Ahhh, Fourth of July. An excuse for sparklers, barbecues, and perfecting that old American accent. Independence Day is also the only time it's somewhat acceptable to wear a red-and-blue-striped ensemble. But more importantly, it is the perfect weekend to blast all those timeless American tunes. Whether you're looking to really show off your pride by playing "The National Anthem" on repeat, or Mom and Dad take over the iPod and start reminiscing about songs of the past, music is essential to make this upcoming weekend a hell of a celebration. So for this week's Fresh Meat [...]

The music of my choice this evening is something quiet and somber. I am currently working on finding my peace. Finding that calm even when I am late to class and stuck in traffic. It is daily tests such as these that in the grand scheme mean absolutely nothing, yet these are the same types of situations where I lose my cool the most. This is something I am currently working on. It is a daily struggle and I will fail again before I succeed, but I can't let that discourage me because I know deep down once I make [...]

Hey all! My good friend Timbre and I set out today for the next few weeks - hitting the road to play some really fun shows with Rocky Votolato. We're gonna try a combo of piano, harp, and vocals - with the addition of our friend Ben coming out to play guitar and lap steel later on in the tour...hope it sounds enjoyable We start tonight (Thursday) in Minneapolis and make our way all over the east coast hitting Toronto in the middle and ending in Chicago. It'll be good to see old [...]

Go Easy Little Doves is the sophomore album from Nashville singer-songwriter Brooke Waggoner. Brooke self-produced the album, which features twelve songs she wrote over the span of a decade. The lengthy creative time certainly paid off, resulting in an unusually beautiful artistic work. The album opens with two instrumentals - "Query" and "Ruminate" - before melting into the title track. "Go Easy Little Doves, I'll Be Fine" gracefully glides through gentle verses and a haunting string-accented chorus with echoing vocals. The song falls somewhere between [...]

I'll post some links below, but for the full article and free songs , check out the full thing HERE.

It's obvious from just a perfunctory listen to her ornately orchestrated, sumptuously produced and sophisticated songs that Nashville-based Brooke Waggoner is definitely coloring outside of the lines of what normally passes for piano-based singer/songwriter fare these days. Cinematic in scope, sweepingly theatrical in style, dramatic in presentation, Waggoner's precocious, witty songs recall Aaron Copeland and Stephen Sondheim as much as any contemporary ivory tickler. We're not that surprised to learn that she's had 17 years of formal classical piano training (and she's all of 24 years old) -- this is richly detailed, complex music. She is, perhaps, Nellie [...]

I heard of this band via an article in the May/June 2009 HM Magazine. Declaration Of Independents: Brooke Waggoner shares some her "deserving peers". Canon Blue was one of them. They describe themselves as Folk / Experimental / Ambient and I would say that is a good description. They have a free EP to download at their myspace.

So I survived my first year at SXSW. I learned that it is possible to live off a diet of alcohol and Zone energy bars. I learned that it is almost ridiculous to make a schedule for SXSW and the best things happen when you are being spontaneous. I learned if you act important enough, you can get into almost anything-backstages included. I learned it is possible to get sunburn in Texas even if you had spent most of your time inside venues. I learned that it is a good idea to carry a power strip, water and batteries in [...]
Brooke Waggoner brings a dash of tin-pan alley and the Great White Way to her enchanting songs, tossing in precocious musical tangents and infectious, spiralling twists and turns to tracks that sound like they'd be at home on the musical stage. After a well-received EP, the Nashville singer and songwriter stepped up with a winning 2008 digital debut full-length Heal For The Honey , an album she terms a breakup album that turned into one of "healing and renewal". The title track is a lingering gem of a gently restrained ballad, spirituality, honest confessions and longing all quietly [...]

I apologize for how long its taken to get to this last installment for SXSW , but I hope you've found solace in all the other posts we've been able to put out lately! Busy times for us here at Knox Road, that's for sure. Anyway, as promised, here are the final highlights and mp3s of the U-Z SXSW artists to prepare you for the upcoming Austin event. Anything you want to point out that I missed, leave a comment and let me know! So, um...see you next year (if you only came here for [...]
