So, you thought that because the summer had ended there wasn't any more large-scale live music on? Well think again. Well, medium scale, at any rate. Dr Martins, the shoe makers, have been putting on some shows in their stores recently. If you've been to one of the shows in Liverpool, Cardiff or Leeds then lucky you. If not, I'm afraid you missed three pretty good bands. However, if you're London-based you've got a couple more chances to see some of their choice bands. The Spitalfields store is hosting Wild Mercury Sound on Thursday and then you can catch Rolo [...]

When we were little, turf was a major part of our year's cycle. We lived in an estate house in Kells, but unlike most of our neighbours who used oil or coal, we used turf to keep the house warm. Thankfully, this never singled us out for a slagging, because the most bet-down families from Kells apparently used coal. What it did single us out as, however, was one of those odd families who travel to the 'bog'. Our father bought a patch in Mullagh bog, neat, rectangular, ideal for producing turf. It had a ditch [...]
As summer continues to (slowly) flow in, so do fortunately music festivals ! Here is a fun and friendly festival that is worth having a look at ! Leefest is taking place on the beautiful rural location of Higham Hills Farms, Bromley, South East London and is happening on the 12-14th August. Marked by the [...]

Not of course, given the business I work in, like I can't fill it up to the brim again in a second of course. I mean, there's the Rob St. John and Ian Humberstone as well as the All Creatures Will Make Merry vinyl artwork to finalise of course. But that can, realistically, wait until Monday. I think. So that leaves me with tomorrow and nothing to do but hang out with Mrs. Toad. The house has been so hectic with guests, and with the Festival August might well be worse, that at least one day to spend [...]

2010's winners The xx Each and every year I look through the Mercury Prize list and tally it up with the list I have in my head. Sometimes the list is good and includes virtually everything that I too considered to be the best of that period. Other times, and particularly in recent years, the list seems to consist of two groups the year's big financial hitters and some seemingly willful curve balls. This year's list falls between the two stalls. There's a lot on the list that seems to be dictated by [...]
A small introduction: Sziget is an annual 7 days music festival that is one of the biggest in Europe with about 400.000 visitors. It takes place on a island in the beautiful city of Budapest in the second week of August. Sziget draws all sorts of people together through their desire to create, or enjoy [...]

Yesterday we posted Part One of Paul Brown's Latitude Diary. It only seems right that Part Two should follow... Bah-titude (Photo by Jodie Brown) Saturday After a scorching hot Friday, it's no major surprise that it starts pissing down on Saturday. A bit of rain shouldn't really throw a pair of North-East residents off-kilter, but we still spend the morning drifting around trying [...]

Festival Season makes us a little bit insatiable here at Muso's Guide. We've already had Natalie Shaw's review of the festival, but we were so excited about T in the Park, we sent two writers. Here's Steve McGillivray's perspective on the festivities... [...]

A strange one, this. Classified, I suppose, as a one-day festival, Live from Jodrell Bank (or, to give it its other name, Transmission_001) is a shiny new annual event - or that's the plan, at least - to showcase some of the world's best bands under the shadow of the Lovell telescope, the world's third largest radio telescope. For the first ever Transmission, the organisers pulled out all the stops - some terrific acts were on display, both new and old, all universally in awe of the immense dish above them, and all perfectly fitting (be it coincidentally or purposefully) [...]

We at MFM are massive fans of British Sea Power , and rank Valhalla Dancehall among our top albums of the year, but when ' Georgie Ray ' was announced as the third single, we couldn't have expected a brand-spanking-new version of the song to be recorded. The band evidently thought it needed sprucing up, and it's definitely paid off. Its anthemic qualities have been beefed up even more, and now that the mix is busier, it's been injected with somewhat of a kick, which is impressive for a [...]

British Sea Power have announced details of their next single. The band will release " Georgie Ray! " as the latest single off their new album ' Valhalla Dancehall '. The single will be a "fresh mix" of the original album version and will be released digitally on July 25. Stream the single below.

Welcome to the British summer festival season. We'll be bringing a number of reviews of festivals over the next few months, focussing not just on the music, but all the other stuff that makes the event life-changing or soul-destroying or everything in between. We start with our review of Get Loaded in the Park which happened yesterday. As you can see from the picture above it wasn't the brightest of affairs weather wise. Tickets [...]

While it's fun to hate on Pitchfork , the truth is that most of the time they get it right. There is that rare occasion though, when they'll put up a review that I find to be way off the mark. The most recent example being the review one of my favorite albums of the year, Patrick Wolf's Lupercailia . The reviewer's argument seems to be solely focused on an admittedly pompous quote from Wolf himself and the overly-kitschy lyrics. There's even an admission that "if you strip away the unctuous lyrical [...]
