Here are some pictures and some videos I took at the We Listen For You day show. Surprise guests arrived. It was fun. There was a giant vending machine. I had free Taco Bell. About six months ago I started thinking about how to throw a unique SXSW showcase that would squarely place all attention on the music and give adventurous music fans an experience unlike any other. In order to accomplish this, I decided several guidelines would have to be in place. First, to fend off the buzz related nature of the festival that none of the bands/artists would be announced. This gives the unknown bands we champion and the acts that have a huge following the same value. Secondly, no signage or sponsors would be allowed, to act as [...]
Wednesday: James Leg (of the Black Diamond Heavies) with Warren Byrom @ The Green Lantern (9:30pm, 21+) Deranged rock played in a town that's welcoming to it. Listen to the song "Fire and Brimstone" here. Thursday: Wet Hair with Psychedelic Horseshit, and Three Legged Race @ Al's Bar (10pm, $5, 18+) Another superb WRFL sponsored show. Drone, dirt and electronic dissonance. [...]

Scott Kirkpatrick, or Bro. Stephen , has recently released Baptist Girls , one of our favorite albums of the year. One listen and you will be hooked. I practically melted into my couch in relaxation and introspection. Kirkpatrick has an uncanny ability to turn simplicity into unique arrangements that keep your mind racing. Listen to 'Tears on Tape' below and you will see what all the fuss is about. He will be at RYE on Market on March 11th. I can think of nothing better than a fine bourbon to pair with this album. [...]
Download: Bro. Stephen / Tears on Tape Ähnliche Beiträge: Stephen Malkmus, was machst Du da? [...]
I'm hugely remiss for not posting about Bro Stephen long ago. But his great new album Baptist Girls is in stores now. MP3: Bro. Stephen - Tears on Tape As the world continues to freak out over Bon Iver, I continue to not really get what all the fuss is about. If you're looking for [...]
Bro. Stephen is the name that (Stephen) Scott Kirkpatrick records under and (lucky for all of us) he's just released a new album called Baptist Girls which is fucking brilliant, if you like that sort of thing. It was recorded primarily in a converted chicken coop in rural Indiana but you'll find no clucking or crowing here. Really, it's a testament to the strength of Baptist Girls that it is just as good a record for late nights and headphones as it is for a sunny morning buoyed by cups of coffee. [...]

January and myself didn't get along very well. Anything that could go wrong did. This probably had a large influence on my listening habits as I spent a lot of time listening to songs that I can take comfort in. Of course my top two, Sharon Van Etten and Damien Jurado, had new albums that weren't available to me until late this month but I fell hard for both of them when I finally did get to hear them. You can pre-order both albums and get the [...]

I have been giving this album some serious spinning for the last month or so and it is indeed a seriously great listen. The album officially saw its release on Jan. 24th (this past Tuesday) over on Crossroads of America . The album is available on all your favourites; space age digital, retro CD and exclusive vinyl - of which I recommend the latter...but more on that below. First off, let us get one thing straight, this album is a creeper. This album, while seemingly an innocent folksy little [...]

Back in June we ran a piece on Bro Stephen where we pointed out his unique talent as a singer/songwriter who could visualize the many landscapes of America through sound, something Bro Stephen knows well as a constant traveler on his many nationwide tours. His music seems to sprout up from the earth and have this natural power that is the cornerstone of great folk music. Bro Stephen is set to release his new full length LP in 2012 and is giving us a preview in the [...]

Brought to you from the good folks at Crossroads of America - Bro. Stephen is a relatively 'new' discovery for me. Bro. Stephen (Stephen Scott Kirkpatrick) has a brand new 73 that found its way to me way up in the great white north of Canada, and I am very glad it did. This limited to 300 vinyl offering brings 3 tracks including the title track "Patrons of the Arts" and two b-sides "The Truth" and "Previous Things". If you are reading this about Bro. Stephen and are not here by mistake, you will know that he is [...]

Bro. Stephen is a traveler. A musical Jack Kerouac, moving from town to town across America, letting the experiences and landscapes sink into his being, eventually allowing them to flow out in the form of his gentle, yet powerful music. A musician like Bro. Stephen is hard to find these days and when you do it's rarely on a music blog, rather a coffee house in the shadows of a small town or at a house party where only friends sing every line to his songs. He has the talent of any buzz band or big name [...]

Our Brother is coming back to town! Not really our brother, but he may as well be and we welcome him as if he was. Brother Stephen brings his soothing songs back to town along with IamIs and Dane Waters (of Softcheque and Sapat). This will all go down at the Blackbox in Nulu. Which, if we aren't mistaken, is where an awesome vinyl shindig was a few weeks ago. A cool little place with some great Louisville native artists, should be some good times. [...]

Bro. Stephen and John Davey are playing a free show in Louisville on Nov. 17th at Derby City Espresso. Bring a friend. Bring your mom. Bring your mom's friend (you know, the one who spends the night every weekend). Anyway, it'll be a nice time drink coffee and beer and coffeebeers and water. And tea. Bro. Stephen is a collection of songs written by Scott Kirkpatrick. At times they are sung in hushed tones, alone, and untethered; other times [...]
![[Local Anesthesia] Shipping News and Brother Stephen](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2957790_lg.jpg)
The past couple of months has seen some incredible music coming out of the Derby City. Here are two artists that maintain some serious spin in our rotation, the legendary Shipping News, and the sophisticated vintage folk of Brother Stephen... It's damn near impossible to discuss Louisville music these days without talking about Jason Noble, crucial member of post-rock legends Rodan and Rachel's. It's also difficult not to discuss Jason's struggle with cancer the past few years. However, Jason's fight provides an extra sense of urgency and triumph [...]

afternoon, fellow denizens of the interwebs. if you happen to be in new orleans this fine evening i highly recommend heading on over to the neutral ground coffee house for my man brother stephen , and a host of others. he's got a 73 and a record coming out on crossroads of america records , and the record which is called baptist girls features the vocal and violin talents of cheyenne mize of bonnie prince billy fame. if you're a fan of bon iver, will oldham and other folky-esque artists, brother stephen will be right up [...]

Our good friend, Bro. Stephen has had a few hand-made releases, but now in collaboration with Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records and their Laminar Excursion Monthly , he has a new record to share with us. Here's the skinny: The record was record completely live with an all-star band in one afternoon at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN. There are 4 songs clocking in at exactly 20 minutes (the format is a 33 CD). These songs may be a bit different than [...]
