay—the creative, driving force behind [...]

With his two fellow VOWS members now living in L.A., Luke Sweeney was forced to take matters into his own hands, and I mean that pretty literally – Sweeney recorded a solo album, the just-released Ether Ore , playing almost all of the instruments himself. Give it a listen: Ether Ore by Luke Sweeney Sweeney put together a band called Wet Dreams Dry Magic and played a string of shows throughout the fall, including a November residency [...]

East Bay quartet Bells will perform a single release show with Yesway and Zakiya Harris at Brick and Mortar on January 10th. Bells has an unique local-meets-exotic sound combining elements of Afro-soul, heavy percussion, and experimental indie pop. East Bay Express said the band "draws from Oakland's tradition of jazz and blues, speeds it up with Afropop beats, and breaks the flow with odd tempos and quick changes." They will be releasing a new single "Video Star", the first release [...]

It promises to be a seriously psych-rockin' good time. Plus, my man Al Lover will be DJing between sets, so you know shit will be gettin' trippy, with no let up. And we want to send you and a [...]

Oakland's Kacey Johansing will release her newest LP Grand Ghosts at a performance at Brick and Mortar September 28th. This forthcoming effort was recorded a bit differently than her previous release. "On my last album Many Seasons , I was doing so much learning, really exploring what it meant to be a recording artist and a band leader," explains Johansing. "I was collaborating with many people back then and would pull in different musicians for different songs depending on who was around or what the feeling of the song was." [...]

A couple years ago, Austin rock band White Denim did a run-of-the-mill interview with CW Bay Area in which they discussed standard topics like their current tour and preferred recording process. Within the 4 minute video was a segment talking about the group's collective love for vinyl. "There was a period of time where we were only interested in releasing vinyl," says bassist Steven Terebecki rather innocently. "Just because it was more of an artifact and...more special." Now, some may groan at the perceived cliched weight this statement could carry. After one [...]
