Celebrating (roughly) four-and-one-half years of Sunday Mix Tapes. I'm back from India. I'm trying to pretend I'm not jet-lagged but after sleeping five hours on the plane I came home from the airport (at 7am) and slept until noon. Then I woke up and ran 20 miles (which sucked!). Then I went out drinking. I [...]
Happy end of the week, kids! I want to finish this entry as quickly as possible so I can get a full night of sleep. Or…close to a full night of sleep. I was up at 6am to run yesterday (Saturday) and didn't get to sleep until 4am this morning. Not bad considering it was [...]
Not at all exciting for you Swan Fungus news, everyone! A Swan Fungus "Evan's Face" t-shirt has found its way around the world to New Zealand. Pictures pending. Something about that seems cooler to me than Kathy Griffin wearing my face on her chest. As cool as the series of photos from Japan sent by [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] Rafael Anton Irisarri puts together a playlist for us of Broadcast's Trish Keenan , very devastating news for all music lovers. "Last week I was extremely saddened by Trish Keenan's tragic, untimely death. She was a brilliant, talented artist and her music became a huge inspiration to me. I love the sound of her voice, it was absolutely fantastic. The first time I heard Broadcast , I thought everytime her parts would come in, it was the work of an angel. [...]
A new week is beginning. I think it's going to be a good one. I think . I haven't quite figured out why yet, but for at least one of you reading this, it will be a good week. I should try my hand at horoscopes. Hey Aries, you're going to shit your pants this week. Pisces, you will find yourself drunk at least once. Uh oh, Leo…you have cancer. Poor Leo. You were always so innocent and free. You were always so…cancer free. Hey, look, I made a rhyme. There, that should suffice as an introductory [...]

When my friend passed along his copy of Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age (2009), he slipped in the caveat that this weird-science psychedelic music seems "more difficult" than usual. Then again, a lot of what Broadcast have recorded throughout their career would not be mistaken for being easy listening by any means; this album, the result of a recent collaboration with experimental musician Julian House (aka The Focus Group ), only serves to further confirm Trish Keenan and James Cargill's mastery of their medium. There is a very [...]

Out of all the ways you can discover music, Shazaming something in Victoria Secret is probably near the bottom of the list. And if that sentence has just discredited the whole idea of this post, and maybe even my entire blog, I would completely understand. But I checked them out when I got home from the mall :( and really liked what I heard . They have this old school 60-esque vibe that is really great. The UK based band has been around since 1997, but the stuff that really caught my ear was their newest collaboration with [...]

This is no chance collaboration . Sixties era library music is sampled and comes to life again but tainted by feel good psychedelia.

The medieval chroniclers Ralph, Abbot of Coggeshall, and William of Newburg, tell us the events played out during the chaotic reign of King Stephen (ad 1135-54) at harvest time. Local peasants working the fields of Woolpit, near Bury St. Edmunds Suffolk were interrupted by the distinct cries of children. Wolves stalked the area, so the villagers rushed off in the direction of the sound. Upon investigation two young children, a boy and a girl were found in the deep ditches excavated to trap the wolves, (known as wolf pits, hence the name of the village). Their [...]

For my apologies / frame of mind when making the list - check the mentions post : Some notes : Hate to sound like a white suburban teenager, but the hazy lo-fi sounds of Matt Mondanile & friends has been the soundtrack to this year. Beware! too much of this will make you think that you live in a two storey prefab with American siding, have a bunch of lazy teenagers in trucker caps as friends and make love to sleazy girls at the beach. Which is quite the contrary to what [...]
And here we go. You know the deal by this point in the week, I'm counting down my Top 100 Albums of 2009 and tomorrow will be the final unveil of the Top 20 releases. If you missed any of the earlier posts, then here you go: #100 to #81 , #80 to #61 and #60 to #41 . Any guesses to my Top 20? [...]

"In anticipation of their own full-length album due next year, Broadcast are back with a new collaborative mini-album Broadcast & The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age " -Warp This video is absolutely gorgeous.

In Dennis Potter's classic mini-series The Singing Detective , characters frequently, and without warning, burst into song, channeling the sounds of the past in order to put an optimistic (and often ironic) gloss on a dark present. As with Potter, the playful, sometimes eerie sound collages of British groups Broadcast, the Focus Group , Moon Wiring Club and Belbury Poly conjure up an alternate reality—an eccentric, occasionally unsettling combination of cold war dread and boundless optimism. Belbury Poly's Jim Jupp (also co-owner, with House, of record [...]

Happy Halloween folks, but don't forget Samhainophobia: Your fear of Halloween can result in the following symptoms: breathlessness, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly, a fear of dying, becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or a full blown anxiety attack. I encountered a problem while recording this week's show-there seemed to be voices leaking into the recording. It's strange, because we don't live anywhere near radio towers, which is usually the cause of that kind of interference. What's also disconcerting, is that I'm not sure if I was hearing the voices coming from my headphones, or from somewhere else in the room. I'm OK with recording equipment, but definitely not an expert. I'm going to look over my setup again, and make sure nothing's changed since last time I did my show. Anyhow, I hope the interference isn't [...]

Broadcast , have been around since 1995, having formed in Birmingham, Great Britain. Broadcast are signed to Warp Records; a record label, that acts as a who's who of each important name in electronic music since the labels formation in 1989. Warp have hosted, amongst others, Andrew Weatherall (under Sabres of Paradise guise), Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Nightmares on Wax, !!!, and Richie Hawtin. Broadcast have come together with Julian House, a.k.a. The Focus Group . His influence of English folklore, and eerie vintage sound complements Broadcast perfectly, and their partnership here could not be better placed. [...]
