Anyway, yes, day eleven means I couldn't resist the obvious option of turning the volume up a bit. Here are a selection of some mighty fine bands making lovely loud noises. Also, see, I do like music made post 1998. A Fight You Can't Win - Shout First/Loud Words Black International - [...]

As this evening brings us yet another excellent Ides of Toad lineup at Henry's (it's starting pretty much now - run, you might make it!) I thought I should probably write out another one of those lists of upcoming stuff, just so it lodges in the back of your mind now, and then you can all flood down in your droves on the night, filling the bands with joy and making me an unspeakably rich man in the process. Well, it'd be nice if at least a few of you came anyway. This is where I feel I [...]

French Wives Exciting times lay ahead for Glasgow folk-pop outfit, French Wives, in just a matter of weeks time the five piece will be heading stateside to represent Scotland at this years SXSW, after which they'll be venturing north for Canadian Music Week. As if that wasn't exciting enough the band also have the release of their forthcoming debut album, ‘Dream of the Inbetween’ to look forward to. If their new single, Younger, is anything to go by then we should be in for a bit of a treat. The song is the second single to be taken [...]

If you're already getting sick of all of this talk about albums of the year, then you might want to stay well away from this site for the next two weeks. Continuing on from last week, here's the second out of four scheduled Artists Albums of the Year. This is the bit where I get folk who've done interviews for me over the past two years to tell me a bit about what's been tickling their fancy in 2012, we even have one of our artists choosing an album by someone else who's writing about their favourite album - I [...]

DZ Deathrays, by Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie October 21, 2011 For those about to mosh … This pair tore things up tonight – a more mobile frontman I’ve yet to witness in Sneaky’s and getting an un-blurred pic of the drummer was no mean feat yet the audience barely scraped into double figures. Given the accolades garnered in this country following DZ Deathrays' previous UK jaunt you’d expect them to be better known so maybe it was a lack of promotion or airplay or whatever. [...]
Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: zip file (right-click, save as) The Toad Session I was probably most nervous about recording was Milk Maid , I think. It was arranged at the last minute, they are a full, four-piece rock band, their profile is riding relatively high at the moment and I'd never really recorded anything so loud in our house before. As it was, it turned out pretty fucking well, if you ask me, so when [...]

Until just recently I had decided that I was now too old to go to music festivals, the thought of waking up in a tent just really didn't appeal to me anymore. In short I was starting to think along the same lines as this grumpy old sod . However, when Randolph's Leap offered me one of their 'plus ones' for this years Wickerman Festival, I found myself changing my mind somewhat. I used to be the kind of person who looked to see who the headliners would be, this time round though I found myself looking at the [...]

Well after an extremely successful Ides of Toad on Saturday (a massive thanks to the excellent bands, and to the fucking loads of people who came along) I think this week I shall be putting my feet up and letting other people do the work for a bit. And what a fuck of a lot of work they've been doing, too, because this week is a bit mental in terms of excellent gigs at which to drink yourself into an early grave. So much for the pre-Festival wind-down I discussed last week. As well as having [...]

When I first asked Bronto Skylift to do a wee a SXSW tour diary for me, I really had no idea what they'd come back. All I could knew for sure was that it certainly wouldn't be something run of the mill. Let's just say they didn't disappoint, here's Day One of Bronto's assault on America... Vic is off on his jollies this week but I'm sure that he would approve of "unsigned noise-mongers" Bronto Skylift as the international Scottish gig of the week this week. Vic will be be back next Monday and in the meantime you can follow his adventures in Maui here. Bronto Skylift will play Billy O's [...]
This video was made on Friday afternoon here in Austin just before the Scottish day party at Latitude 30. Featuring Admiral Fallow, Kid Canaveral, Rachel Sermanni and Bronto Skylift this is really something quite special. Detour Scotland at SXSW 2011 // The Big Walk Quite proud of this. One camera. After a massively successful SXSW in Austin Texas, where they impressed huge amounts of people at the 'Showcasing Scotland -- Night' in Maggie Mae's as well as at various other shows, Admiral Fallow continue their US jaunt by hitting the East Coast. If you're in the area, I'd recommend you get along to see them, [...]

With an incredible lineup of The Twilight Sad, Admiral Fallow, Twin Atlantic, Errors, Kid Canaveral and Withered Hand, a packed out Maggie Mae's at the heart of Sixth Street in Austin saw an unforgettable night of Scottish music. [...]
The Detour Scotland crew, including Ally McCrae and David Weaver, have been here in Austin all week filming the Scottish bands, getting ridiculous tattoos and generally having their minds blown by the insanity that is South by Southwest. These are their video diaries: Later today the Scottish afternoon showcase will take place at the British [...]
