For those of you anxiously awaiting the arrival of Canada's favorite indie rock collective, wait no longer: tonight is the night that Broken Social Scene take the stage at Terminal 5. In the meantime, you can check out the band rehearsing for the gig above. For those of you who have yet to get tickets, don't fret too much. For one, tickets are still available . For another, the band will be webcasting the entire gig on YouTube starting at 9 PM EST. Yes, we think you should tune in and [...]

I accidentally hit the publish button before I even had the chance to write anything. Demar DeRozan was chosen with the 9th overall pick by the Toronto Raptors last night and I am very pleased by this decision. I've been pretty lucky this year in terms of my wish/dreamlist coming true - Guus Hiddink to Chelsea (even for that brief period of time) and now a player that I've been following for a few months now. I am happy with the acquisition of such a young and exciting player. And if he reaches his potential, he could be [...]

There's plenty of places to see. Happy to be rolling down the hill now. The door will be open. Meet me as soon as you can. Broken Social Scene - “New Country” Brendan Canning - “Antique Bull” & a little something different... Fever Ray - “Triangle Walks (Rex The Dog Remix)”

First of all, I've been suffering from tonsilitis the last few days so I've been quiet. The gradual release of decent-quality MP3's from Grizzly Bear's Veckitisawhatsitagain? continues, with "Cheerleader", previously heard live, making its way out onto the big wide Interwebz. The live version, as you would expect, was rough and lacking their expert use of the studio, but certainly sounded promising. Now, bizarrely, I got hold of this last week and thought it was fab. And thought I'd uploaded it here. But I hadn't. Doh! The word on the [...]

Photography by THEEOS300400D Happy Sunday! Been a busy weekend here in Tsuruland as we made the big move to Our (new) Society and I've been quite busy straightening out the bugs and killing off the kinks... Oh wait, strike that, reverse it . With the lags, the ads, and the impending doom, it was time for our own home, and she's all pretty, the smell of paint still whispering around in the air, come sign up and check it out. Anyway, with any [...]

2008 was a fine year for music. Now that it's over, it's time for ye olde annual top-ten favorite albums list. As in the past, however, I make no claims that any of these albums are "the best." They're just my favorites. That said, I have to say that I listened to things differently this year. I paid much more attention to albums as a whole. I think I expected more out of them. And so the top five picks were easy, much easier than in past years. The second five were not! [...]

The sky is going to rape us with snow. Broken Social Scene Presents: Brendan Canning - “Chameleon”

Land of Talk - "Some Are Lakes" The Tallest Man On Earth - "Honey Won't You Let Me In" Broken Social Scene - "Shampoo Suicide" Broken Social Scene Presents... Brendan Canning - "Been At It So Long" The Walkmen - "Passin' Through" Blonde Redhead - "23"
This is one of the last big weeks for shows this year, and the biggest show is Broken Social Scene Wednesday night at Variety Plahouse. Tickets were still available at the time of this post, but I would suspect this will sell out at any moment. Friday has a ton of great concerts, but I highly recommend catching Castanets at The Drunken Unicorn. And while I rarely mention Athens shows in my listings, the Danielson show at the 40 Watt eclipses anything else going on in this state Saturday night. Best [...]

I have here a minimix of Broken Social Scene . If you are seeing them tonight and you do not know these songs, there is probably something wrong with you. This is a little something to help you get psyched, that is unless you are a superfan in which case you certainly don't need my help. And if you are not a fan at all, perhaps you will give a listen and decide that you have misjudged these vistitors from the North. And if you are saying to yourself "Broken Social Who?"... scroll down right now and [...]
It's been that kind of week. All three of these shows are covered in this week's music section. Head on over there if you want more information. I have just about enough energy left to press 'publish' on this, nothing more. Have a good weekend, everyone. We'll have reviews of BSS, David Byrne, Lucinda Williams and Jackson Browne on Monday. -- AKZ JIMMIE DALE GILMORE Playing: Tonight, Friday, at Off Broadway MP3: Jimmie Dale Gilmore, "Tonight I'm Gonna Go Downtown" [...]

Brendan Canning (Toronto, Canada) I feel like this album and the Kevin Drew album from last year aren't really getting quite their due on the interwebs just because they are solo albums and not proper Broken Social Scene records. I have been listening to a whole bunch of BSS lately, and I think that I almost like this and Spirit If... better than their older stuff because their songwriting has become so much more [...]

I named this Wednesday Mixx ALL FALLS DOWN because a lot of incomprehensible events shunting my sanity right now. I swear, my optimism is on the minimal for the longest time. Before I divulge on some personal details, here's a playlist of the songs I uploaded that perked me up and kept me from my drama sessions. Enjoy. TO DOWNLOAD: Right Click, Save Link As. For a couple of months now I’ve used Box to host external MP3s. Well I’m closing it next week because now that I have actual employment and have to pay bills as opposed to just amassing them I have no interest in using income that could be better applied to happy hour drinks in this manner. So let’s go out with a bang! Here’s a handful of songs I simply could not live without (they’ll only be up for a few days though…). Enjoy! Stars — My Favorite Book [...]

Photography by Tsuru Another mixtape already? Fuck yeah! Three songs that I'm just stuck-stuck on, pushed me, near-begged me, to get another going. This all happened yesterday as I kept tinkering with my ipod to hear the 3 songs over and over. Said "fuck it", built a playlist, started adding more songs, before you know it, I had a full CD worth of amazing tracks, pull a recent photo of mine that seemed to capture it all, a little flow tinkering in the playlist, and BLAM-O! [...]

It's been a while since I've done the new music thing, so let's jump right into it... Okkervil River , my #10 favorite band on my continuing countdown , will be releasing a new album The Stand-Ins in September (9/9/08). They are referring to it as the second half of a double album that began with 2007's spectacular The Stage Names . While The Stand-Ins is not quite as immediately accessible as its predecessor (which exploded out of [...]

The best of Mobtown Mix was such a success I decided to leave it up for July...so without further ado, here is the 31st installment of Mobtown Mix. 13 tracks we've been into the past month or two. Also, note that you can stream the entire mix and get info on each artists on our radio player to the right there --> Enjoy. Download the entire mix (.ZIP) Tracklist and individual MP3 downloads after the jump... [...]
