The Danger Mouse - James Mercer collaboration Broken Bells released their debut single "The High Road" for free today, instantaneously making any other bit of Monday's news completely irrelevant. Even in death Brittany Murphy couldn't catch a break. Nice one, Columbia. [MP3] Broken Bells - The High Road This offering from Broken Bells is a bit more laid back than I would have guessed, sounding like a Mercer-fronted Gorillaz more than anything else. Still, it's great to have James Mercer working on something other [...]

As of right now, their website is just an image of the letters that make up "Broken Bells" being spewed out and spun around and around, but on next Monday they will be posting their first single from the album. It was only a matter of time before I mentioned The Shins. This multi-genre band from the land of enchantment (otherwise known as New Mexico) is, without a doubt, my favorite band. It was The Shins who first exposed me to the wonderful world of indie music with their folk pop and quirky jingles. This is a band that would have fit perfectly in the 1960s, and thrived. The band got one of its big breaks when two songs, New Slang and Caring is Creepy , [...]
The long-awaited sophomore effort from Brit soul/pop songstress Corinne Bailey Rae is now officially set for a February 2 street. Title: The Sea . More on CBR and the new album (plus interview, music snippet and video) on an earlier and newly updated DC post here . In what has to be one of the more fascinating collaborative efforts for the new year, James Mercer of the Shins and Gnarls Barkley 's Danger Mouse (AKA Brian Burton) have joined creative forces as The Broken Bells . [...]
There are a lot of reasons this should be bizarre news, but the more bizarre part is that maybe this is perfectly natural. The two had a particularly worthwhile collaboration on Mouse's Dark Night of the Soul track "Insane Lullaby", and apparently got along just famously (which we hear is the best way to get along). The duo already have a release planned for early 2010, and claim to have another projects in the works already to follow. Also, they might or might not be called Broken Bells. That is all for now. The duo are calling themselves Broken Bells and are set to release their debut album early next year. Danger Mouse , one half of Gnarls Barkley , and James Mercer , lead singer of The Shins , have decided to team up and make a new band together. The tentative name for the band is " Broken Bells" but they have said this name isn't for sure yet and may change in the future. They also said this isn't your typical group that will just have production by Danger Mouse and then nothing else really comes from it. They have plans to keep the band going well after their first album and they say [...]
There are few acts music bloggers like more than The Shins and Danger Mouse . So you can imagine the global ejaculation that has followed the announcement that the former's frontman James Mercer is teaming up with the latter (who, for his part, between Dark Night of the Soul , Gnarls Barkley and all of his other collaborations and solo work, seems to be all things to all people, in all places at all times). The supergroup (super-duo?) will tentatively be called Broken Bells , and we can expect [...]
Just when you thought we had reached the pinnacle of collaborations with news of Ian Brown and Johnny Marr's new venture , there's this: According to Pitchfork , Shins frontman James Mercer has teamed up with Brian Joseph Burton, aka Danger Mouse of Dark Night of the Soul and Gnarls Barkley fame, for a brand new project tentatively called Broken Bells .
