Broken Social Scene is one of those bands that will be just as well-known for what they produced together as what they did apart. The group helped spawn the successful solo careers of Feist, Stars' Torquil Campbell and Metric frontwoman Emily Haines before they announced their indefinite hiatus in late 2011. Today though, the band has reunited to release a single off their compilation of rarities, titled Arts & Crafts: 2003-2013 and in doing so, have reminded us how mesmerizing they can be together. "Deathcock" is the first song the band recorded and they've revamped [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Video , R.I.P. Frank Micelotta, Getty It was 19 years ago today that Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home from an apparent self-inflicted shotgun blast to the head (or was it murder ?). Modern rock radio is full of tributes to Cobain today. As is social media. One such tribute came from [...]
There have been plenty of movies about teachers that are incredible, inspiring individuals. Teachers making the world a better place - one student at a time - through their caring and creative teaching methods. Half Nelson is not one of these movies. Half Nelson is the story of Dan, an inner-city middle school history played by Ryan Gosling (yes, the dude from The Notebook ). On the outside, Dan seems like he's completely got it together. He's young, well liked, successful in his classroom, and the coach of his school's girls basketball team. [...]

![[ALBUM REVIEW] Cloud Cult – Love](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4851628_lg.jpg)
In 2010, it was believed Feel Good Ghosts would be the last album we'd ever hear from the Cloud Cult . I'm not sure how much truth their was to that rumor, but with the band's ninth studio album, we are reminded once again how sad that reality would have been. Love , as with any Cloud Cult album, is immense in emotion and full of extravagant arrangements - a product of Craig Minowa and his fellow seven band members. The Duluth-based group is among an elite group of bands with eight or [...]

Just 24 hours ago, I stumbled down Pentonville Road in dwindling sunshine; today, the streets about Kings Cross are spattered with a grim drizzle. Though irrespective of the downturn in the weather, the self-professed, suited and booted DruMachine hammers away, sticks flying in the sheeting mist. It's therefore testament to the brute force of the irrefutably inimitable John McEntire that, even though this most adept of percussionists does exactly what it says if not on the tin, then on his drenched kick drum he is only the second best of the two seen rhythmically expressing themselves on the night. [...]

No producer has been talked about more in recent months than Canada's Ryan Hemsworth . He's been dolling out mix after mix, with a sparse few singles here and there since late December, which culminates with this utterly un-ignorable mix for FADER . Featured in the 47-minute collection are a few new cuts, including a sweet little Broken Social Scene remix Ryan completed during his high school days. Also included is a brand new solo track with the greatest title in modern music history; " (。◕‿◕。)." The latter comes in around the [...]
Dusky new 47-minute Ryan Hemsworth mix for FADER , highlighting all the incredible breadth of his influence: from the usual suspects like Shlohmo , Juj and Nosaj Thing to Boyz II Men and a pitch-shifted Jojo . Be sure to keep an ear out for a few hints about his impending debut LP, as well as an endearingly minimal revision of Broken Social Scene 's classic " Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl " around the 16 minute mark — a piece that dates all the way back to Hemsworth's high school years. AroarA is the new band from Andrew Whiteman (formerly of Broken Social Scene ) and Ariel Engle. The duo are preparing to release their debut EP, In the Pines , on March 12th. The record is based on the writings of avant-garde poet Alice Notley . At first blush it seems a little too conceptual for my tastes, but I'm willing to give it a shot anyway. Have a listen to the track "#2" here:

Of course, Say Anything has "In Your Eyes", Goodfellas has "Layla", Apocalypse Now has "The End", Fight Club has "Where Is Your Mind", but a cover song in a movie is just different. A cover song in a movie elevates the drama - ascribing all kinds of meaning and sentiment to the music being played. All of a sudden this song that we're pretty sure we've heard before is chewing the scenery and the actors fade into the background. When the director has two characters listen to Sonic Youth cover The Carpenters, or opens his film with a dusty acoustic [...]
