Hi guys, just a quick explanation about that cryptic post from Saturday. I decided that since Emily and I were out and about, I'd take the opportunity to do a review in the car. I wrote it out in my Moleskine and then scanned in the review, which is what you all got to read. That will probably happen again, I like how it turned out, however un-Google-able it might be. Anyway, I'm finally back in Columbus and therefore here's the mp3 of "Heavenly Waters" by British Sea Power, enjoy! "Heavenly [...]

REISSUED ALBUM: British Sea Power Open Season (Rough Trade - 2005) Aggettivi superlativi si sprecarono all'uscita del secondo disco targato British Sea Power. La tesi: una maggior coesione rispetto all'esordio "The Decline of British Sea Power", renderebbe "Open Season" migliore del suo predecessore. Come potrei essere meno d'accordo? Ok, probabilmente è vero, "Open Season" presenta una

Four years ago, I was standing on the edge of something bigger than I had ever seen before - college. 128 hour credits, countless late night dance parties, one alcohol violation, and two majors later, I'm once again on the edge of something I've never seen - the real world. These past four years have been some of the most intense and influential years of my life. Yet, amidst the all night study sessions, the insufferable early morning classes, and those awful hangovers, there's been one thing absolutely constant in my life: my passion for music. I've [...]

British Sea Power is a fucking dynamite band from Brighton. You probably have no idea who they are, as most people don't, but they truly are a diamond in the rough. They released a great debut album to minimal critical acclaim in 2003, and made a bit of a name for themselves for their quirky and fun live shows. But they kinda got lost in the shuffle when the seemingly endless supply of new Brit-pop bands broke onto the scene that same year. They were one of the few bands that were focussing on making great records, and not [...]
Mr Toad is a little tipsy and Mr Toad is off on the lash. I am going to the Tron, which is a really crap pub in the centre of Edinburgh owned by the utterly abysmal 'Scream' chain. I am going for a good reason however, and that is to see The Red Well and Viva Stereo and a couple of other groups I don't know called Come in Tokyo , who aren't from Tokyo, and Starless & Bible Black who are from Manchester. When I am in a [...]
Tonight is a battle Royale...literally. The two bands, while sharing a similar sound and aesthetic, have quite distinct personalities and come out with quite a different feel. The Young Knives are a three-piece from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, England (by way of Oxford), with a raw energy and snark that is nearly unparalleled. British Sea Power hail from Brighton , and have a bit more of an earthy undertone to their sound. Both bands have a deckle edge sound that runs rough and deliberate. I've been listening to and been pretty enamored with [...]

If you haven't seen Al Gore's much publiscised film on the effects that global warming is having on the planet, do so at the soonest possible opportunity. As a self-confessed bunny hugger, I was really pleased to see some headline attention given to what must be regarded as one of the gravest known threats to life as it exists today. Regardless of your environmental standpoint, however, the film offers a concise and digestible summary of the scale of the problem as well as some suitably arresting examples of the damage to date. Gore is forthright in his [...]

Over the past couple weeks, I've been going back to British Sea Power's 2005 release, "Open Season". I'd bought it around Christmas that year, and had consistently enjoyed over the next several months. But it got lost in the crowd of my 900 some albums, and as I came back to it, I was more than thrilled to have it coarsing through my ears yet again. More than anything else on the album, I first fell in love with the lyrics. To be even more specific, I fell in love [...]

(photo by Jeev ) On occasion I have the responsibility, nay, the privilege of venturing out from my safe North London bubble from where springs my work, my play, my habitude, and at times I am required to work on the borders of the City of London, the infamous Square Mile home to as many overweight market traders as can be fit in. It's the East border, which means I work within spitting distance of the lovely Brick Lane , an entire street of curry houses and Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi shops. Awesome Welles, basically, especially [...]

Who doesn't love Antarctica? I mean, it's a continent, but it's uninhabited. It's on a pole. They've got penguins. It's home to the Antarctic Treaty System , the first arms control treaty of the Cold War, which required that it be left free of military incursions, to remain a home for scientific exploration and inquiry. And then there's the fantastic " Scott of the Antarctic " sketch by Monty Python. I mean, seriously. Movies of Antarctica - Stars of Track and Field I like movies. [...]

The Smashing Pumpkins are currently in the studio working on a new album with producer Roy Thomas Baker, who most recently produced The Darkness. Something tells me that SP is going to turn into one of those bands who aim for a commercial hit with no depth whatsoever. Well, anything is better than Billy Corgan trying to be Depeche Mode. // Interpol signed with Capitol, which I don't think will impact their music significantly. Matador was no small fish in the pond either. // The Shins album is delayed until 2007, as they were saying they [...]

Follow-up to Mini–mix : Sleep from á la discothèque Without wanting to steal some of the thunder from Jim's excellent Sleep Mini-Mix , it inspired me to create my own, longer version. Whereas Jim made an excellent job of mixing the tracks together seamlessly, I'm rubbish at that kind of thing so [...]
...looking foward to the Fort Rox pseudo-festival at Newhaven Fort next Saturday. Have actually bought my ticket now! Seeing British Sea Power, Duke Spirit and the Research in this old World War 2 lookout fort on the edge of the sea has got to be great. The sun should be shining, and there couldn't be a better venue for BSP... More info http://www.britishseapower.co. uk/FortRox.pdf and listen
On my way to work this morning I put my iPod on shuffle and listened to each song it gave me, no skipping. Here's the mix my iPod came up with during my commute this morning with a bit of commentary...also, I've got a bit of a short walk to work, thus the "mini" nature of the mix. 1. "Here On Earth" by Love And Rockets - Love And Rockets is rather underrated, maybe that's because they never shied away from dating their sound with sweet woodwind solos [...]
