It was Drake 's Birthday this week (HBD DLL!) and though the record companies came bearing gifts of new releases, apparently all he really wanted this year was TV On The Radio . Instead he got a luke warm Blitzer Trapper , an irritating Jenny Lewis , and an irrelevant David Byrne and Brian Eno . -ed. Drake's Take: New Release 09.23.08 My birthday week has historically been kind with great new releases, and this year it's certainly the case. TV [...]

Motion To Rejoin ( Matador ) is Brightblack Morning Light's follow up album to their amazing debut a few years ago. It was recorded entirely with solar power in rural New Mexico and features vintage keyboards, traditional Native American instrumentation, slide guitars, horns, and a plethora of percussion. This is a slow rolling foot hills type of album that drags low like morning fog and mixes blues, jazz, gospel, and chanting all together for a perfect blend of calm. Do you want to relax for a bit? Then check it. Photo by Andy Macleod Photography [...]

My birthday week has historically been kind with great new releases, and this year it's certainly the case. TV on the Radio is the release of the week (year!), but I poached it for last week's post. But there' still plenty of releases to focus on, including a poach or two from next week's releases. New releases this week include albums from Jenny Lewis , Blitzen Trapper , Brightblack Morning Light , Mogwai , Cold War Kids , All Girl Summer Fun Band , KatJonBand , Kings [...]

This month seems to just improve significantly from week to week in terms of new releases, as once again we're overwhelmed with some great albums. Many of which come from some well known names including TV on the Radio's latest, Dear Science ; Jenny Lewis' second solo effort, Acid Tongue ; Mogwai's The Hawk is Howling , and Blitzen Trapper's Furr . There are also a couple of albums from some lesser known bands that have piqued my interest after hearing a couple of songs [...]

in brightblack morning light 's "oppressions each", every sigh is heard as the song waltzes in its own time, drenched in reverb as if played in an empty hall where even the dust on the wall trembles along. it's a soulful, spiritualized piece that mourns and aches with an air of heaviness that weighs down on even the lightest shoulders. production wise, the sound is musky and archaic, but in its content, the message is universal. i haven't heard the rest of the motion to rejoin album that "oppressions each" is taken from, but judging from this [...]

Okkervil River The Stand Ins Jagjaguwar Okkervil River's The Stand Ins is the stylistic, lyrical, and thematic sequel to their 2007 release, The Stage Names. The art work for the album was designed to fit below The Stage Names. Many of the songs came from the same sessions of The Stage Names, and when you consider three of the songs on The Stand Ins are short instrumental numbers, that leaves only eight new tracks. So, what exactly makes The Stand Ins its own album and not The Stage Names Appendix? Ah, that's [...]

Brightblack Morning Light are on the cover of the newest FADER magazine and the pictures of the band's off the grid life in New Mexico are a-fucking-mazing. I didn't get a chance to read the article so I'm not exactly sure where in New Mexico they are, but let's get a stick, a bandana, a good pair of army boots, and start walking. From Death Comes For The Archbishop : At sunrise next morning Father Vallaint [...]
TV on the Radio's Dear Science has been getting a lot of buzz so if you're "hip" and "with it" you should probably get on that. Genghis Tron is putting out some remixes, Danielson Famile is reissuing some vinyl and if for some reason you need a physical copy of the Girl Talk album that did the pay-your-price thing a while back, that's out too. And (this makes me cringe) the first few Christmas albums are starting to pop up. It's September , people. [...]

So I finally, finally saw No Country For Old Men this weekend ( I know, right?! ) and thought it was a near flawless film. As I've mentioned before, Cormac McCarthy has been one of my favorite authors from the first time I read All The Pretty Horses in high school. I've been mesmerized by his austere, profound, unadorned writing ever since. The Coen Brothers did something extremely rare by accurately capturing the mood and tone of the book [...]
A partial list, anyway. I forgot to do this last week. Shame on me. Shiny popsters All Girl Summer Fun Band finally follow up 2003's 2 with one called Looking Into It . The laid-back, jammy sounds of Brightblack Morning Light return on their third record, Motion to Rejoin . Low-fi pop dude Owen Ashworth, aka Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is putting out a mostly instrumental soundtrack entitled Town Topic . Badass strutters Cold War Kids come back for a second round on [...]
For the California based duo Brightblack Morning Light , no better name could suit. On the group's third effort, Motion to Rejoin , each song unfolds to reveal dark and powerful notes that coexist with bright pleasant tones in perfect harmony. If Talk Talk and Spiritualized collaborated on a cover of a Black Keys song, arranged by Miles Davis during the Bitches Brew sessions with the help from Can, it would sound something like this. That being said, listening to Motion to Rejoin is like staring up at [...]

There’s a saying in Japanese – “atama ga piiman” – which translates roughly to “my head is like a pepper.” It used to be slang for something like “I’m baked.” I always loved the explanation for the saying, which related to the hollow dried-out insides of a pepper, with the little seeds kind of shriveled and bundled in the center, clinging to themselves by that pale stringy flesh; it evokes an image of a puckered and used-up brain. My head has been like a pepper for a while. Not in the baked sense, but in the desiccated [...]

The less I know about Brightblack Morning Light the better. I once read an Arthur Magazine profile that painted them as the 21st Century equivalent of those zonked out, commune hippies in Easy Rider, who planted crops in the middle of a desert and entertained themselves with acid and horrific mime programming. After all, Brightblack Morning Light is really just Rachel Hughes and Nathaniel Shineywater (of the East Egg Shineywater's) two freak folk types who nicknamed themselves Rabob and Nabob after presumably picking the names at random from Tobin's spirit guide. The music is [...]
Their new album "Motion To Rejoin" arrives verrrrry soon: 9/23/08! =*HM*

All the news that's fit to print. ::: I feel like a citizen dick. I just wrote a column six... nay, five days ago, railing against latter Pink Floyd albums and said that Rick Wright sounds like a Death Eater from Harry Potter. Well, unfortunately, Rick Wright has passed away at 65 . Way to be a toolbox, self. A pox on Kenny Bloggins. ::: Brightblack Morning Light 's new album is exactly like their last one. Fine with me. I like jams about nature [...]
