I read earlier that today is the 50th anniversary of the release of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and I thought it might be appropriate to make mention of that before I go shower. Psycho is now, of course, considered a classic, but I was surprised to learn that it opened to not-so-great reviews: "There is not an abundance of subtlety or the lately familiar Hitchcock bent toward significant and colorful scenery in this obviously low-budget job," Bosley Crowther wrote in a June 17, 1960, New York Times review . Like now, [...]

Guest 7-Inch Corner! Woo-hoo! For this column, our friend Matt Farro of Bright Light Fever talks about D-beat legends His Hero Is Gone and their "The Dead Of Night In Eight Movements" 7-inch, released by Prank Records in 1996. Onward my friends. Band: His Hero Is Gone Title: The Dead of Night in Eight Movements By Matt Farro There used to be a record store in Sacramento, CA called Hindenburg Records and that's where I first got this 7-inch. It was like walking into someone's house, and [...]

I've always been interested with the idea of being able to provide free stuff to our readers, but have unfortunately never been lucky enough to have the chance to. That being said, I'm kinda excited typing this out as I feel more than privaledged to be able to run this contest/giveaway here on the blog. It'll be fun and who doesn't like receiving FREE stuff?! Exactly. The good people at Stolen Transmission have been kind enough to provide a nice little [...]

I'm back from the great state of UTAH. An eventful trip to say the least, but it was fun. I drove through the night from Las Vegas so I could make it back to work on time. I feel like a humming bird, my eyes are still buggy and hardly working, and my head is swimming from way too much confusion - but in all other respects I'm doing just dandy. Fatigue is good in such situations. It allows you to recover and move on - which most people don't seem to grasp fully in their lifespan. [...]

"I'll take this on myself to be with you." It's becoming too commonplace- loud, abrasive, rapid rock and roll. Can Bright Light Fever really distiguish themselves? It looks that way. Though rough and tumble indie rock may be the band's specialty, a display of versatility and a periodic softening of sentiments keeps the band on top of their less-able counterparts. As a new addition to new label Stolen Transmission , BLF has a bright, no pun intended, future ahead [...]
Well, first of all, Thank You for sending me the CD's. It was very nice of you. I was a little disappointed that you didn't send the oohlas cd as you promised. But no worries, I'm going to buy it anyway because I've been hearing the first two songs (and Small Parts) twice a day on my Rhapsody player. Those first two songs have been right at the top of my morning playlist (along with Ramblin'

Sherwood Update Sherwood will be going into the studio this Nov/Dec in San Francisco with producer Lou Giordano (Taking Back Sunday, Goo Goo Dolls, The Ataris) to record their 2nd LP . --- Bands To Check Out From Stolen Transmission A little about the record label: Stolen Transmission, built on a community of music thirsty kids, combines the back-end resources of "major label" and the DIY ethics [...]
(The first few drafts of this post were really stupid, and I was embarrassed to have written them, so in the interest of preserving some of my dignity, here's basically what I was trying to say before ill-advised humour, parody, and all-around bad writing reared it's ugly head) Bright Light Fever Presents The Evening Owl is a blues-rock album, whose first track, "Broken Hands" starts off sounding like something you may have heard before. It's not bad, just a bit predictable, leading you to believe that the rest of the album will [...]
