Luna is one of those bands I don't remember discovering—rather, it just seems like I've always been listening to them. A few days ago I stumbled upon a copy of frontman Dean Wareham's memoir Black Postcards —which I had no idea even existed—and quickly became absorbed in the details of the cult figure's musical evolution: from his Glen Campbell-dominated New Zealand youth to discovery of New Wave, first shot at forming a band while attending Harvard, the rise and fall of Galaxie 500, an amazing 7-album-run with Luna, and plenty of personal turmoil and triumphs, including his love affair [...]

Dreampop has always been defined by its lush atmosphere. But though we've come a long way since the mopey guitar-driven sounds of Galaxie 500 filled my adolescent ears, the sparser side of the genre has crept onto these pages several times, most recently through the delicate soundscapes of This Mortal Coil , and the post-millennial work of Dean and Britta , helmed by Luna founder and one-time Galaxie 500 guitarist Dean Wareham. Today, we start the long weekend with an irresistibly mellow cover from Athens-based dream-slash-orchestral pop quintet Venice Is Sinking [...]

Some would call this moon-themed post lazy, and those people would be right! I've been suffering from some serious writer's block lately (many of you might point out that I seem to suffer from writer's block most all the time, based on what passes for writing 'round these parts), and what better way to fill space with minimal effort than a theme post. Stick up a few mp3s with 'moon' in the title, briefly mention a moon-related event, then sit back and watch the hits pour in! Of course, that's not entirely fair. The 40th anniversary of the [...]

Monday: ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead @ Santo's Party House 10pm $tba This show was announced last week and is a pretty big deal for folks that know anything about Trail of Dead. Is there really any better way to kick off your week than

Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham - I Deserve It So, this is good news; The now out of print debut album by Luna's Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham , L'Avventura, is set to be reissued this September. I wasn't aware of this, but apparently Jetset Records (former home of Luna , Mogwai , Arab Strap , Death By Chocolate , The Go-Betweens and plenty more) hasn't been functioning for some time. That's really a shame. When I was Music Director at WRFL in [...]

MP3 : Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste by Galaxie 500 MP3 : Bobby Peru by Luna MP3 : Indian Summer by Dean and Britta I just finished reading Dean Wareham 's memoir, Black Postcards . Highly recommended. Dean gives an honest look at his life, from childhood to Galaxie 500 and then onward to Luna. Dean certainly didn't hold back on any punches. It paints a career that when it was high, it was okay, and when it was low, it could only go [...]
Liz Phair reviews Dean Wareham's memoir, Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance, for the New York Times. Apparently, the frontman of Galaxie 500 and Luna "portrays himself as a surprisingly unsympathetic character." Frontman: One of the things "Black Postcards"...

Dean and Britta are playing the High Noon Saloon on Monday, March 19th. You may know that Dean and Britta once played in Luna , a band I was infatuated with and adored for about two strong years before their unfortunate dismantle. All is not lost however, as Dean and Britta emerge next month with Back Numbers , and 11-track offering full of lush, fuzzed out, and gorgeous music guaranteed to make your heart swoon. We've been playing our promo copy to death; look [...]

Monday: The Shins @ Virgin Megastore Union Square 12am FREE* The Shins have often been criticized for putting on a poor live performance and this has kept me from seeing them in the past, but I realize now that I will never know for sure unless I see the band on my own. Tonight affords and excellent opportunity to do just this as the band will be doing a free in-store performance. Of course as the asterik suggest it isn't really free you have to buy Wincing the Night Away [...]
