After a brief hiatus, I've returned to cover a few records that came out at the end of last year and also to celebrate something very special. And it is because this occasion is so special that I've prepared a speech: Our first year online [pause for applause] Thank you for reading last year, now and in the future. You are the stars [pause for applause] Yes, one year is a long time, but my love for you all will never die [pause for applause] Thank [...]

Another year, another year end list. Crazy that this is the third I've compiled. Has it been three years already? Crazy! Anyway here is my list of the top 30 albums of the year. Granted, I am just one man and I may have not had a chance to listen to every album ever made this year. I am speaking from my bubble of experience so if your fave isn't on here, it doesn't mean it sucks, it just means maybe I haven't heard it. Or that I didn't like it. Ha! Well get to those mp3's and enjoy! Never [...]

NYC's Cassettes Won't Listen is the type of jack of all trades that makes modern music great. Last month Broken Spindles aka Joel Petersen released his fourth album Kiss/Kick via the Faint's blank.wav label. I'd been fairly familiar with Broken Spindles through his remix work of Of Montreal, AFI, and Persephone's Bees, but the Broken Spindles on this album comes across as a whole different animal - for the better. Petersen simplifies the beats and atmospheres drummed up in each song and lets his fragile lyrics and lonely voice hold the album together. And it works. The sound still has some rhythmic bumps and scratches that stylize his remixes so well, [...]
Broken Spindles' sole member Joel Petersen sloughs off the Robert Smith membrane he acquired as bassist for hipster dance-rock staple the Faint on his recently released third album, Kiss/Kick. On the remixed "Beatdown Breakup (Cassettes Won't Listen)," laptop-pop auteur Jason Drake (a.k.a. Cassettes Won't Listen) backslashes the Broken Spindles tune all the way to minimalist [...]
Another edition of Portland Social Scene, something I'll try to be putting up on Thursday or Friday, sometime after I get the Lifeisaparty list. Man, coding all the links was a bit task intensive, so this week, I'll leave it up to you, the good readers of Taking Tiger Mountain to google it yourself...or just know where it is. As for me, I'll be doing the uncool thing and watching the free screening of Battlestar Galactica at the Baghdad . Nerdy and free. Remember, his list is a truncated version of [...]

Introvert from Broken Spindles on Vimeo . Joel Peterson, the driving force behind the low frequencies for The Faint has a new album out under his solo moniker Broken Spindles entitled "Kiss/Kick". This time around Petersen wraps a somewhat pop structure around his morbid sonic experiments. Sample a smattering of savory songs below. Sorry for the late posting of this week's Graboid, folks. The king of fighting games returned this week as Street Fighter IV was released on consoles, along with pretty much taking up any kind of free time i've had over the past couple of days. Hopefully, all of you can cut me some slack with the lack of posts this week for the time being. Sitting down earlier tonight to compile the goods from this week of album releases seemed rather daunting, as there are a staggering amount of quality [...]
