The B-side track "Mother" is out from Broken Water's first 7" Whet . It's a stony, shoegaze gem. The heavy sliding guitar style of My Bloody Valentine (the quintessential genre name drop) is very prevalent in the song, with melty vocals that seem to dissolve into the misty reverberating atmosphere. I don't think this band has released anything I'm not excited about. Listen to it below, and get excited about it!

Our favorite Olympia-based trio Broken Water recently released a new batch of songs, in the form of the Peripheral Star EP on Perennial Records (Vinyl) and Radio is Down (CD). As we told you last year upon discovering the Whet album, Broken Water consists of Kanako Wynkoop and Jon Hanna of Sisters , along with Abigail Ingram of the band Congratulations . In no particular order. Well, somewhat particular at least. Fever Ray made things easy in 2009 , this year was more of a struggle. There was a lot of good records, but none that I really felt were leaps and bounds ahead of the others. Still, there were some that stood out. Joanna Newsom, for one, with her triple (!) LP (and without a track to spare) or Caribou's Arthur Russell influenced LP. Two excellent minimal synth compilations were also on heavy rotation this year... And the list goes on.
