We've been getting tons of submissions to the Off the Radar Mail Bag/email from bands/artists who wanna have their music exposed to our Blog and readers. To be honest most of them are not very good, but every once in awhile we get some stuff that's pretty darn good and deserves mentioning on here. Here's some of the better stuff we've gotten recently. The first track is from Local Miami Favorites Afrobeta ! I've known Cristy for awhile (great girl) and you've probably seen her in some commercials without even [...]

This week, 100b's inbox shared Broken Records with us. Broken Records are so new they don't have nothin' out yet, other than an EP sold at their shows, but they have been getting some attention around the music world. They've done live sessions for the BBC and were voted Best of the T Break Stage [...]

Reach for the sky and apply for the Escape from MySpace series. » Contact me! » Escape from MySpace Broken Records is a seven piece from Edinburgh who play string heavy songs. They are peddling a four track EP which gained them a bit of publicity and airplay in the UK. They have a session in May for BBC Radio 1. File under folk with [...]

Trying to keep up with all the new singles out there has been a little overwhelming recently, but it's good to hear some great new music coming out. Here are a bunch of them alongside some other albums that have been in our queue recently. Singles Batteries "Childproof" This is a jaunty little tune that has a nice swing to it and counteracted by a tinge of darkness just to keep it interesting. The crunchy guitar blends in nicely with the rythmic guitar [...]

the broken records , a seven-piece from edinburgh, scotland, have, with just a four song ep to their credit, stirred quite a following around the british isles.* and for good reason. their press material says they "create a sound combining traditional european folk with modern scottish alternative music." i would simply call them craftsmen. the songs they yield range from balladry with an edge, like "slow parade" (check out the delicious moment, about forty-five seconds in: "here come the drums - and the beat"), to more robust dervishes of folk rock like "a good reason," a song liable [...]
Like many other music blogs, we get a lot of emails from bands asking us to check them out. While, we do our best to keep up, there just isn't enough time in the day to write a piece about everyone. So instead of ignoring these often times great new bands, we figured it would [...]
It's getting to the point, where there are just too many talent, young bands in Europe these days and it's beginning to get quite hard to keep up. Fortunately for Scottish natives Broken Records, they shouldn't have too much trouble catching the ears of music critics. After just a small sample from their debut [...]

Here's a band that I've ignored for way too long. I've known about Broken Records ever since Matthew from Song, By Toad started writing enthusiastically about them last year, but only ever casually listened to them. My mistake. Last week I gave their tunes more of my time and now I'm convinced that they're easily one of the best unsigned bands in the country right now. Surprised then to see that no-one other than the venerable Drowned in Sound are tipping them for greatness this year. Maybe they're still too much under [...]

Broken Records - One Good Reason This song winds itself up as it begins, like it's getting ready to do some damage. The violins are being sharpened, the bows almost sound like they're hacking at the dry strings, getting ready for you, sawing away for when you have a good reason to get violent. This song is for when you want a barfight but there's no bar to be found. Also, it's got the most utterly fucking addictive violin line ever. You may have to use heroin to wean yourself off it. [...]

( More idlewild coming this way very soon i promise.. .) I am still about to post my review of idlewild in Edinburgh the other night, which was great, but life has been kinda insanely busy here (just for a change). Anyway, they had two fantastic support acts, so in anticipation of my review, a sampling of them both: The Twilight Sad and Broken Records. Some excellent mp3s Twilight Sad Twilight Sad -'Walking For Two Hours.' mp3 (via Yousendit) [...]

I'm not in an especially chatty mood, but I really had to point out that the darling Broken Records (previously mentioned here ) have recorded more music, and kindly decided to share it with us all via their MySpace page. There's a new version of 'Lies', and this song in particular is rather glorious: Broken Records - If The News Makes You Sad, Don't Watch It These tracks should form part of an EP for sale at gigs (or maybe online?) soon, but for now, grab as many tracks as [...]
Broken Records have three new tracks up on their MySpace page. All three are a little different, which I love, with A Good Reason being a chaotic, relentless clatter of a song driven forward by sawing violin work that reminds me a little bit of an odd combination of two early Men They Couldn't [...]

Broken Records are a seven-piece from Edinburgh, as far as I can gather, and though they have yet to release an album, or sign to a label, they're worth getting excited over. Toad mentions Beirut and Calexico, and wouldn't you know, he's not far off. 'Lies' is probably the closest to this sound, with rampaging mandolins, strings and accordions all blurring away together in a beautiful chorus, like insect's wings beating away. Marvellous! The song that really swayed me was 'Kathy'. It's a bit more straightforward to be sure, but it's lovely in the same way that Arcade [...]
Well, I mentioned these lads a little while back, and was sufficiently impressed with their set that I went to a largely empty PoNaNa on a Monday night just to hear them again. I really don't like clubs/pubs like PoNaNa very much at the best of times, much less on a drizzly Monday, [...]
Hopping - hopping! D'you get it, d'you ge.. oh alright alright, simmer down. It wasn't that bad. What else was I supposed to use for a flighty post with no real cohesion? Exactly, so pipe down in the cheap seats. Well I was all set to pop along to the GoodBooks gig at Cabaret Voltaire on [...]
