Last night I had the pleasure of taking in Broken Social Scene and TV on the Radio at the Williamburg Waterfront. Here are some thoughts on the show.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 Though the members of Broken Social Scene resist the term "super-group," they're the closest thing contemporary indie-rock has to a Traveling Wilburys-type meeting of the minds. Founded and driven by Kevin Drew, Broken Social Scene has at various times included Feist, Amy Millan (of Stars), and Emily Haines and James Shaw (of Metric)—part of an ever shrinking and expanding line-up. The band has had incarnations both as an intimate quartet and as a stage-filling 19-member troupe. Broken Social Scene's latest album, 20102s Forgiveness Rock Record , continues the tradition built by previous [...]
Bumbershoot 2011 Day Two (September 4th, 2011 - Seattle, Washington) **Atari Teenage Riot Maybe it was a mistake to kick-off the second, glorious, sunny day of Bumbershoot (a fun, colloquial way of saying umbrella), Seattle's annual international music and arts festival, by arriving at 6pm after seven hours on an airplane, and walking straight into the dark pit of the Exhibition Hall music stage. Watching Anti-Flag rage incoherently about social injustice to a group of half-interested, disaffected, fans who couldn't be convinced to mosh or crowd surf despite the [...]

At the start of Beetlejuice , Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis's characters both express gratitude for the fact they are on vacation. Only seconds later do they tackle the topic that they are spending their vacation in the confines of their own home. This hardly seems like a vacation. Part of the reason we as a society go on vacation, and go to festivals for that matter, is the illusion that we are escaping reality. Festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella, Sasquatch, and even stuff like Moe Down and Outside Lands do a great job of making you forget where you [...]

photos by Nathanael Turner Descendents Punk rock long ago transcended class, age, gender and ethnicity to become a signifier not necessarily of outward rebellion but of the symbolic, crazy-on-the-inside variety. That sense of internal defiance continues to permeate the entire underground and has become a secret handshake that united not only the artists who made traditional-ish punk rock over the course of 10 hours of the FYF -- the Descendents, No Age, Off! among them -- but from a wildly [...]
FYF Fest, which has had issues with security and crowds in previous years, seems to have moved past those problems and evolved into a healthier, happier festival. Standout sets included Girls, who played heavily from their upcoming Father, Son, Holy Ghost , buzzbuilders Purity Ring and steady, show-those-tikes-how-it's-done vets like Guided By Voices and the Descendents. Jasper Bernbaum took his camera to downtown LA's State Historic Park on Saturday to document for you.

This year's FYF Fest was a complete turnaround from 2010's logistical nightmare and overall chaos, I mean just look at the smile on that bro's face in the pic above. 2011 felt more like an outdoor All Tomorrow's Parties experience and less like a trip to the DMV. Fewer lines, zero hassles and the unbeatable lineup made it something I'll be looking forward to more than any other local event in the years to come. I shot live pics for the first time (in a festival setting) since Coachella in 2008, which was a [...]
School's in full swing & FYF Fest is behind us which means it's time for a report card. Which bands earned A's or F's and how did FYF Fest perform overall?
A Modest Mouse cover "for our generation" from Broken Social Scene's FYF Fest 2011 set on Saturday. My review and photos are here .

It's officially the end of summer, but I'm not one to complain. With the coming of fall we are given Fashion's Night Out and some pretty amazing free shows. Put on your dancing shoes and head to one of the many great shows gracing our fine city of New York this week. A festival and other festivities: ► Hard to believe there's a better bargain than this year's FYF Fest (especially if you bought your tickets at the screamin'-cheap presale rate). If the involvement this year of über-promoter Goldenvoice eliminates or even alleviates the embarrassing logistical problems of the past two years, FYF 2011 could be a landmark day. It's highlighted by Guided by Voices , Explosions in the Sky , Descendents , Broken Social Scene , Death From Above 1979 and Cold War Kids , any one of [...]

Broken Social Scene at Coachella 2011 / photo by David Greenwald Assuming Goldenvoice works its logistical magic, Saturday's FYF Fest could be the best non-SXSW music festival of the year. Below you'll find my planned itinerary; if you skip Olivia Tremor Control or Guided by Voices, it's time to consider your life choices. Look at this fucking lineup: 12:30 p.m. Twin Sister - Raphael's Stage 1:25 p.m. Avi Buffalo - Raphael's Stage (toss-up: 1:35 p.m. Mr. Heavenly - Leonardo's Stage) 2:50 [...]
