Chicago house icon Jesse Saunders , writer of the '80s house classic "On and On," continued to hold it down in 2011 from his home base of Las Vegas. This year saw him release his Old Skool New Skool 2 compilation — featuring tracks from Mark Mansion, Alessandro Otiz, Quentin Kane and others — as well as his own mobile app. Not bad, eh? We asked The Originator to give us some of his thoughts on 2011 and look ahead into the new year. How was 2011 for you? 2011 [...]

The biggest struggle when putting together this list is how to rank the albums. What exactly is the difference between a #1 and a #2 album? Without doubt, Viva Brother's "Darling Buds of May" was the song I listened to the most in 2011 and the album it comes from is pretty damn good. But is it my favorite album as a whole? The Damnwells have consistently put out great material and I'm sure I listened to No One Listens to the Band Anymore more, front to back, than any album on the list but did I do that because [...]

Okay, angry mob of the Toad readership, do your very worst. Today, as promised, is the day we vote on our five favourite songs of the year so there will be no foolish questions as per usual, but what there will be is the chance for you to write down your favourite songs, in no particular order, and I will count them up and find out which songs the readers of Toad have enjoyed the most this year. There aren't any real rules, although the song should have been released in 2011. And also, just to help me [...]

THIS WEEK IS THE MOTHERFUCKING SONG. BY TOAD CHRISTMAS PARTY! OH YES IT IS! And isn't that jolly exciting. You'd best all be very excited indeed or I will be most upset - I'm a sensitive soul after all! I've also just realised that although I ordered tickets, I forgot to take them down to Avalanche, because I am a fool, so I will do that today. And you can buy them online too remember. However, firstly, a spot of boasting, if that's okay. I know I just did this last week but a couple of [...]

Humour me this week. Sunderland is my team. My home town, my home team and now the whole family's team. It's a bit like parenting a teenager (she said bitterly): you love them regardless, would never desert them, hurt anyone who ever criticised them, but they don't half push you to the edge at times. Today, it looks like dreams really do come true. For the last decade at least, whenever we parted company with a manager, my dad would say to me: "So pet, who'd you like to manage your team?" I would always answer Martin O'Neill. [...]

Hoops have done Katy B a favour with this remix. They have added a dose of substance. Now at an RnB sway, offering re-worked synth parts that pulse throughout the chorus and percussive detail, transforming this middle-of-the-road pop song into a sensual groove with a personality. The production now matches the vibe of the melody and lyrics. Slick. > HOOPS DOWNLOAD | Katy B - Broken Record (HOOPS remix) Posted by Celebrity Sex Tape.

So, the 200th podcast. I remember a couple of years ago when the 100th ticked past, it happened to be a Toad Session, and as those are pre-recorded with little idea when they'll fit into the sequence of Toadcasts I never really marked the milestone in any sort of a way. This time around I was very much conscious of it, but still couldn't really think of a way to make it interesting and, on Thursday night, with no real plan, I just sat down to have a go at editing a compilation consisting of at least one [...]

Seeing as I am starting work at an ungodly hour this morning I'll spare you from my ramblings and just get on with introducing this weeks cover version. It comes from Edinburgh folk-rockers Broken Records and their take on Mercury Rev's classic Goddess On A Highway, enjoy... Broken Records-Goddess On A Highway (Mercury Rev cover)

Your girl Katy's got a new single. "Witches Brew" got a coveted spin during the front segment of Annie Mac's Radio 1 show tonight. While it's maybe not quite "On a Mission", "Witches Brew" is certainly shoulders above "Easy Please Me" or "Broken Record". That and we love British accent! Sing it Katy! In the liner notes for the first release of Pet Sounds on CD in 1990, Brian Wilson is quoted as saying that "you design the experience to be a record rather than just a song; it's the record people listen to." This statement is guaranteed to hit home with anyone who, like myself, views the album as the ultimate artifact of modern popular music. When Wilson uses the word 'record', we music-aficionados (or 'geeks', if our friends and family are to be believed) instinctively know what he means: we're not talking here about any mere document or recording [...]

Really feeling this remix by Jacques Greene of Katy B 's "Broken Record" - her voice over the deep funky garage beat - ooh! Katy B - "Broken Record" (Jacques Greene Remix)

Dammit, Edinburgh can be frustrating. Because we're coastal, warm weather tends to draw a chilling sea fog off the sea called the haar, which can fuck up the most promising of warm days. Yesterday, just as things were getting nice, the fucking haar came down, and it's still bloody well here. Anyhow, just a little reminder that next weekend (Saturday 30th April) we will be doing the lifeboats collection here in Stockbridge, and would hugely appreciate any volunteers who fancied helping us shake a tin for an hour or two. We make it worth your while, in that [...]
She's recently announced her biggest tour to date but it doesn't just stop there. Katy B has today released details of her next single. The track 'Easy Please Me' from her debut debut album 'On A Mission' will be the fourth release from the UK star. Her album peaked at number two last week on the UK album chart. The track follows her previous single 'Broken Record' and is produced by dubstep duo Magnetic Man. Listen to 'Easy Please Me' below.

Apparently you people like music and stuff, right - that's why you're here? Well this week I like gardening. Yes, as if to demonstrate that I am taking all these accusations of being too old and too middle-class extremely seriously, this week I am far more excited about the back garden that I am about music, sorry. We've had a lot of rain this spring, so inevitably when we get a sunny week, as we did last week, everything blooms. This, I have to confess, as someone relatively new to gardening, is incredibly exciting. Any teenagers [...]

Whereas most schools, rightly or wrongly, stream pupils into classes based on their test scores and academic ability, the Brit School in South London surely must do it in a way to make sure the grip on every facet of the charts is as tight as it can be. 'Jessie J, get to your 'How to hide extremely grating music with ridiculous clothes/Lady Gaga lesson, now!' 'Adele, Leona Lewis, those millions of records aren't going to sell themselves – concentrate on your big ballad work'. And with the onset of the Jamie Woons' and Katy Bs' of the world, we [...]

Does Carl Barat at the Liquid Rooms on Thursday qualify as an interesting gig for this page? I am not sure. A couple of years ago it might have. I saw Dirty Pretty Things at the Corn Exchange back in 200somethingsomething and, much like their album, found them to be highly enjoyable but always slightly short of earth-shattering. Somehow, not all that many years later, the gig seems almost completely irrelevant, both to me and, I imagine, to almost anyone reading this. No wonder musicians often end up with a love-hate relationship with their [...]
