Most of you are already aware, but if not, today is the last day that the original Red River location of Emo's will be open. While there is the shiny new Emo's open on Riverside, it's just not the same, and never will be. The end of an era, that brings many of us a bit of sadness. When I first heard of the pending closure, I didn't really think about it much. Maybe it was my built in defense mechanism developed from mourning the loss of another landmark venue in which I spent countless hours in musical [...]

Eyes closed, head slightly bowed, hands clasped, Bob Mould stood silently for better than a minute at the conclusion of Monday night's tribute concert at Disney Hall, letting the crowd's warm ovation wash over him. The 51-year-old singer, guitarist and author had to be thinking something along the lines of: What a long, strange trip it's been. Punk hero in the 1980s. Radio guitar god in the 1990s. Closeted gay man for most of both. Respected solo artist. Dabbler in electronica. Scriptwriter for professional wrestling (fer chrissakes) after that. And now, enjoying a career [...]
Photo by Timothy Norris for LA WeeklyThough he reportedly expressed some humble resistance to the tribute because "he's not even dead yet," Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman Bob Mould took part
If Hüsker Dü or Sugar were before your time, do yourself a favor and dig up their old catalogs. Both venerable bands were fronted by Bob Mould, and an all-star assortment of music luminaries assembled to celebrate the music and legacy of Mould's vast catalog at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Britt Daniel, Ryan Adams, Dave Grohl, No Age, Grant Lee Phillips, Margaret Cho, Craig Finn and Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady all paid tribute by running through classic Hüsker Dü and Sugar songs. Mould is touring in support of his book See A Little Light: The Trail of Rage [...]

Leslie Feist is an amazing Canadian talent. Beautiful, sultry, talented and cool. I dig this chick hard. Here are some remixes of a few of her gems as well as an original. How Come You Never Go There - Feist - Clock Opera Remix - London based dj's/producers Clock Opera do a great job with this track. Feist's sultry voice comes in and catapults this song into smokey lounge BANGER. I Feel It All - Feist - Britt Daniel Remix - Britt [...]

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars At this point in time, there probably aren't too many people familiar with the Portland outfit, Light for Fire . Honestly, that's probably the biggest tragedy we'll come across, as their self-titled debut is chocked full of brilliant pop moments, fusing moments of great indie-pop with arrangements created by a singer-songwriter format. It's just flat out golden. You're going to struggle to find as good a one-two punch as the opening tracks on Light for Fire [...]

Two great artists combine for an awesome remix of one of my fave songs: Feist - "I Feel it All" (Feat. Britt Daniel) — Basil

As far as charity records go, there may be none more sonically giving than Live From Nowhere Near You: Vol. 2 . Organized to benefit Outside In , a Portland, OR-based non-profit that offers aid and counseling to homeless youth, the compilation features rare and unreleased tracks from Elliot Smith, Eddie Vedder, Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, The Strokes, Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, and a slew of other artists (check out the gargantuan tracklist below). Now, before everyone lays down their $15 for the three-disc collection, which you can do so here , the [...]

At first glance, Britt Daniel's name may not ring a bell. But I bet the band he sings for does, so I'll give you a hint: it's something you eat soup with. That's right, he's the front-man of Spoon! Back in early 2008 he released this gem of a [...]

The Heavenly States' excellent new EP, Oui Camera Oui , received a bit of a boost when Spoon frontman Britt Daniel agreed to contribute vocals to the track "Berlin Wall." Daniel, a champion of the Bay area band, previously had the Heavenly States open for Spoon during a three-night stint at the Fillmore and proclaimed their 2010 LP Delayer one of his favorite records of the year. After the jump, check out Kristoffer West Johnson's animated video for "Berlin Wall"—which stars an egg-shaped Humpty Dumpty-looking character with Daniel's voice. You can also nab the [...]
Hippies Are Dead Records have announced the release of "Oui Camera Oui," the brand new EP from the Bay Area's The Heavenly States . Recorded and produced with Bill Lefler in Los Angeles, CA, in the fall of 2009 and mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady, Kurt Vile), Oui Camera Oui shows the EP short form can pack a powerful punch, and it whets the appetite for the band's next EP installments which will include sister songs, prequels, epilogues and other forms to create connections across several releases. "Oui Camera Oui" features memorable guest [...]

Video: Heavenly States (Ft. Spoon's Britt Daniel) - "Berlin Wall" Spoon frontman Britt Daniel has been raving about The Heavenly States' LP Delayer for years, featuring the Oakland, California outfit's 2008 effort on his best-of list that year and inviting the band to open for Spoon on a string of tour dates. Following one of their shared bills in San Francisco, singer Ted Nesseth invited Daniel to appear on the band's next release, what would become their Oui Camera Oui EP, which was released this week. Daniel agreed, and now [...]
Fantastic new video from one of the most underrated bands around. Really hoping they start getting the attention they deserve. This video should help. "Berlin Wall" is from the band's brand new EP, Oui Camera Oui , which you need to pick up right now .

Music Videos: Idiot Glee – "Let's Get Down Together" - A Cluster 1 Premier! Some trippy kaleidoscope imagery complete with dark overtones….your computer's music visualizer can suck it. British Sea Power – "Who's in Control" ( For No One ) - Daniel Ryan's incredibly rare and intimate video series continues. If you recall, Ryan takes some of the industry's most popular indie acts and has them play in a live setting of no one. It's raw, it's visceral, it's on Cluster 1. Alcoholic Faith Mission [...]

Britt Daniel Video: 'Berlin Wall' Highlight: "We love what Minneapolis artist Kristoffer West Johnson did with 'Berlin Wall,'" the Heavenly States' Genevieve Gagon tells Spinner. "We've worked with him before and he's a real mind-reader, an amazing artist. The Humpty Dumpty character as sung by Britt Daniel of Spoon has this schoolhouse rock quality that turns the song into an ominous lesson. Kris really got it right [...]
