Photo taken by the amazing garmonique - Flickr I'll be honest with you, this collection of songs was compiled with nothing but mixed emotions and by that I mean, I wasn't able to put my finger on any real understanding of what Winter should feel like. Happy or sad? The undertones of what is otherwise pleasing to look at in nature often strikes differently in the depths of the mind where everything tends to get lost. Although I guess that's just it for me, using music as an instrument to bridge [...]

Fans of English rockers/instrument enthusiasts British Sea Power who just happen to have the rotten luck of being Americans can quit the self-hatred For the first time since 2008, with new album Valhalla Dancehall in tow, the sextet will grace the shores of America for a full-length tour. The fun begins in Brooklyn on March 22nd and will then see the band hit most of North American's major metropolitan hubs before looping back east for a date in Philadelphia on 4/20. As for what us Yankees can expect, guitarist Martin Noble told [...]

Simoneau Guillaume I first made the acquaintance of Iowa native and Montreal resident Laurel Sprengelmeyer's stage persona Little Scream almost exactly two years ago , when she opened up for Land Of Talk at The Horseshoe. At the time, she had no web presence whatsoever - not a website, not a Myspace, nothing - but her solo electrified acoustic performance made enough of an impression to stick with me. Enough so that I made sure to see her again a couple months later during Canadian Musicfest and while [...]

Smith Westerns - Weekend Last we heard of these boys they wanted you to be my girl . Well, not MY girl of course. They don't even know me (nor do I know the girl), so why would they/I even want that!? It just doesn't make any sense. At least TRY and pay attention, ok? Anyway, one can only imagine they since got said girl, only to break up in a crash of recrimination, anger and uhm, hang on, wait a sec... na na na na na a girl [...]

For your pleasure, more MP-free.. Scottish post-rockers Mogwai are laying an early claim to Album Cover and Album Title of the Year with their soon-to-be-released seventh long player called Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will . Excellent sounds too. I like to play a little Mogwai while I'm working - hacking a bit of code and atmospheric instrumentals seem to go together. Somehow. British Sea Power are a bizarre band. They're incredibly idiosyncratic yet their music is pretty mainstream stuff for the most part. The lyrics are both clever and odd and their music has moved over the past decade from post-punky angularness to sweeping epics worthy of IMAX nature films. Despite all this they remain pretty under-appreciated, in my humble opinion. The band have just released their fourth full-length (I'm not counting the Man Of Aran soundtrack) called Valhalla Dancehall . While the record isn't really bringing anything too new to the BSP canon, I'm still [...]

After some deliberation about whether to continue this feature or not, The Weekly Graboid has once again returned to kick off another year. This feature has been a staple of this blog since the beginning, and even though it's a bit time-consuming every once in a while, it still serves as a major way of discovering a lot of the new music that comes out every week that I'm not able to cover on an individual basis. With that out of the way, let's see what this week's releases have to offer. Outside of a couple [...]

Toronto - I freakin love British Sea Power . I think their show at the Horseshoe in November of 2003 was easily the first Toronto show I went to that blew my mind and cemented the fact that I made the right decision of leaving the ice palace known as Edmonton. Their 2008 album Do You Like Rock Music was my favorite album of 2008. I've seen them every time they've been in town so yes you can imagine my excitement when it was announced they will be touring North America in late March in promotion of [...]

Three years and four days from the day that I declared Do You Like Rock Music? as "the first great rock album of 20083 (see here ) I'm about to repeat myself. And why shouldn't I? British Sea Power have repeated themselves, producing a follow-up to their Mercury Prize nominated third album that's not so far off the mark from its predecessor. Valhalla Dancehall buffs, shines and refines all the markings that made British Sea Power standouts in 2008 and applies them to another stellar set of songs that [...]

I've really been slacking on posting new release previews, but there's no time like the present to get back on track. There aren't a ton of exciting releases this week, but I am excited to hear Cake's new LP Showroom of Compassion . I've always enjoyed Cake for their hilarious lyrics and incredible musicianship. I recently previewed a single from Tapes 'n Tapes' new album Outside and I'm hoping the album stands up [...]

Facebook How do you like your British Sea Power ? Abrasive and anarchic as on their debut The Decline Of British Sea Power ? Slick and anthemic as on the follow-up Open Season ? Or are you loathe to choose between the two and prefer the middle ground that album number three - Do You Like Rock Music? - treads upon? If you raised your hand for option c), then the Brighton-based Brits' fourth effort [...]
