It's tradition for You Aint No Picasso to play yearly host to some wonderful mixes. Each one over the next 12 days is made by one of my favorite bands around some theme of their choosing. MP3: Oh No! Oh My! - Walk In The Park The first is from Daniel of ...
Broadcast - "Unchanging Window / Chord Simple" [Buy] The Dexateens - "Fingertips" This song is slippery, suspicious, hazardous. The timing slips in and out of the beat just enough to wake you up, to make you reach for the guitar. So you lurch forward and your breath comes out like a harmonica, and then you gasp that c-chord gasp as you watch that last drum, that flat bangy bastard, beat all the other instruments to death. [Buy from Amazon UK] Karen O - "track 1" Some home recordings by Karen O were found in an apartment formerly owned by the [...]

Wow. I'm not quite sure why we have such a fascination with big, round numbers, but the idea of "one hundred posts" is very exciting. I merely speculated about reaching this point when I started out, and after a bit of a ragged summer posting-wise, the future of the blog was definitely questionable. But the last few months have been really great, and that's as much a product of the amazing city that I'm living in as all the awesome people that have stopped by. Thanks in particular to Rodney of B(oot)log [...]

Broadcast always seem to bring their A-game to every album they produce. Whether you're a fan of their psychedelic electronic pop or not, it's hard to deny that everything from The Noise Made By People onwards is carefully conceived, edited and produced. More so than most bands these days, each Broadcast album is a unified entity, and while you can pick out individual songs as favourites, the whole is always more than the sum of its parts. Singer Trish Keenan mentioned in an interview that the recording process for each album is stressful enough that [...]

I realized that Fujiya and Miyagi were from not Japan when I heard the lyrics to the first song - " Like pixelated scraps of jazz mags in your head lights ". It turns out they are from Brighton. It doesn't matter.Their music is a delightful mix of bass and synth lead pop songs with some soft whispery vocals. The production reminds me a lot of Peter Bjorn and John's latest album for some reason, kind of warm and inviting (expect better). Their album Transparent Things gathers previously limited 103 vinyls together on one release. I highly [...]

The title's pretty self-explanatory, no? Sunset Rubdown - "We Got Broken Eyes (demo)" I think I got this originally from Said the Gramophone , and if so send them many thanks for further confirming the cruel talent of Spencer Krug. So prolific is the four band man that this epic track never made it past the demo cutting room floor. Here, we have the re-afirmation of synth tones as punk bludgeon, just like Suicide used to make. Ear punching perscussive crunch accompanies [...]
Here are some new tracks from releases on August 22nd, which was not a bad day for new music. mp3 Keep Us Together (Starsailor-On The Outside) mp3 In The Morning (Razorlight-S/T) mp3 Hello Traveler (Darker My Love-S/T) mp3 When The Night Turns Cold (Tobias Froberg-Somewhere In The City) mp3 We're Gonna Boogie (Primal Scream-Riot City Blues) mp3 Still Feels Like Tears (Broadcast-Future

Someone asked me last week what exactly is a Graboid. Well my friends, i wasn't exactly sure it was anything as I stole the word from a website I like to visit. I just assumed it was similar to the word 'grab' so it made sense at the time. Plus the feature needed a title and I can never come up with anything clever. With that being said, I looked up graboid in the ever reliable and addictive Wikipedia (random article is too much fun) and this is what came up. [...]

Wow... today was a great day for releases. Well, unless you're broke, then it's going to suck having to make a choice of what to buy. I've gone through the list of todays releases and picked out the ones that have been raising eyebrows. If I missed anything you've been loving, then tell me what I missed and why you love it. Broadcast - Future Crayon Illumination - mp3 [...]

The new Broadcast comp, The Future Crayon , is "a compendium of early EP tracks and B-sides, along with rare compilation tracks that plays through like a concise summary of their music to date." Buy from Bleep . Broadcast - Illumination
Tender Buttons was one of my favorite records of last year. Most likely capitalizing on increased sales based on that record's exposure (even though past albums are thought of as better) they are set to release Future Crayon . The record is a career-spanning collection of rarities, b-sides, and compilation appearances. Check out a sample of what you are going to find. Mp3: Broadcast - "Hammer without a Master" Buy it: Grab yourself that Future [...]

So I havn`t talked about the show Rockstar Supernova nearly enough...its also a little strange that I`m a fan of this show...concidering I didn`t watch any of the INXS episodes... so today I thought I`d go through the contestants and tell you what I like or dislike about them DILANA - Kinda scares me a little...don`t get me wrong, she`s an excellent performer...I think she can be a little too weird for me. [...]

My favorite field trips in elementary school were visits to the local zoo. I was always fascinated by how many different kinds of animals there were on this planet. So, for the next two days, we're going on a field trip to a zoo - an audio zoo. Beta Band - Dog Got a Bone Broadcast - Black Cat Money Mark - Insects are All Around Us Deerhoof - The Pickup Bear [...]

The aforementioned GOES CUBE show blew my head off it was so good. My chollo Dustin took some amazing photos of the show that capture the RAW POWAH -- I'll post a link when they're up. August is the most boring time of all in the industry I work in so I've had all kinds of free time to cyber-stalk friends & neighbors. Stumbling onto things I'm not sure that I want to see... but... cannot... look... away. I guess that's how it is in this age of photo blogs & [...]
So I hope everyone is or will be having a good Independence Day. I won't be doing much myself that I know of. We used to have a fireworks display, however funding and whatnot became a problem and now no one puts on here in my small hometown. The worst part about that is we neither have a fireworks display or nor can we even set off fireworks, legally at least. So really, it's almost like living in a town that doesn't acknowledge the holiday. Regardless, that won't stop me from enjoying some excellent [...]
I want to take the opportunity to mention some music over the next week or so which was released either before I started the blog or music I never got around to posting about in the first place. These are all highly recommended. First up, Broadcast. Released in September of last year, Broadcast really came into their own with the release of 'Tender Buttons' .The sound on this album is pared down with more cohesion and focus than previous releases making it Broadcast's most indie pop (and therefore accessible) album. Nearly every song has an underlying synth [...]
As a way of encouraging people to go and buy their new album Tender Buttons , Broadcast are going to be all ambient-dancey at a number of locations near you.
